: 38's or 37's
bigdude 04-15-2002, 05:17 PM HP60 front and shaved 14 bolt rear ('94 YJ SOA w/ 44044's F&R) Mostly East Coast rocks and my personal FL (read as "bone dry") rock garden
I'm torn between 38x12.50 TSLs, 38x12.5 SX's, or 37x12.50 MT/Rs
Help me decide by tomorrow so I can order them up:beer:

The only choice for the East Coast.
If you will ever wheel at Tellico, You want The Swampers.
I love my MTR's, But for tellico, I would rather have swampers.
offroadr35 04-15-2002, 05:36 PM if it sees mud and/or will never be on the street definitely get the swampers. If you street it at all i'd get the goodyears.

BillaVista 04-15-2002, 05:41 PM 3 simple rules will lead you to tire Nirvanna:
1) If it doesn't say "Super Swamper" on the sidewall, it's an all terrain
2) You simply cannot compare a radial tire with a Bias tire, and radial tires are built for the road
3) TSL if you ever see much mud, TSL SX if mostly dry / rock, Bogger if ya got the stones !
Simple eh?
bigdude 04-15-2002, 05:57 PM To clarify-
No street.
Secondly-
The last time I was at Tellico it was me with 36" SXs and my buddy with 37" MTRs, his tires just plain stuck better. That's why I'm torn. Also the SX's are a little bit more $$$ than the TSLs.
Keep it coming please, I'm now leaning toards 38's:D
Bigdude, You are correct, I believe my MTR's do have better traction than Swampers as far as 'STICKING' You have to go low on the air. I run 35 mtr's on 8" non beadlocked and run them at 8psi all day.
The mtr's dont weigh anywhere near as much as the swampers.
But your axles can take either one. I like low weight on the ends of my small axles. :D
Heavy Metal Toy 04-15-2002, 06:08 PM 38x12.5 TSL/SX gets my vote. best all around wheelin tire, IMO.:usa:
pmurf1 04-15-2002, 06:37 PM I have the 38/12.5 SX's and now wish I went with at least the 38.5/14.5's. Bigger when aired down and a little wider. There shouldn't be much more stress or breakage with them with that setup you're gonna run. We're runnin' them on Toyota axles. Mine ride crappy on the street, but Zags 38.5's are smooth as hell. He road force balanced them though with over a pound of weight.
High5 04-15-2002, 06:38 PM my pic..... 38 sx's.
what pressure did you run your 36's sx's at? sx's are a stiff tire so you have to run lower pressures in them than alot of other tires. i run my 38.5 sx's at 4-6 psi depending on where i am running. you being from the east i would not get the mtr's. there is no doubt that they are a good tire especially on dry rocks but from what i have seen and heard they are not that great if you throw alittle mud on them.
bigdude 04-15-2002, 07:19 PM I used to run my 36's at 6 lbs.
Now with beadlocks on the way I'm not worried about tire pressure. Plus I have OBA if I really needed it:D
I like the TSL's because they are a little taller and a little cheaper. (I went balls out when buying everything else so now I'm doing price checks hard core)
Also with a TSL you ait it down all the way and it's flat on the rim. With an SX you drop it to 0 psi and it still stands up ~ 3 inches. My ride is light up top (in the drivetrain dept.) so I don't know if there is enough weight to squash those stiff sidewalls. Maybe that is why I felt that previously they didn't work too well.
Who knows. Anyway pleas keep it coming. I want to order tomorrow:D
rkcrawl 04-15-2002, 07:26 PM Go with the 38 SX's... the sidewall tread biters count for a lot... I love my TSLs... but when the 36s are gone (well maybe before, but not until I after I leave this god forsaken state of FL) I'll probably goto 38 SX's
