I am currently a college student who is going to school to get my bachelors in mechanical engineering. I want to give a salute to all the students who are building their rigs while they are going to school. I want to see all the rigs that ya'll have built while going to school, by your own funding (absolutely none that were built using mommy and daddy's money:flipoff2: ) To all of those who are schooling and tooling, this  is for you.
To start off, here's my work in progress. Currently under the knife for a 44/9", np435, np208, and some other goodies.

Daddy didn't pay for this. I got this truck when I was 15 and started their. It has been through many different setups and configurations before it's current state. I ran IFS lifts for awhile...I was young and dumb.
I play football for Rice University in Houston, TX and have very little time. So while others go to Mexico for Spring Break, I wrench...and weld...and torch...and grind.
I work on others cars in my spare time to buy parts for mine.
I have currently yanked off the ORU SAS hangers and I'm building new ones that incorporate a little more lift because my front winch bumper and 12K Mile Marker has caused my driveshaft to compress too much and my 46" MTs rub while turning off camber.
I'll post pics when done.

I don't have any good wheeling pics of mine in it's current configuration, but here's a poser pic.
I'm going on my 5th year at mich. tech, persueing a BS in MET.
This truck has been my DD on and off since I was 16, and was my DD for my first and part of my 4rth years of college.
there is ZERO high dollar parts on the rig, no bling, no prefab parts..
89' F-150
306 V-8, 4bbl, intake, cam, ported heads, headers.. the usual blah blah 6800rpm small block.
NP435 tranny.
Kustom BW 13-56 doubler(torch cuts, and arc welded, no plasma/mig/tig here..) into a twinsticked 205 (123:1 crawl)
spooled 9" out back, with home made disc brakes
HP44 up front, with a lockright, SASed with 79' ford parts, and 6" superflex coils(ramps a 1050, with a 122" wheelbase)
kustom grooved 38" gumbos(soon to be replaced)
onboard air
Right now it's under the knife to mount my 20K PTO winch, extended radius arms, and either inboarded 63" chevy leafs, or a 4 link with coils out back.
The other rig is my DD/tow rig
7.3 IDI diesel, 5 speed, 10.25 rear, and a kingpin 60 up front, on 35's.

Awesome responses, it's amazing how many college wheelers are going for their ME's...that just shows you where the future of this sport is going. Those are some sweet rigs, and about the girl...i'll just have to see about the whole marriage part (i'm 21, and i think 45 is a little young for marriage). If anybody has any suggestions on how i can resize my damn pics so you can read the whole thread w/o scrolling back and forth, shoot me a pm or just post up. Thanks, and keep em coming.

Well I don't have any pics of mine yet, I'm still in college Wichita State U, at the time My jeep sits in the garage on Jackstands, It's a 97 wrangler going up onto rockwells and 46's with a buncha new stuff comin in about a month, But I could really use some longer days, go to school mornings, I work for myself, then work on The jeep at night, I built the Jeep with my money and rebuilt it, and one more time, I've had the Jeep for a long ime bought it out of a salvage yard and saved it from a horrible fate, only bad thing about summer is theres no school, but theres lakes callin me, gotta get out on the boat :smokin:.

kinda funny... i'm procrastinating on studying for finals while replying to this thread...
i built this at my parents' house durring the summer, i lived at an apartment this year, with a small 1 car garage with no power, it sucked.
i cant say i built it without help from my parents, they are very generous and pay my rent, so my paycheck can go strait to the wheeler. plus they let me build it in thier driveway. oh ya, the winch was a christmas gift.
this year its just been about keeping it running enough to make the next trip, i have alot of bandaid fixes from this year i need to go over this summer.
best choice i've made while in college was to join the 4 wheel drive club. if you are in college join the four wheel drive club, if it sucks make it better, if there isnt one start one.
looking at the more hardcore guys in the club... myself included, there is no reason you cant have a very capable rig while in college, you just have to make wheeling a huge part of your life outside of school, a sacrifice i'm willing to make. sometimes i wish i had a 2" lifted tundra instead of the s10, but then i slap myself back in line.

