We are bringing out a whole mess of new brackets in just a few, watch for them! And of course they will be bent, we can bend.....

I have a set of your brackets for my C&C 14FF....which as you know uses the Dually hubs. They won't work from what I can see. Are you bringing something new to the table in this regard? Can I exchange them? Thanks

We have discovered that the C&C crowd like good brakes too, we have been testing them and its just a release from the Insurance company from here.....

BTW, we will exchange or refund anything in unused condition anytime and Guarantee against just about anything less taking a cutting torch to them!

I don't think many, if any of my competitors carry any product liability insurance but my carrier was very hard to find and they require a testing period before I can release any new brake brackets, measurement of wear on pads and checking torque on bolts mailny but done by their chosen mechanic at his price:( over 6 weeks time.....PITA!

The Ford D70 Disc Brake Bracket! All of $50......way too pricey huh? Not!

These are for the D70 that came under Ford's, Yes, it matters who the different OEM manufacturer was! All of the big 3 used the D70 at one time or another and all had different mounting flanges, different offsets, & a couple of different tube diameters were used too......Don't let someone tell you different!

And its kind of ironic that every company with something better never runs out, we actually sell some of these, over 100 pair this month alone.....I just checked, 131 pair in April!

Strength, Quality, Price!

And now they will come including the 4 bolts required! We are in Northern California and never see much rust, however I took down a C&C D70 this weekend and I agree with my competitor now, I think this one must have been on the truck spreading the salt!

Cal and Southwest trucks just don't see the salt in the winter and I really had no idea of how bad your northern rigs can get.......Now I do!

Strength, Quality, Value.......and BENT!

I would think they might be priced a little high? What do you think? Strength and Quality sure, but price always rears its ugly head......Well, we found the obvious answer to strength, Quality, & Value, that answer is bending the brackets, bending costs less and therefore costs you less, make sense now?

And they are in stock too........!

Gravel Maker
05-15-2007, 07:32 PM
Without any funky spacers they fit in a USPS flat rate envelope, not a box & the envelopes cost you less!

BTW, even if you buy someone elses' brackets you can thank us for driving down rhe prices! We do not believe in pricing things at "whatever the people will pay", we believe in FAIR PRICES and all of our prroducts reflect that commitment to FAIR PRICING!

This customer was reading some stuff about bending being dangerous on stinking Ebay......he wanted to know why we bent our Brake brackets......

My response, "Because we can". Bending accurately is a lost artform with the onset of CNC machines. Sure the machine can replicate the force required to bend over and over perfectly accurately. The problem is with the operator and their skill and experience level when they go to calibrate the machine. Every batch of steel is minutely different and the operator has to recognise that difference and recalibrate between batches. If that isn't done precisely you will make alot of bad bends, we don't make alot of bad bends......

He went on to ask me why everyone else usually costs' so much more, for that I don't have an answer, maybe its greed? Maybe they never heard of Henry Ford? Perhaps they don't understand that bending is less expensive than cutting additional parts and welding:homer:. And when we make parts we usually make very large batches, you just can't make things for a fair price if you make them one at a time or add unecessary steps to the production......

To be honest, I don't know why everyone dosen't bend? If you can't do it accutately yourself you hire someone that can. After all, I got the idea from all the auto makers in the world, they all bend their brackets, and out of much weaker material too.:p

Lastly he asked how we can ship them for $5 when a Flat Rate Box is $8.40, easy I said, these stack together and fit in the Flat Rate Envelopes so they save you even more money!

We have finished all testing on them and the second batch should be here today!

The joints are in for a startover, the machinist was a little too exuberant with the press and jammed the first 4! The balls are locked from too much pressure.....:( They will do it but I am waiting on another batch so we can make them without quite as tight of tolerance.......

