What is the rule on insurance for a vehicle that is flat towed? Does it req liability insurance? Is it possible to get discounted insurance for an offroad rig driven 100 miles a year? Hate to pay all that money if its not needed.

I am not positive, but I think you don't need insurance for the vehicle if it is being towed and not being driven/operating under its own power. My insurance for the Sami is only about $25 a month. I drive mine a couple times a week though. For 100 miles, the insurance would cost more than the fuel

Well, this is CA,so you know theyre gonna get'cha no matter what!
If the vehicle is being towed, the insurance for the towing rig should take effect, should there be an incident. The towed car would essencially be a trailer, under complete control of the tow vehicle's driver. It does have to be currently registered since the tires are contacting the road....same goes for a vehicle on a tow dolly.
Ive tried to get discounted insurance on mine too since I dont put many road miles on it compared to my car and bikes.Every insurance agency said the same thing,"We dont/cant verify milage acrued,so theres no way to confirm how much or little you use it".....for full coverage insurance, thats probably a different story.
If the rig has a street registration/license plate, and not an offroad green sticker, then I doubt insurance would be discounted since they also dont/cant verify how much or little off-highway usage the vehicle gets.If its a sandrail, quad or other type of stricly offroad registered vehicle, then yah, maybe.

I have Allstate and carry just PL and PD for legal purposes. Even though it's trailered every where it is still registered. Allstate will not insure at all it if it is not registered. I guess it doesn't matter if I ever green sticker it since I won't be driving it on the street at that point.
Like Chevzuki said, It has to be legally registered if it contacts the street in anyway. But you don't have to have it insured unless it is being driven under it's own power.

This is a copy of an email I got from my Allstate agent yesterday for a strictly off road vehicle.
Gary,
It appears we can rate this on our Recreational Package Policy.
It is an annual policy. The annual rate for liability limits of:
300,000 per person
300,000 per accident bodily injury
100,000 per accident property damage
The rate is $76 a year.
Min. coverage would be $40 a year.
Let me know if this works for you.
All I would need is a payment to get it started.
Not sure about you guys but I've got about $8000.00 into mine so far (should be finished in a few more weeks) and I'm getting full coverage. If it gets stolen or damged in a wreck, you screwed if all you have is liability.

Cool a few weeks, huh?
Cool a few weeks, huh?
I know - I've been saying that for a month now but the axles took a little longer because the guy doing them some personal family stuff came up and it took longer and also the 6to1 T-case gears were on back order..........arghhh. I missed the annual zuki event my club held over memorial weekend but there's always next year. I'm just pumped it should be done fairly soon. We did make a few last minute changes also.
I had the rear end dovetailed. The roll cage design had to be changed up a bit for more stability. Instead of putting in mitsubishi seats as planned, I just spent some extra and went with Renegade Seats with 4 point harness. Can never be too safe. Also decided to go with 16" 2.0 Fox shocks in the rear and did away with the seperate springs and Doetschtech shocks. That cost some duggets so I had to skip the front links and going with Jeep Leafs in front with shackles. Still going to reach my 100" wheelbase though so I'm happy. I'm going out to the shop this weekend to snap some pics with my new 6 mp digital camera (yeah baby) so I will post some shots of the build.
