I bought a 99 discovery series I -this weekend. It has the 4.0 V8 with 64000 miles. Everything on the car is perfect except... I have noticed it has a slight oil leak. drop here drop there.
My question - is there a place where these engines are more prone to leak? Looks like it may be the oil pan gasket but since this is my first rover i'm sure most of you guys/gals could offer some advise.
And if someone could explain the 4wd system. I am a longtime jeep owner and am very familure with their system but not of the rover. thanks guys

If it stops leaking its' empty! It's normal and just part of the British charm.
What part of the 4wd system is so confusing? You have 4hi ,4 hi loc, 4 lo, 4 lo loc, There is nothing tricky about the 4wd system.

I understand 4 hi / 4 lo/ but what does locking the center diff do? if it is always in 4wd why do i have to lock the center diff, what benefit do I gain. Does it make the front and rear turn at the same ratio??

ok, just like you need a diff in the axle because the two wheels travel different distances in a turn, so does the total distance that the two front wheels travel differ from the total distance that the two rear wheels travel in a turn.
the center diff allows the variation to take place.
when you lock the center diff, it forces the front and rear driveshafts to spin at the same speed constantly, and therefore will bind on pavement.
however, no different than a selectable locker, it allows the best of both worlds for on pavement and off.
off road, with the center diff unlocked, you could lose traction to one wheel. this is because the power takes the path of least resistance blah blah blah, and if you have one front wheel off the ground, the transfer cases differential senses that and sends 100% power to the front axle, then the diff in the front axle sends 100% power to the wheel off the ground.
by locking the CD, you continue progress because (hopefully) you still have traction at both rear wheels, and 50% power goes to the rear axle.
so summing it all up, when you lock the CD you turn the Rover full time system into mechanically the same thing as the jeep PT system when it is in 4WD.
get it?
as to the oil leaks, learn to live with em. they will only get worse. just remember to top up ALL of your fluids regularly.
good luck!

Oil pan gasket. Ha
while it is possible if it is toward the back it is likely the cross seals (aka pull the tranny to get to them cross seals)