Funny you talk about the TSLs going flat on the rim... I can't tell you how many times I walked out to the garage and had a tire with 0 psi, and the tire was standing straight up... This was on 33 TSLs though.
The other thing you can do is groove the center lug... that ought to help make them more "sticky"....
groove a set of swampers and you will stick with the best of them.
i ran wrecking ball in the rain right behind troy fabber in his sniper with mtr's and i was sticking all the same lines with my grooved sx's.
for those of you who do not know wrecking ball is a desert mountain drainage and all of the rocks are polished smooth. when wet you can barley stand up without falling on your ass.
only reason to run the mtr is if it is a daily driver or you compete in ARCA and you get them for free.
TNToy 04-15-2002, 09:02 PM 1. Camos right... Swampers are just plain better.
2. I ran 33" MT/Rs before my current 36" TSLs. Both are on my daily driver. Groove the swampers. It helps. A lot. Here's how I did mine: http://home.off-road.com/~mithrandir/grooving/groove02.jpg
3. Swampers flex fine. Just air down to 5-7 PSI. Again, the grooving helps flex those huge tread blocks.
3. Here's a Swamper at 2 Psi, Un-cut, on a ~4000 lb. Toyota 4Runner: http://home.off-road.com/~mithrandir/swampers/swamper16.jpg
4. I ran the MT/Rs for at least 8 months, lots of mud on our trails here - probably a lot like yours down there. I can't say enough about the increase in capability I got from the Swampers. MT/Rs can't climb out of a mudy rut to save their life.
Only a couple reasons to run MT/Rs:
1. You run RCAA (They're friggin' cheap)
2. You do a lot of highway driving (around town is fine on swampers. I kinda like it.)
3. You feel guilty making everyone you pass roll up their windows to get away from the tread roar. :D :D :D
Basically, if you're willing to give up trail performance for a good road ride, get the MT/Rs. If you're unwilling to compromise on trail performance and don't hit interstate speeds much, get the TSLs.
rockhog 04-15-2002, 09:11 PM If you are off the street , I would stronly consider the 37x13x15
Boggers. Groove and sipe these babies and they will stick and
sling with anything on the market. When I did this to my 39.5's
it made a world of difference. I think this would be your perfect
tire!
CHOKEu 04-15-2002, 10:16 PM Or say Fawk it and run the swampers even though it may be a daily driver... I do 40 miles a day on my TSL's. Swampers unfriendly road manners? Just the nature of the beast, if you can deal with that; run them!
the frog 04-16-2002, 01:15 AM it's almost morning Bigdude,
what's it gonna be?!
we can't stand that tension anymore...:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
bigdude 04-16-2002, 04:53 AM NO MT/Rs
38x12.5 for sure
Still trying to figure TSL or SX.
Don't know if i can justify the extra $160 for the SX's
I've still got a little time though.:D
TSL are lighter and cheaper.
SXs have better sidewall strength and sidewall tread.
Is a regular TSL really that weak in the sidewall (I don't think so) to warrant the extra $160?
It's down to the wire, any more input between TSL and SX
bigdude 04-16-2002, 04:59 AM per Intercos site they list the TSLs as 1/2" taller and 2/32 more tread depth. The SX is a little wider.
I'm thinking 38x12.50 TSL (non-SX)
Any objections:question:
rockhog 04-16-2002, 05:16 AM BOGGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