Dan I contacted Wilwood (http://www.wilwood.com/Products/001-Calipers/033-cpb/index.asp) ( manufactures of disk brake calipers) and currently they don't offer a combination parking brake caliper for 3/4 ton trucks. Their current models are for small passenger cars. Here is their response " We are working on a larger piston version but nothing large enough for a pickup." Wow Wilwood marketing folks must be asleep in their cubicles. Do you know of any other manufactures of combination parking brake caliper? As the caddy calipers don't provide enough clamping force for large 4x4's. I did see where somebody made a Hydraulic Handbrake Assembly. Not a true e-brake, but better than nothing. You could make one, but having the fluid reseivor in between your seats might not be the best idea, as it would get kick from time to time. A clutch master cylinder would be small enough, found new ones for 18 bucks. These hand brakes are used mostly for Rally cars to get sideways in the conners. I might look at using the stock foot pedal so I could mount the master cylinder outside. Plus they make stuff for boat trailers (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.couplemate.com.au/4019-001.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.couplemate.com.au/c297.html&h=170&w=285&sz=7&hl=en&start=171&um=1&tbnid=82J7-gYa3o5TDM:&tbnh=69&tbnw=115&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhydraulic%2BHandbrake%2B%26start%3D16 0%26ndsp%3D20%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rl s%3DGGLR,GGLR:2006-49,GGLR:en%26sa%3DN)that could be used.

A better idea is pony up for a T-case brake as it would be manual, I might just install a line lock for now.

And everyone I have seen has had some kind of vibration or stickiness problem.

Bummer on the T-case! It also has other issues, like needing a special flange which means changes to your drive train setup.

I did find a company TSM (http://www.tsmmfg.com/Rebuilt_Calipers.htm) that offer large GM calipers ( modified caddy calipers adding new lever spring and bracket) to make it easier to add a parking brake cable. Skip said the caliper is the same size as the early 4x4 calipers, and even uses the same 7/16 banjo bolt. He also said that if the parking brake is not holding it was not setup correctly. He also said you need to used the e-brake to keep it adjusted as the pads wear down. His calipers are new and a bit pricey at $320 plus shipping.
You can get custom cables at Control Cables (http://www.controlcables.com/Page.bok?file=downloads.htm) for about $50-60 Download their PDF for cable routing ideas.

FYI only the early year Caddy calipers open up to 1.25" the newer ones only
open up to 1"

EDIT: The Caddy calipers have a 2 3/32" pistion where the K20 calipers have a 2 13/16" pistion, that almost 3/4 of an inch:eek: Ok back to other designs :D

When Caddy calipers are costing $320 you can think of better options, I think 4 standard calipers @ $20-25 each with a handbrake included could be cheaper than the caddy calipers alone......so which is a better way? I'm looking into the handbrake lever now, if you find a cylinder to fit let me know, the rest is easy.....

Which hand brake are you looking at? I know the older Toyota's have cheap clutch master cylinder. I like the idea of a hand brake as your passenger can operate it if needed in a pinch. I need to spend a couple hours a pickNpull checking out some viable options. Also need to figure out the clutch Master cylinder size to make sure you have enough volume for 2 calipers. If not a Scout II MC is less than $20 bucks, but is a lot bigger

Like the one you sent the pic of, the New Zealand rally car one, it was $320 + another $50 for the small cylinder, it would be more than enough for 2 calipers, remember the size of the master cylinders in the '60's? And they ran all 4 drums which take more fluid than calipers to operate. A very small one operated from the hand brake! Right at the handbrake! More than enough for 2 calipers and way cheaper!

It is however $370 for that handbrake + shipping from New Zealand, I think with this style of hydraulic cylinder we can make the complete rear brake kit for any rear axle application with an Ebrake available for under $350 complete. Some people are paying nearly $300 just for the Caddy calipers alone and they never stay in adjustment. This way we make the bracket for 2 calipers per wheel (~$90), and we make the handbrake with the cylinder (~$150) and you add 4 calipers, a T fitting and 10' of brakeline for about $130......Most of it is easy, making the handbrake for a fair price is the hard part......BTW, I ordered 5 different cylinders yesterday to test them out.