Started this build 2nd Semester of my High school senior year and attending UT of Chattanooga as a freshman this year.
Have had help with some of the welding and torching, but the work and funding is mine.
Heres a list of what I've done(The project is going to slow to start a build up thread):
Yota 3pack+overload Rears in the front
2wd 63" Chevies w/overload w/stock shackles in the rear
Chevy Camaro calipers and Z71 rotors in the rear
W56 Transmission from 89 4runner
Next on list:
Power Steering
Crossover/Hysteer
Replacing Birfields w/Longfields as soon as they break
2.28x2.28 dual transfer case; have the donor reduction box just no adapter:(
Flatbed, and full exo -- and alot of fender hacking
Welding the rear and maybe the front, haven't decided on that one.
Probably going w/the 38.5x11 tsl Bogger or 38x12.5 tsl SX
and should end up with a 84:1 crawl ratio when i done, depending on if i change the drive gears.
on and a blingin sr5 guage cluster
I have tons of pictures of the progress on photobucket, but heres a couple...

Hey man, why does it just have to be college students, you guys get more credit for buying things than us young guys that dont go to college, I built my truck with my own funding while working more then full time. I if I was at college I could have got many loans to pay for my truck and just pay them off later ......... For all the guys and girls out there that think you have to go to college to make it, ..........you dont .......... but there should be no difference between a college builders rig and others non going to college asses rigs :flipoff2:

Thats exactly it, going to college is an advantage because we have access more loans...since we dont have to spend 3,000 or more a semester on tuition and then 600 on books...Man, I'm going to get another loan right now!

I dont' know a lot about finance, but I'm pretty sure that banks will loan you money too, not just some college pricks like us w/ no financial obligations :flipoff2: . Loans are the easy way out, and a waste of money if you ask me. I also said I wanted to see rigs built using your own funds, not someone elses(i.e. mommy daddy loan or bank loan).
If you want praises for being a young builder, then that's great, but you are no different than some 40 year old who is building a rig ...just b/c you have a full-time job. In my first two years of school, I was holding down a full-time job, going to school, and building a rig. I'm in no ways trying to brag, but others who are able to do all 3 and still keep the grades, job, and have a kick-ass rig are somewhat talented. NOt to even mention a girlfriend who takes half your money in the process.

Normally I'm all about getting some (getting some every night AND through some parts of the day  ) but I'm kicking my GF out (for reasons unrelated to wheeling). She's been gone 3 days and I have made more progress on my jeep in those 3 days than I have in months.

Nice thread. Guess I'll join as a junior at TCU. Sorry I don't have a picture. Need to get a red star! It's a sprun under CJ7 on 36s, 304/NP435/300, detroits f/r, stock axles with upgraded shafts. Not too extreme, but fun. I've paid for pretty much all of it myself. I didn't have a place to work on my rig the past two years, but live in a house now and have a garage to work in. Well, its my 21st today so I think I'll go drive my Jeep around!

Get your time in now boys! I'm out of college a couple of years now and WISH I'd put more time and summer money towards the jeep instead of girls and beer in college. I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree, and got a good paying job. But you get a good job, then you work alot of hours, buy a house, do landscaping :mad3:, buy a new truck, invest in retirement, get a "long term" girlfriend ... then things get pretty thin for the poor old jeep. Fortunately I'm not married yet ... so I'm goin like hell on the jeep before I have the justify my money to someone else

Well, currently I am completing my Associates degrees in Welding and Residential/Commercial Electricity. My rig is currently an almost stock 1978 Chevrolet K10. I am just getting some things together slowly to work on it. I am getting a mig welder and air compressor here in a couple of months. After I do my body work and make some new bumpers, a local autobody guy is doing a free paint job on it. I am also planning on some axle upgrades within the next 9 months and a winch. I will be doing other odd jobs on it as well. For now, my goal is to just get it back on the road. I just need to make time and replace the master cylinder and the battery....after I move to the new house.

