Alrighty then, I have a 94 YJ 4.0/999/300 Full width 60/70 39.5" TSL's and beadlocks. I am getting ready to make my hydro assist steering but I am wondering which ram to get. I know that the 2x8" rams are available everywhere but I have heard people lately switching to 1.5" rams. My concern is that I have the small factory pump on my YJ and dont want to buy an AGR pump. I know about the mods that I can do. I dont want to put a ram on there that will be slow because of my PS pump not being able to keep up. Who has 1.5" rams and how much?
So, what is the concensus of the hydro ram size for my application?
And why?
mine's an assist setup, and i use a stock toyota 4cyl pump! 2x8 ram, 800 RPM's she steers like a dream, anything under it's a lil sluggish, but still not hard

Flip a coin Rockslut! I have a full hydro setup with a 2.5" X 8" ram and installed a Vickers pump that flows 4.0 gals a minute @ 1200 RPM It is a little sluggish when I get crossed up at speed and need to countersteer, but very workable when crawling and driving down the street. I think part of the sluggishness is the fact I set up the steering valve to have 4 turns lock to lock.
A buddy is using a 2" ram on an assist setup and his works about the same.
Most stock pumps will put out about 2.5 to 3.5 gpm if working correctly and that should be plenty.
I think the bigger the ram the less stress on the box.

Using the stock '79 Ford Bronco pump and a 2x8 ram. I've noticed at speed if I have to spin the wheel fast to correct a mistake, I end up fighting the ram as the pump can't get the fluid there fast enough.. At slow crawling it works fine.