Dan! Awesome, definitely keep us posted. I am finally getting time back to put on the rig, so your disc brake convo is going in by next week. I was waiting to get some extra parts (all new studs, mine were in horrible shape), so just got them.

And I spoke with my next door machinist and I think we may be able to sell the handle with the cylinder for under $150, this is going to be revolutionary! An Ebrake and Disc brake conversion altogether for ~$350ish.....

The bracket to tie the Handle and Cylinder together might be enough, maybe a simple lid.....And it is Aluminum and Steel, no plastic.....

I am happy to see a couple of my competitors making disk brake brackets bent like ours, it shows they are the right way to make things.

And I try and ignore the mouth breathing uneducated ones that say you will die if they are bent, just plain dumb! I think we have enough in use now to prove that theory a bunch of crap, and I think every automaker in the world bends their brackets too, I guess they are all wrong too......made up scare tactics......

Dan, made some progress this week! The brackets look awesome, I added some minor bling with hammered finish rattle can, and then painting took a life of its own, and I ended up painting everything, calipers, axle, and even the disc brake outside. Installed the calipers this AM, hoping to have everything finished up by tomorrow:D I have taken my time, since I ended up replacing all bearings, seals, swapping a u-bolt yoke, blah blah blah :)

Will post pics of the final product, hopefully in the next couple days!

Some quick pics to keep me motivated ;)

We insure our products and to get the insurance needed we have to go trhrough a pretty challenging process in both time and dollars to get them to give me their stamp of approval. The process requires that we put a specified amount of miles on an equiped vehicle with measurements of wear 4 different times during the process, a real PITA but required.

Its really just a bracket so not too big of a deal but let me see what you find, I'm not yet happy with those. I made a couple of prototype brackets to retrofit a stock application but the mounting of a Master cylinder to them is where it gets difficult. A seperate actuating cable may be the best way.

Still the best reasons to buy anything. Buy American made products. Always ask where it is made, your job depends on it!

Gravel Maker
11-09-2007, 10:07 AM
And to tell the truth I was at a loss for words.......

If you don't see the benefit of buying American Made products I'm not sure you would understand the explaination as to why that is important.

To put it in a nutshell, you or your neighbor makes something and sells it, the money spent making it is spent here (USA) and the profit is spent here too and you or your neighbor have a job from making it.

The product produced overseas may be of equal quality and price but that is rarely the case because the company that takes their manufacturing overseas is is doing it to make it for less and that also usually means they are making it as cheaply as they can which results in lower standards, lighter materials, cheaper steel, ect....

The company that makes the products in the USA is usually doing it to maintain higher standards and have better oversight on quality. Of course there are exceptions to this but it is generally true.

To be honest, I don't know of any brake brackets being made overseas but I do know of lots of other parts wheelers use that are and the quality and strength just don't measure up.

Anyway, rant over, sometimes I just need to get it out of my system.......

what modifications are needed on the axle?

Gravel Maker
11-15-2007, 12:55 PM
The 14 bolt brackets require no modifications on a '72-'87 14 bolt axle, you use the Rotors & Calipers from a '75 3/4 ton Chevy 4x4 front axle, you will have to do line mod's depending on which vehicle you decide to put it in but the parts just bolt up......

Some friends are trying to make me have a social life!

The truck you want brackets for is first gen, we are done testing the bracket for them and it is in production, it is a kind of tricky die to bend on and we have made 2 of them to see which is better. We should have them in stock and ready to sell within 2 weeks.

The axle modification you need to do for a Toyota axle is the axle flange needs to fit in the Rotor hat. Before you start upgrading the rear I would suggest upgrading the front to a newer vented series and then using the old on the rear.

And now for something completely different........

http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/Dual%20Caliper%201.jpg

NO! Not to run dual calipers on the rear axle, that would be dangerous and stupid! This is the first part of our new, inexpensive, 14 bolt disc brake conversion, Ebrake solution, and Turning Brake all in one for a tab under $400:eek::D.

