: SOA spring choice
Looking to clear 35s and wanna keep the COG as low as possible on my 91 YJ.
I'll be going SOA within a month and am beginning to collect pieces and parts
As far a leaf springs go, I've got some options.
I don't have my stock leaf springs. Longs since replaced with 3.5"SUA.
1. RE 1.5" springs. They have inverted eyes and are "designed for SOA set up". Way friggin expensive tho at $500. 6pack
2. JC whitney has springs for the rear of CJ7 which are 2.5" wide but aren't inverted eye. They are 7-pack tho and no lift. TOo heavy duty?
3. Heavy duty 5pack wrangler springs from JC whitney
4. Alcan?
5. National Spring custom made.
Being I don't have my stock springs I have nothing to custom make my own
Any ideas?
Lost One 04-15-2002, 07:04 PM I'm using the JC Whitney 7 leafs. The bottom leaf is an overload leaf, I took it out. They started out kind of stiff but are alright after you use them a couple of times. That said, I'm swithching to Waggy front spring to lenghten the wheel base a few inches. Do a search to answer any of the questions you might have about the waggy springs, thats where I got all my info.
Yeah, I've been favoring the CY7 springs from JC whitney
Couple of questions
1. how many seasons have you gotten out of them?
2. Is the CJ spring length the same as a YJ?
3. how was the flex
4. what's an overl;oad leaf?
Thanks to lost one or anyone else
Bgcj5 04-15-2002, 07:19 PM I did my soa on CJ7 laredo rears. They are a 6 leaf pack that are military wraped and they 1 inch taller than other cj7 springs. They are a very nice spring as they are pretty soft but they are durable and can last a long time. Here is a pic of my jeep on 35's.
Bgcj5 04-15-2002, 07:20 PM and another
Looks like plenty of clearance for 35s...maybe even 37s.
So where did you get the laredo springs?
Althogh without a high pinion rear I'm reluctanct to go too high for fear my rear DS won't survive the angle
Po' riggity 04-15-2002, 11:29 PM Cheg,
Do you have a slip yoke eliminator? You will need one if you plan on SOA. As far as springs, If you think the RE springs are expensive, don't consider the nationals or alcan's, they cost even more :) If you have a slip yoke eliminator, you will also have a CV shaft. If you think its too tall, and your driveshaft can't take it, talk to Jess at highangle driveline, and he can set you up with a high angle shaft that wont break.

High5 04-16-2002, 06:50 AM do a search on jc whitney springs. these have been covered alot. i run them front and rear on my cj and they flex great. i posted a few pic's of mine last week on a post about them so do a search and read up.
Thanks for the tip Brian. Running a search using "jc whitney" yielded more results than "SOA". Fawkin nice jeep ya got there
Pretty stoked about gettin the CJ7 HD rear springs. Can't really tell they're military wrap from the pics.
I called S&G enterprises (they make the springs that jcw sells){800-532-3774} to get more info about the springs and Charlie there said that they are NOT military wrap!
Questions not answered after doing search
1. the 45" length is 1/2" shorter than the YJ (eye to eye). Does this make the shackle slant forward and possible inverted travel? Or is 1/2" no big deal.
2. The shackles I purchase will also have to be for CJ7 right? And do they hook up to YJ frame sans problems

question 1= no big deal
question 2= your yj shackles will work. you just need cj bushings in the springs. the main eye bushing will come in the spring but the smallewr one for the shackle end does not.
my springs i ordered from jc whitney are military wrapped at both ends. the 7 leaf hd's are......or were anyway.
Shaggygto 04-17-2002, 11:09 PM I am using YJ stock rears (for a hardtop) in the rear and CJ stock rears w/add-a-leaf in the front. Flexes great. Very soft ride and no sag problems to date. This setup clears 36's for me. Granted I am running full-width axles, but that shouldn't make to big of a difference.
What about wrangler 6 leaf rears from JC Whitney?
http://www.jcwhitney.com/productnoitem.jhtml?CATID=65201&BQ=jcw2
I'm thinking about going SOA soon and was wondering if these six leaf packs with a anti-wrap bar would be the ticket? At 75 a pop, they are pretty reasonable, but maybe to soft for a SOA?
For the price the 6 leaf YJ springs should be great, and if you try them out and they aren't stiff enough for you (or start to sag) you can always add leafs from the springs you replaced. The great thing about leaf packs is that you can 'tune' them to your needs by adding/subtracting different leaves. If you really want to save $$$, start pulling spring packs from junk yards and mix and match till you're happy.
Shaggygto 04-18-2002, 11:19 AM That is pretty much what I did. I used a YJ leaf as an add-a-leaf to my front spring packs to make them sit right.
WheelingPiazza 04-18-2002, 12:33 PM One of these years I should take a picture of my leafs. Maybe when I make my second spare set.
I just used wrangler springs and combined 2 sets of packs
I took the main spring of the 4 pack cut the eye off and added it under the main spring on the 5 pack. I then took the secondary spring out of the 4 pack and added it ontop of the 5 pack making a 7 leaf pack.
I am running 36sxs and a 1 inch body and I still needed to trim some body tin.
If you plan to run 35s this set up will work fine. If you plan to run bigger plan on either running the jc whitney springs or trimming sheet metal.
O and I am running a 74 cj5, cj7s are different wheel wells. I will have pictues of the trimmed sheet metal this weekend.