What kind of job did you get after you graduated? Like it?
Corrupt.
How did you do your fenders...looks like you just took em off.
What about "soon to be college students"...? HAHA. My high school graduation is tomorrow. Had this since my junior year. Build racecars and components on the side to support it...time is my only restriction right now. Start college in August for business management and ME...want to be succesful in this racecar building business.
Anyways, specs on the rig are as follows:
* '73 Dodge Pickup 318/727/NP205(just turned 70k orig. miles)
* Axles: D44/D60 both 3/4 Ton with 4.10 posis(rear is getting a locker soon)
* Tires/Wheels: H1 Hummer Beadlocks, and 36" Wrangler II's
*Lift: 6" Springs in rear with shackle flip, 4" springs in front with 2" longer hangers and shackles(not installed yet)
Future mods include: Tube bed, Custom Fabbed Front and Rear Bumper which will both have reciever hitches for a winch, as well as a 440 which I have all the pieces for, just need to assemble. The lift, axles, and wheels and tires are all going under it within the next month. Now that school is out, I have time to play! :)

ALL paid for and built by PORCers themselves in carports, parking lots, rental properties, etc.

This one's a whole club project that many members pitched in to help with, built in the president's garage during the year. Started out last fall as an ebay disaster CJ7 w/ a junk 305, stock axles w/ like new boggers 39.5 boggers. PO used herculiner to hide the terrible "body".
Everything was scrapped except the frame and front clip.

We've brought together a real good group of guys (and a couple girls) at Purdue to make up the Purdue Off Road Club. Over 60 members last year and some real cool rigs being built on college budgets and student schedules. Here's my XJ in its most rescent pics, flexin on a buddies 44s at our campus lawn show. Still a work in progress. In the background of the last pic you can see a rig we built in like 4 months from a bare CJ frame. Its intense, 39.5 boggers on 60/14 bolt combo. Powered by a 502!
7 of us are actually living together next year in what we have coined the PORC house. I'll be doing a glory year 5th year in Ag and Bio Engineering.

The last time I took the yellow truck out for action-I broke the 1/2 ton stuff-a few axle shafts and teeth on the ring gear-I already had my one ton driveline bought-so i was just finishing it off and giving me reason to do the dually conversion. I will post up some more pics in the next week at www.timsheesley.com
I am doing my one ton CJ build at the same time-among other projects...
Although I finally graduated-I give lots of credit to the budget builds of students-having a money crunch can make you really get creative on finding parts and funding your build. I bought and sold and parted out lots of junk to pay for my rides...

Glad to welcome a fellow Purdue student. We're a little slow over the summer since not a whole lot of people are around campus but you should be good to go now. Same goes for our forums, not a whole lot of action on them until the fall when we all come back to campus. If you'd like to become an Alumni member of PORC just PM me and we can talk more about it.

Do I count? Kinda young. Still work my ass off for it. Got it when I was 15 working a big ass irish breeders guarden for $8 an hour... spent every bit of it for $1900 on this jeep. My parents did help me buy wheels and tires but that was my last christmas present from them and I didnt have money to replace my old ones. I didnt care I was gonna drive on them even though they all had many plugs and patchs. They thought I was going to get killed.
Attending ITT Tech winter semester for different communication tech.
I make a big $6.50 an hour ( Just got a raise last week if that helps you) and I only have a little over $3k in it and it still sucks.
I cant weld, I hardly know shit about how to fix anything. I'm just now getting a big enough air compressor to run impact wrenches on and I never get to four wheel because the damn piece of shit is always broken or I cant aford it. Just got myself another 304 to put in it thats pretty well built by a good builder he put some work in it.
But... I'LL NEVER GIVE UP! :flipoff2: Were building some trails on my buddies 180+ acker farm which should be local, fun, and free.

Don't get me wrong, I've paid for almost everything on that rig, except for the winch and stinger. The winch was my graduation present, and the stinger a birthday present from a girl that I dated for a couple years. Other than that it was all my blood and sweat during freshman year that got it there. Before it was SOA on 35's 8.8 rear, that kinda thing. I really enjoy it how it is now. I am gonna spool the rear though and get rid of the locker since its strictly a trail rig now, and I need to recenter my rims cuz I'm just running spacers at the moment and it looks off with only spacers up front and stock backspacing in the rear.
But anyway, thanks for the compliment.

