: Super Birfs
fatkid 04-15-2002, 10:44 PM We manage to brake a stock a Toyota birf this weekend at the Hammers and we had the chance to meet Bobby Long. After everything that was said and done this weekend there were no reports of and broken Long Bifs. So we pick up a set, they fawking rock! If your thinking of upgrading I would by all means consider a set of Super-Birfs.:)
I went to pick n pull Saturday and got a set of stok Toyota Birdfields. Nice only $22.0 each I am going to send them in as a core.

fatkid 04-15-2002, 10:54 PM I'm telling ya, that's going to be some of the best money ever spent on your rig.:)

He does, but when I asked figmo at roadlessgear.com, he told me nobody sent in Samurai cores, so the only way he can do Zuks is if you send in yours to be done.

Cool - so that means that I can get narrow SJ-410 or narrow Samurai ones made up?

TNToy 04-16-2002, 10:05 AM Fatkid's right. I'm running a set on my Toy. It's nice not having to worry about popping on with the 36s. Changes the way you wheel quite a bit, the skinny pedal is a little more palatable.
Bobby Long can do Cruiser birfs (he's done FJ40's and 80's), and sammy birfs as well. Call him and ask.
Website is http://www.toyotasuperaxles.com
Don't order through roadlessgear.com... you'll end up paying $24 extra/joint. Go straight through Bobby. If you have a bunch of birfs layin' around, he'll probably knock some off the price if you send in more than just the 2 cores. I know he did that for a few Toy guys, and he has plenty of those. Sounds like he could use some Zuk birfs.
Also, don't cruise around a lot with the hubs locked in. The birfs are heat treated to REDUCE the hardness, so they won't be so dang brittle. Which means they'll wear out a little quicker.
Here's a pic of a stock toy birf vs. a Longfield. The rest I took are here:http://home.off-road.com/~mithrandir/longfield/

fatkid 04-16-2002, 10:58 AM I would really be interested to see how strong a Zuk birf would be after a little voodoo by Bobby Long. If it could with stand some 35's that would be the Shit! I know the zuks still have small axles but it might be worth a shot.:)
UZI 9mm 04-16-2002, 11:19 AM just out of curiousity though, i thought that if you were going to break either a birfield OR an axle, the "better" of the two to bust (as far as quick/easy re&re) would be the birfield?
if you have a "virtually" indestructable birf, doesn't that mean you're now more likely to bust an axle- which could be more difficult to get out little bits in the axle tube, potentially worse damage etc.?
if you had just "tougher" birfs that wouldn't pop by just looking at them wrong, but still let go prior to breaking an axle, isn't this better?
(BTW this is in regards to a Sammy axle/birf, not Toy)
super_suzi 04-16-2002, 11:51 AM what if you made a hybrid...KIck rear up front...

Yup Yup, I agree 110% 22 splines are smaaaaaaaaaall. The splines are the exact reason I'm swapping to toy axles, you can get long fields, you can get birf rings, but you can't beef the splines:(
somone21 04-16-2002, 01:16 PM Trail Tough has the bigger axles for 620 not worht the price:flipoff2:
nuttzack 04-16-2002, 01:32 PM toy axles and superbirf's are the shit!!! I heard that bobby can't heat treat the inner cage on the sammy birfs or something like that. Hats off to Fatty:flipoff2:

I hear that,
Hummmmmm.......
Samurai front axle+$620+shipping????= Samurai front axle:laughing:
How many people break rear Samy axles? raise your hands, same same to me.
DougO 04-17-2002, 12:05 AM Do you have a good pic where your suppose to put a tac on then file it down, the pic on Longfields site isnt too good
High5 04-17-2002, 02:48 AM i think it is a great thing for the toy axles but i wouldn't wast the $$$ for a set fo sami axles. they guys i run with break axles abd birfields. by beefing the birf's you still have the weak shafts. you could run a stock toy axle and be stronger than the sami's with the longfields. just my op........no wait i almost forgot my op is get waggy d44's and forget all the birf crap! :flipoff2:

Do you have a good pic where your suppose to put a tac on then file it down, the pic on Longfields site isnt too good It varies depending on what differential you're running. Just pack some grease into the splines on the inner shaft and slide it into the housing without a birfield on it. Push it in until the machined surface of the axle is about 1/8" from sliding through the inner seal.
Pull the shaft out and tack it where the grease is pushed out of the splines. It may be hard to see, because the inner seal will smooth out the grease, but you should be able to see it.
I think I may just put a small dot of primer on my axle shaft, and slide it in and out a couple times when I put my new 3rd into the front today. Once it dries you wouldn't have to worry about the inner seal mucking up the grease technique.
Booger Weldz 04-18-2002, 07:17 PM im running a lockright in the front and thought the cross pin would get me outta the martack. the axle still sits in just past the seating surface on the alxe for the seal and shes dribblin...
i beat the holy shiot out of the supers at the hammerz through all of big johnson and the new trail?? they take a lickin! the sami project is gonna get them in toy axles! order yours today!:smokin:
fatkid 04-18-2002, 08:35 PM I watched rokzuk brake a rear following me through Little Sluice. Anyone ever see Toy rear brake? I even saw a Bender brake 2 rear 60 shafts this last weekend on Wrecking ball...:)

i take it they were 30 spliners right?
fatkid 04-18-2002, 08:54 PM You are correct Sir...:)
High5 04-18-2002, 08:59 PM i see so many people (including on this bbs) who run out and get 60's and think they are the sheite but uless they are getting the relatively rare 35 spliners then they are wasting thier time. if you are going to go get a rear, get a rear. 35spline 60, d70, 14bolt,etc. these don't break. :D
fatkid 04-19-2002, 01:08 PM They are strong and they are full floater, however they are not the answer to you axle brakeage problem.