The multiple holes are not for clocking, the bleeder will always be on top. The holes make it possible to run the bracket on either side and the bracket is clocked to have the top caliper pin come out just over the spring or just under the spring if you run lift blocks......

Sound good to you? Does to me!

The 14 bolt axle is only the first, we will soon offer this for every axle we currently make a bracket for and every axle we add to the list!

The axle tube Diameter is larger, the studs are smaller, and the offset is different. We are working on one for the newer axles as we speak.

A nice one though, had the bay doors open all day!

Going to a 2 phone system next week, we will have an order only line and a tech line. I will continue to answer the tech questions myself and I will have 3 different employees answering the order line. That should make it a little easier to get through to us! We have been very, very busy since way before Christmas and we are up another 30% since the first of the year so it is certainly time for it. Thanks to all of you that have made it possible!

The originals, as they were designed......

More, as designed......

Still, and from day 1, $50, BEFORE the PBB10 discount!

BTW, all of the 14 bolt brackets will clear 15" steel wheels without modification unless you have a strange wheel. The Caliper and Rotor can only go in 1 place and it dosen't matter who's brackets you use, that place can't change......

Dan,

I have read up to page 16 of this thread and searched it once and found that you are now including the 4 bolts needed per bracket. I don't have the ones from when I pulled the drum brakes, so are you including a bolts now? Good product and will be picking it up here soon as I can.

Richard

Edit:

Just got off the phone with you Dan about the info on the bolts for the 14 bolt bracket, thanks. Also just ordered a set from the website. I will post up pics when I get them installed when they are delivered

And an interesting internet observation......

We sell these on Ebay too, for $52 in our Ebay store and at auction with an opening bid of $45 and a buy it now of $55.......95% of our Ebay sales are of the buy it now for $55 instead of buying it in our Ebay store for $3 less, Whats up with that? I think Ebay is pretty much the internet with training wheels but thanks to Ebay we can keep the price lower here!

BTW, 311 pair out the door in the trailing month, thanks for the orders!

From a guy trying to calculate the cost to do the swap.

Well, nationwide the cost of calipers & rotors is about $25 each, some parts of the country report paying $9.99 each but I pay ~$25. Add a little line if your axle needs it replaced and there you go.

So around $100-$125 in parts and $50 in brackets and there you go! Way less than rebuilding drum brakes.....

Because parts is parts, when you pay more than this you are just paying more for the brackets......

We have had a couple of problems with production, got those worked out and what do you know, the master cylinder provider seems to be going out of business. I can't get through to them.....They had changed the clevis on the master since I had bought the first one and the clevis they used was made for them. I had designed the bracket around their master and with the new clevis the length was wrong, we changed the bracket and now I think I will have to again before I can release them. It is not a factory item or I could just use a different supplier......

Anyway, I can't sell something that isn't repairable so I have sold the 36 masters I had bought to a race car parts company (I think) and am waiting on one from another supplier before I can redesign the bracket. The bracket I am talking about is the Master Cylinder bracket, not the caliper bracket.....

Do you have the caliper bracket/ brakes for the e-brake upgrade for sale w/o the new master cylinder? In the original pic it looked like a special bracket for the brakes as well and I don't see that? I just got the 14b srw today would like to get it under the Jeep asap. But will need an e-brake that works eventually.

For a Ford 9" axle because they are used in so many vehicles with so many different bolt patterns but our weld on brackets are used with any rotor from 12 3/8 - 12 3/4 diameters. We are working on another to be released soon, watch for it......

Got the new lift up this afternoon and the new TIG going yesterday (300+ AMPS!)......Time to play on my own truck this weekend, not just a company truck but the one I drive all the time......Kind of cool, my main fab employee is upset because I can TIG way better than he can, but he's in his 20's and didn't spend the first 5 years of his fabbin' life with a torch! We couldn't afford a MIG in the 70's, gas was the way, at least it makes TIG easy, and I still MIG aluminum better than I MIG steel......