Also an engineering major. Started with a stock '55 and have been building it for two years now. Only parts that are stock now are the body and Dana 18 twin stick case. Takes all my money and extra time, but going to school and building a rig does have its advantages. You don't have extra money so you learn how to build it yourself and most importantly, you get to use the auto shop to do mods!!!:D

I'm 19 now in college and I've had my blazer since I was 16. Totally rebuilt it with dads help cause I was still in high school. School was over so ripped it back apart and here I am. D60 front all 35 spline with chromo's, detroit, and crossover highsteer. Rear 14 bolt with detroit and discs. Hummer beadlocks with 42" tsl swampers. Saving up some more money to drop in my built 496 to finisher her off for the most part. All on my own now since I'm out of school.

Just graduated a month ago from CSU Fresno (Fresno State) with a degree in Geomatics Engineering, its just a fancy term for land surveying.
Bought my jeep spring break of my sophmore yr in high school. Got a job that summer to fund the Pro Comp 4" Lift and 33's and from there, the rest is history. 6 yrs later and many nights & weekends (and some ditching of classes) the complete build is in my sig. A lot of fun, and it kept me out of trouble. Mom said i was throwing my $$ away, Dad said it was better than drugs & booze and Mom stopped bothering me. :D
Worked all through college, my last 2 yrs it was 30 hrs/week & 16-18 units so i could finish in 4 yrs.

Just in case someone didn't read it during all of the other quotes. My truck would be a lot more built if I didn't have a g/f during the first 3 years of college.:shaking:

32" MT/R's on 15x8 MT Classic II's
rear Isuzu 12 bolt, 4.56's, ARB locker
front Isuzu 10 bolt, 4.56's, open (not spending money to lock up IFS that is just getting torched off anyway)
Tera Lows 3.07 t-case gears
barn-built rock sliders, rear bumper, front hitch point, etc
I just finished classes for my graduate program (masters degree) in Occupational Therapy. Six months of clinical rotations to go and then I can get a real job and start on the real projects. Already have a HP44 to hang up front and 5.38 gears for the rear axle. It's no tube buggy; but it handles the trails a lot better than most people initially expect!

How did I miss this?
I'll be a senior next year at PC in south carolina.. Still daily driving what's left of my 1994 grand cherokee, paid for all by me through various summer jobs and a little part time work during the school year. Here's a trail shot and the latest round of modifications..

and jordan, you're the only one crazy enough to tackle a springover/axle swap/tranny/tcase swap all at once
I'll add my project to this list. Its a 1987 Isuzu Trooper II
It was the first vehicle I ever bought got it right before I turned 16. First mods where sliders and a bumbers that I built in my high school shop class. Then I got a 3 in. lift from TrooperRS here on the board. My senior year of high school I started my SAS and motor swap.
I am going for 3.4 from a tacoma and a toy auto with dual cases. D44 front and Isuzu 12 bolt rear. Its taken alot longer than I had planned and still isn't done but I am in my first year of college and just landed a 40k a year job while still in college full time:) And I have payed for it all by myself as well as done most of the work on it.

Thanks for the confidence builder Cam. That CB antenna is gonna get ripped off on our next trip, when we get to try out the new cage. I've finally got the parts collection to piece mine together, so I'll be ready to go in the next month or so. All these rigs are giving me more inspiration to finish mine up, so keep posting up.

Look for a buildup thred in september
My insperation:http://www.liftedlimo.com/photos/smith1.jpg
I drove this around for a month then decided I HAVE TO BUILD ONE whatever the cost.
Started with this:
http://www.liftedlimo.com/photos/1220613.jpg
Add this:
http://myspace-636.vo.llnwd.net/00706/63/63/706423636_l.jpg
And this:
http://myspace-544.vo.llnwd.net/00865/44/58/865628544_l.jpg
And you get?
A half done limo, that I should be outside working on insted of posting pics. Anyone who has been to a college party in a limo knows that partys go all night and day. Add a huge lift, and then things get wild:evil: . So I dropped out, and have to finish it for next fall to start the partying again. Check out the website with some old pics on it and pics when the limo wasnt lifted of the partys.

