Stonyford. How can I get trail maps and camping information? I've been there before but that was back in early high school. I dont remember it for shite.

Since much of my family lives in East Bay and Santa Rosa, we're thinking of camping/riding Stonyford. Any suggestions for a large group camp, especially nearby some water would be great. Thanks doods.

I was just there this weekend. Awsome spot to ride bikes, kinda sketch w/ the ATV's since the trails can get tight.

For camping try Fouts Springs/ Davis Flat area. There are two creeks there, however last years fire pretty much took out all of the trees/ shade-- so be prepared for dry hot dusty conditions. There is a large group campground, but you need reservations.
You can go up the road a few miles and camp up in the pine trees for some shade and cooler temps. There is also a lake up higher too, but you cant access the trail system from there.

For maps call the Mendacino National Forest and just ask. Or stop at the ranger station on your way in.
Also make sure the bikes are registered, and have spark arrestors--the rangers will ticket (got a good lecture this weekend).

Was your lecture from Ranger Matt? He loves his job and is very thorough(sp?) :D

Kewl. Yeah, I remember it being a blast and tight. Kinda technical riding, which I like.

so is there any water in the crick? :-) or is it worthless dribble.

I'll get ahold of Mendo... thanks.

Right now the creeks are flowing good enough to take a good cool down bath in. Just bring some tents/ tarps/ canopys...they cut down all the burned trees...so imagine yourself cooking in the dirt.

The trails are very tight, and some can get pretty nasty. Always good wrecks going on.

Ranger Matt gave us the lecture...he's cool and gave us some good info regarding all the new laws. The older more serious guy though is a major pain in the ass, and will ticket you in a heartbeat.

Yeah I've spoken with both of them. Ranger Matt is not afraid to use that ticket book either, can't say I didn't ask fot it though. They both take their job pretty seriously(sp?). I tend to think a little too serious, but I'm probably a little too easy-going. By the way my name is Matt also, but that didn't score too many points.:p

Try that. It has a pretty good trail map of the area.

the game warden thats there quite a bit is a jackass..... he gave me a ticket for the stupidest thing even after I flagged him down to talk to him about it.... (before the bridge at Fouts I went up the embankment to where our camp was on a trail, at the top of the embankment there was a fence so I turned around and went back down... I even put the rocks back on the trail and blocked it better than it was...) I asked him if he was gay, because he sure seemed to be enjoying fucking me! Then when I said I sure hope some poachers dont happen to cap you and have a dirt biker ride by and not help ya.... that would "break my heart"

But ranger "Matt".... does he have a Fro and does he ride?.. hes cool

... at Penny Pines there is another cool ranger that rides and hes young too
So there is hope that some day the rangers won't be all pissed off eco-wackos who were picked on in high school... or clueless X-MP's with small dick syndrome:nuke:
