: '79 F-150 8 Lug Conversion on front axle???

Can anyone help me out on some questions I have about doing this.

My project truck sat for the last two years, and I am starting on it again.

I found a good 14 bolt for the rear, and if it hadn't been raining today would have pulled it to install in the rear.

I spent the time instead calling Boyce Equipment and some local 4x4 shops with questions about converting the front Dana 44 to 3/4 ton outers to match the 8 lug rear.

It seems in the last two years that the parts have become VERY hard to find and when available, not for sale without buying the entire axle.

I will watch the local U-Pull-It, but if you aren't johnny on the spot, someone will beat you to it. The local parts yards I called didn't have anything either.

I have been told that only '78-'79 F-250 parts will work on my '79 F-150.

Are there any other options, or does someone have the parts they would be willing to part with.

Eventually I want to put a Dana 60 in the front, but the budget won't allow that for a while.

Thanks,

Mike

PS Currently running a 460/NP205 with a WMS doubler to be ordered soon. Already have the Ford 203 in the garage.

You can also use chevy outers on your axle. If you go chevy you will also need to change the knuckle. If you go with the ford stuff. You will need to change the spindle out. Also if you go ford you will need to change your master cylinder. You don't have to but if you don't your brake pedel will drop way low till you get enough fluid into the calipers.

Isnt it true that the EB D44 has the same spindle bolt pattern as the GM D44's? So if the D44 is from a EB you can just swap spindle out and leave the knuckle alone????

I wasn't looking for Chevy parts at the wrecking yard, but there were alot more of them, so I will need to go back.

If you switch to GM parts, switching the knuckle is not big deal, as I need to replace ball joints anyway.

Are there any issues with the steering components, or will they bolt up.

THANKS for the help.

Mike

PS One more question, when you go from the knuckly out using Chevy parts, will I have to switch everything. Brakes, stub axle, spindle, etc.....