as for the tsl vs tsl sx thing. i like my sx's. i have run both. i like the big and deep tread blocks on the tsl's but i like the side wall lugs on the sx's. while the tsl might not have quite as strong of a side wall as the sx it still has a very strong side wall that will take alot of abuse. either is a good tire. one way to look at it is with the $$ you save getting the tsls you can get a 5th for a spare. then again i personally like sx's so.........basically make up your own mind because you'll be getting a good tire either way.

I agree about the ungrooved boogers. Grooving makes a big difference-without it they tend to slide sideways off the rocks in my observation. I personally like the SX's, but you really need to get what you want. If you're like me, if you compromise and don't get what you really want because of price, it costs more in the long run. Cause if I'm not happy I will find a way to get what I really wanted in the first place.

wassup, i just mounted my new 38x12.50 tsl's they are lighter/cheaper and i just grooved them too..... no objections here....
wngrog 04-16-2002, 07:50 AM I agree with Brian, the Bogger is not the rock tire people make it out to be.
I am not talking lateral traction either...I am talking about slick, rou d edge rocks and ledges...they have a hell of a time getting up and over without something for the big lugs to grab and pull up on.
SX's and TSLs are the best I have tried and I have had MT/R's, Claws, boggers, BFGs, TSLs and SX's in the last 3 years...

hey steffey what team # are you guys this weekend?
I was just on the website but didn't see any Pittsburgh entrants:flipoff2:
39 tsl
0r
38 sx
the only two reasons not to get the sx ( better tire ) is that you want a 39 or are two cheap to pay for a sx. so what one is it?
bigdude 04-16-2002, 08:56 AM TSLs as 1/2" taller and 2/32 more tread depth. The SX is a little wider.

I was meaning the 38 TSLs list .4 inches larger in diameter than SX's.
I really do want the SX's (piece of mind comes with a tire that tough). I'm balancing my checkbook right now to see if I got the funds to swing 'em.
If not then 38x12.5 TSLs
I had 38x12.5 TSL on a Blazer...it is much smaller than 38.5 SX's.
If you really do wheel, you will put yourself in a posistion where the sidewall is getting severly abused....thats where SX's are very nice to have.
bigdude 04-16-2002, 09:13 AM 4- 38x12.5 TSLs to my door $817.88
4- 38x12.5 SXs to my door $974.24
Are these decent prices for comparison or should I be looking elsewhere
clc900 04-16-2002, 09:22 AM With a name like "BIGDUDE" and a HP60 and 14 bolt, why are you meesing with these "wimpy tires"? Go at least 39.5" TSL's or even 42's. Your pigs will thank you when you are not draggin them all over the place. :D
bigdude 04-16-2002, 09:47 AM "bigdude" has to do with the size of my arms b!tch:flipoff2:
I got the axles now but not enough motor for anything that large. All in due time though, all in due time.
BTW the 14 bolt is shaved enough to bring it within .25" of axle centerline to bottom of the HP60.
clc900 04-16-2002, 09:54 AM Just trying to help -dude. Next time I will keep my mouth shut. Wouldnt want to hurt anybody's feeling's.
bigdude 04-16-2002, 09:59 AM Didn't hurt my feelings, did you not sense the sarcasm
In my book:flipoff2: indicates a sarcastic response
badassjeepguy 04-16-2002, 11:17 AM fwewwwww, i didnt enter yet...lol was makin sure my rig would be together.... it is.... barely......... i just was finishing up a few things, took it for a spin and lost 4 low, i got the problem figured, its in the linkage, i can manually do it, or if i got time tomorrow, ill fix it.... either way im there.....
badassjeepguy 04-16-2002, 11:58 AM just entered right now via paypal.... im in! hmmmm wonder what ill break first.... :D
bigdude 04-16-2002, 12:03 PM Well I got 38x12.50 TSLs.
I got them for $700 brand new (4- 38x12.5-15) and will have them this weekend. I just couldn't pass it up (even though SXs were only $840)
I finally figured that I'd run SXs and MTRs before, so I'd give the TSLs a shot. If I don't like them at least I didn't pay too much and I'll switch up in a year to a different tire.
I'm buying a tire groover:) now since the tires were so cheap:D

So where did you buy your TSL's?

I got them from Foothills 4x4 in Greenville, SC (864) 235-1144
My friend owns it so I get good "deals". He'll still try to beat anyones price. I also picked them up so no shipping was charged.
Go2Guy 06-18-2002, 01:01 PM I know you made your choice already but i thought I'd add that i've been real happy with a set of these. I've run sx's, boggers, and even have some crawlers right now but my favorite are my fat 38.5 TSL's on 13 and 14" wide wheels. great in dry rocks, wet rocks dirt and slime. sidewalls are plenty tought and they seem to flex and bite better than my sx's did. Just some more .02.
