: Salisbury Rear Vented Brakes

So we got the vented rotor calipers mounted last night and I started running brake lines.

I can take pics if anyone is interested. If not, no biggie.

What part #s did you use? Where did you get 'em? The Salisbury rear on my D110 has regular solid rotors. I'd be interested in upgrading to the vented rotors and 4 pot calipers if I can get a matching set to fit on my D90.

Thanks Old Scout for throwing those up.

The calipers are actually the front calipers from my '90 RR. When I did the non-ABS brake conversion I decided I wanted to use the Willwood calipers that I had. The Willwoods will NOT work with LR steel rims, and on the 145 and the Serious One (the truck they were supposed to go on originally), I wanted to have the 'factory' look, so I couldn't use the Willwoods.

Long story short, the Willwoods went on the 90RR, and the front calipers from the RR went on the rear axle of the 145. Originally the 145 had a drum brake Salisbury, so I got some early RR spindles (the longer ones, they bolted right on), with the early RR hubs (pre '87) and some factory vented rotors.

So, off the top of my head I don't have any part no's, but I can *try* to figure them out if you really need me to.

The bracket to mount the caliper to was fabricated from scratch by Cooper out of 1/2 inch plate. Drilled, tapped for a 12mm fine thread (1.25) they are the same as the front hubs and use an allen head bolt (same as front), for consistancy. The bracket was welded to the axle tube to position the caliper as high as was prudent without running any possible interference with the spring. The brake line will exit out the bottom do a 108deg. turn and come up alongside the sway bar mount.

I ordered some air-bags for inside the coil springs hoping to control rear sway, and also load leveling capability, but I might end up re-using the sway bar that came with the truck anyway. Dunno yet. Probably will put it on while I have easy access and then decide if I really need it or not later (besides, it'd be one less part to trip over if it was mounted on the truck!).

So, in a nutshell that's what's going on with the rear end.

Any more questions???

Michael

PS Thanks for your interest. I can't share these little cool things with many others!

Michael, not to get off on another subject, but I emailed you last week about Serious One. Did you ever receive the message? If not, drop me a line at jagdavis-at-msn-dot-com and I can reply. Thanks.

AAAAAhhhhh, so you *are* paying attention! Hehe.

Yeah, I'm trying to fit some longer shocks in the rear.

I'm using the stock upper shock mount, but never liked the options I had on the lower stud mount, so Im putting in a mount for an eye. The goal is to have shocks that limit downward travel because I do NOT want to get the rear end of this long-ass truck too crazy. That's the other reason for running the sway bar.

I clamped that bracket in place to get some measurements. The distance at which the spring can fall freely out of place is 23 inches. I have a Rancho shock that gives me 25 inches extended, but there is another Rancho shock that gives 22.6 inches extended so i'm going to try those.

Anyway, you are just kind of seeing me fish my way through the rear suspension options. Any suggestions are appreciated!

No need to flog with the part #s since I'll probably make do with parts I have laying around as well. Thanks to Doug M, I have a nice front D90 axle sitting here with all the associated bits intact and when I get to it, they ought to fit just fine!

I will need to upgrade the fronts of my D90 soon too, so maybe I'll have some parts left over from that adventure as well.

Btw, in my experience, limiting straps would be a good investment rather than letting the shocks limit your articulation. With straps, you have an easily replaceable item that can break and not adversely affect your vehicle. However, if you limit your articulation with the shocks, they will eventually break if they are stressed this way on a regular basis. I've seen shocks blown by slamming regularly against the ends of their travel.

You're probably right about the straps. I know on the Serious One they are working just like I wanted them to.

I figure with the rear sway bar *and* the OME HD springs (659 I think) that there won't be that much actual travel, but I want to make sure.

If/when this thing ever sees any serious articulation it'll more than likely be at slow speed, but there will be a lot of weight on those shocks if they are the only thing limiting articulation.

Like I said, you're seeing me flog through this with an open mind. Straps are something that I know work, so I'll have to see where they can be used on the 145.

Thanks!

I'm considering trying to hook up limiting straps on the rear of my D90 since I think I'm killing the CV joints in my drivelines by having too much droop. I'd do like Brandon Loveday has on his D90 and just limit the center of the axle to keep it from drooping too far but not limiting articulation. Also, I need to take a look at my front set-up because I am currently using my brake lines as limiting straps. Time for some longer lines again!

I might look into limiting total droop on the front axle too since this would help to keep the nose down on hill climbs. Of course, I like what I've seen on some of the competition rock buggies where they hooked the winch cable to the center of the front axle to give an adjustable front limiting strap that can be cinched down for hill climbs! :D

Mr Clean??? Moi???

Man oh man, you ain't seen nothing yet.

I walked into the shop this afternoon and Cooper just has this big stupid grin on his face and says he just has to show me what he's been doing to my front axle.

I don't want to give it away, but dude it's fawkin' sweet. We're waiting for a critical piece to come from England, but when it does, watch out, it's the shit!

Thanks though.

Okay...From the guy that "builds his trucks so you can shop at NAPA" to "waiting for a CRITICAL piece to come from (of all places) ENGLAND!??!!"

I've just lost all respect for you...

Go away...

OK OK, I deserved that. :flipoff2:

I guess I'll let the cat out of the bag a *little* so you can see where I'm going.

The part-time LT-230 is really only fully utilized if you have freewheeling front hubs, so we've figured out a way to have a bolt on set of hubs (it'll be sweet, I promise).

I also am running vented disks on the front of the 130, so I ordered a set of 'vented non-ABS front calipers'. Well, Craddocks got a wild hair and sent me calipers that are supposed to fit armored personnel carriers! Man, they are the shit. Big, beefy, and totally bombproof. Even Timm was impressed (and that's hard to do).

So, rather than send them back and get the ones that'll work with the vented rotors we all know and love, I'm having two pairs sent from England. Having a total of 4 will mean that I won't have to worry about where I'm getting my next rotors from when they wear out (in about 8 years or so).

Yeah yeah, they're definitely NOT from NAPA, but most if not all of the wear items on the truck will be.

I did spend almost an hour at NAPA yesterday though if that counts at all! :flipoff2:

Hows your little project coming D?

Oh yeah and Ron, you are definitely in the 1%. In fact, you probably ARE the 1%. :D

Later,

Michael

Oops, forgot to clarify...

The two pairs of rotors I'm getting sent from Craddoks are rotors from Salisbury front ends. They are super beefy, thick and I don't think anyone in the US has ever seen them. Jamie from the UK claims he can 'stick his finger in between the vents, and I don't have small fingers', (hehe, Merv feel free to interpret that one), so I'm excited to see them.

Anyway, just to clarify.....

Can I still hang out Doug???

Oh yeah, does it count Doug if I've been to NAPA 4 times in the last 3 days and just picked up my GM mastercylinder to throw in the 145????

Hehe.
