Just need to tow the thing to the exhaust shop and don't have a cable made yet.
Will it spew gear oil all over without a speedo cable or a plug in there?

Not if everything is in good shape. Should be sealed tight with no leaks without the cable.
Duct-tape over the hole just in case, never know...it can't hurt and.... it looks cool

actually what i've found works better is to keep an assortment of expander plugs in various sizes for just such occurences.
y'know, the rubber ones with a metal washer on the "inside" and a nut and bolt going through the rubber with larger diameter metal plate on the "outside"
they have even really small versions of these which use a lever/rocker arm (instead of a nut with through bolt) at Home Depot in the fastener aisle.
these have come in handy for everything from a starter motor being removed from an engine, to hacking off the ends of my tubular front bumper mounts.
now i don't have "oh hey, look, you've hacked off the ends of your bumper mounts" comments, and i can keep trail repair spare parts inside the tube, nice and safe 'n dry.

I fail to see how an expando plug would work unless he took the whole gear housing out too.
What you could do to be safe and it's better then duct tape (which is saying a lot!:D ) woud be a 3/4" rubber pipe cap and a hose clamp.
Shouldn't need anything though, if it's gonna leak it would with a cable or not.
So in other words if it does leak you'll need to replace the O-ring in the housing and possibly the driven gear eventually anyway.

I know from experience that it won't leak because of no speedo cable. Miine has been that way for almost a year now, zero leakage. Later

hmm, mine does leak a little, just a few drops noticeable when i park it. Maybe there's something wrong, i dunno. I plan on getting a speedo cable soon, though. Any body know where to get a conversion cable for a 205 to a Toyota Speed sensor...?

mine leaks without the speedo cable....2" of 5/8 heater hose, one 5/8 bolt, two hose clamps...no leaks 3 years and counting...

my speedo cable is cut about 3" from from the case, it leaks out of the cable were it was cut!

i kinda assumed this was/would be the case. on mine it takes all of what, 30 seconds to remove the speedo and driven gear case.
Shouldn't need anything though, if it's gonna leak it would with a cable or not.

exactly my point. this is WHY i put a plug in there. while i was waiting to replace a leaky o-ring.

Just a little heads up guys.
If your drive housing does leak check with a tranny shop first. Back when I had my Cutlass mine leaked like a sieve so I popped it out and took it to the local trans shop. They only charged me $5 to replace the O-ring, they "reconditioned" the driven gear shaft and the guide. They stuck this tool in it that knurled the sleeve then honed it back out. I didn't know you could do that but it never leaked again.:D
