Were you the ones with a 2nd gen runner that took off all his doors that broke a t-case output shaft and lost his inner bead? Then there was a red pickup that had his right front wheel and hub off fixin something. I went part way up sledge fri night and sat night at midnight.

Ed A. Stevens 04-15-2002, 04:03 PM Looking for something good to do on Earth Day?
A few folks are getting together for some work ... and the Hammers are just down the hill (along with John Bull, Holcomb Creek, and few other less taxing trails over the next ridge).
Happy Trails!

CA4WDC South District
Earth Day Project
White Mountain Trail (3n17)
April 20, 2002
Our goal this year is the reopening of the White Mountain Trail to motorized vehicles. After the Willow Fire burned through
this area two and a half years ago, many old fire lines were exposed. These fire lines, along with unauthorized routes, need to be
rehabilitated or restored before the area can be reopened to motorized traffic. Working with the Forest Service this project will
help assure that the public will be able to identify and stay on the legal roads and trails after the area is reopened.
The work required will involve the moving of branches, pine needles, moving logs over skid trails in an effort to close them off
so that they can be restored. We will also be repairing directional signs, fence lines, clearing out debris from all drains
associated with the trail and the affected road system.
We need at least 200 volunteers to get this project done in one day, but will have enough work for everyone that shows up. We
have 49 clubs in the south district if each club sends only two members we have our 200 volunteers. What I would like to see
happen is all clubs making this a club event.
This project will take place on April 20, 2002. We will meet at 9am across from the Fire Station in Fawnskin on the corner of
North Shore Dr. (Hiway 38) and Rim Of The World Dr. Fawnskin is located near the town of Big Bear. Be sure to bring boots,
gloves, hat, lunch, sunscreen, and plenty of water. You will also need to bring shovels and rakes.
So if you like hard work, and would like to see this area reopened come out and help with this project. Don’t miss out on all
the fun (work ).
For more information contact Dave Henry at:
dgh4@earthlink.net
or Call (909) 880-9030
Here is a chance to work on getting a trail reopened. Don't miss out on the work/fun. Call or e-mail for meeting place and time.
See you there!
YellowSub1962 04-15-2002, 04:29 PM Ed, who's "promoting" this? This is the first I've heard of it and would have probably gotten a bunch of axlesnappers to go had we known....is there another weekend planned also?
:usa:
Triaged 04-15-2002, 05:10 PM I'll be at the earth day trail cleen-up. I think all the info went out from the rangers to clubs that sponser a trail in the area?...That is where I found out about it.
SoCal Big Dawgs will be there in force!

I'll be up in Gorman this sunday, drinkin brew and wheelin a little.
Ed A. Stevens 04-16-2002, 07:26 AM The Earth Day event is sponsored by the Cal4Wheel and the SBNFA-OHV Volunteers, under the direction of the SBNF. The majority of the help is from interested Adopt-A-Trails Club members.
The Cal4Wheel web page has had it up for a few weeks, and it's been in planning for over a month. If the word is not out, make sure your rep knows this so we have better communication next time a positive OHV enthusiast opportunuty comes up.
Cal4Wheel has been looking for an event in SoCal and this opportunity to accelerate opening of the White Mountain Trail (3N17) came up. As you can surmise, the majority of advance communication has been through the FS and AAT clubs.
Dave Henry (of Cal4Wheel) should be sending out an e-mail this week to each SoCal member club for distribution. We had a pre-run two weekends ago, and Dave is organizing the Cal4Wheel and member club end of the logistics. The rumor is that Cal4Wheel may have someone filming the event for promotional purposes (I hope thay have more to film than a traffic jam).
A successful clean up will allow opening White Mountain and the north end of Redonda Ridge (a MC single track) before Memorial Day, with the blessing of the District Ranger. This area has been closed since the Willow Fire (over two years). The work benefits 4-wheelers and motorcycle/ATV enthusiasts.
The opportunity came up because the contractor who worked on the salvage timber sale failed to complete the restoration, due to distress from a death in the family (on the site). This leaves the restoration work to be done by nature (taking many years) or by volunteers (completing the work in one weekend). If we cannot get the restoration work done to the District Rangers satisfaction on Earth Day, the SBNFA-OHV Volunteers and the FS will finish the work.
Most of the work is brushing the log skidding spurs off the FS system roads, and brushing the landing pads (burnt brush and limb piles in open areas just off the roads). The intent is to make the non-trail areas less inviting to OHV's (so the true trails can remain open). The majority of the work is actually below the White Mountain Trail, in the valleys below the ridge, with some limited work on the ridge trail itself. Some work will be marking and documentation of the legal trails and undocumented bypasses for incorporation into the (very near) future OHV Plan Amendment effort (something that will need more help in the future).
At the worst, it's a day in the Forest, with a family education opportunity on how fire effects the land. Yes, families are welcome. At the best it's a opportunity to help the off-road community improve the health of the Forest and OHV trails.
Happy Trails!

Our Club missed the last district meeting, so I guess it was our fault on this one :emb:
I still should have got something on one of my e-mail lists...maybe I missed it....

Hey Ed, I don't want to sound like an ass here, but clubs usuially need more than just a few days notice to get thier people organized. :)
The "land use guy" in my Cruiser club keeps us all current with what's going on, but I don't recall seeing anything about this event.
YellowSub1962 04-16-2002, 09:55 AM Eric, I think this was a "last minute" thing, judging by how Ed says CA4WDC only had it up on their site for a few weeks ...At least I hope it was....
I don't recall seeing or hearing anthing about it on any of the other 10 or so lists I'm on...but like I said I could have missed it...scanning 75 emails at 11PM after a 13hr workday may have caused me to skip a line or 20 :D
I also didn't get anything from Jeri Ferguson, natural resources consultant for CA4WDC south dist, and I'm on her list.... I'm assuming there's a lack of communication here, or this truely was "thrown together at the last minute"....
hopefully they get enough people to get it done....and hopefully we can get more notice for future events....