I am a freshman at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. Bought the car for $5,000, and have since started to add little bits and pieces. Owned a 75 CJ5 for a while and decided to sell for $5,000 bringing my budget to $7,500. I went for a Disco because I used to have a 99 Disco II. After $1,500 of engine mods, mainly fixing sh!t. I have $1k leftover, and now beefing up the shocks. No parent money here, just savings, x-mas money, b-day cash, graduation money, and money from work. I will confess though, rents do pay for insurance and gas.:(

This is my rig. Not too many of these happy little fellas out there. She is still fairly stock, not too built mainly due to money and time. Mech engineering takes up a lot of time and I think its more important to concentrate on my studies instead of the truck. A mechanical engineering degree will get me farther than a car.
I am going to make some significant changes this summer. I already got the 34s on and now I am working on various things that will be hidden beneath the sheet metal. Main problem I have is that any upgrade is usually never a bolt-on affair, it has to be custom. This slows down the process and increases the cost. My little job doesn't pay for much.

100% Agreed. Only reason I dropped out was becasue I had a few companys wanting to advertise on the side of the limo. Thats why I am building it, to do advertising. Of course, both of those comapnys have backed out(imagine that!). But the response of everyone else wanting me to come to thier partys is overwhelming. Most of the local buisnesses want to advertise in one way or another. Anyways enough about me.
Sweet Rig!! I havent seen one of those for a long time, let alone wheeling. There was a green one around here and the guy never took it off somthing more than a gravel road. With that, youd be really popular around here actully wheeling it. My 57 Willys wagon(if it was back together) would look sweet wheeling with ya! Next time im on the eastern sea board with me jeep, Ill look you up lol.

THis thread kick ass. I am really glad to see what other college kids are doing with their own money and no help. So far i have built 3 rigs.
1966 International scout 800 someone offered me more than i could ever hope for it so i sold that one.
Then started building the parts rig 76 scout II. Ended with a SOA, 35's 6 point roll cage new paint, etc,
Now a 1982 Toyota truck, Bobbed lifted locked 36 tsl rebuilt motor 5.29 gears. Crossover ifs box.
Since i just bought a bunch for tghe toyota i will save for a red star to post some pictures of them.
Good luck guys and keep building

Thats exactly it, going to college is an advantage because we have access more loans...since we dont have to spend 3,000 or more a semester on tuition and then 600 on books...Man, I'm going to get another loan right now!
try 45,000 dollars out in student loans. i go to wyotech, and added 3 more classes. i work at a engine building shop, then go to school for 9 hours... monday through friday. so from 9:30 AM to 2:00 am i am either at school or work.
and any money i have left after i pay all my bills (about 100 bucks a month seriously) goes to my blazer.
and its me paying my way. i just set up an account with the local welding supply store, so i can get a millermatic 251 with a dual bottle rack, after all the wire, gas, cylinder, and other misc. stuff, it came out to 2400 bucks.
i am a very good bargain shopper, i have most all the parts ready to do my solid axle swap, and i have more money into my tires than the rest of the blazer and parts combined...
dana 30 front axle (bought an entire cherokee for 100 bucks)
ford 8.8 rear axle (100 bucks)
1988 s-10 blazer (150 bucks)
5- 33x13.50x15 LTB's (my "thanks for being a good boyfriend present" from my girlfriend... totally random gift...)
misc parts gathered here and ther for free (its nice to know people...)
the tear down starts next week in mt TINY one car garage (hopefully the landlord don't find out... i have to run an extention cord for the welder off of our dryer in the basement...)
i've had the blazer for about 3 years, and wheeled it completely stock to hone my driving skills.

Yeah, there is a program in Washington state that allows you to go to community college for 2 years and earn high school and college credits. so by the time i graduate from high school in 2008 i should already have my associates degree. im 15 cause the cutoff date for my class is early september and my birthday is august 9th so i made it into grad class of 2008 by just a month.
The willys is a 1950 but it has the flat fenders like a 1949 and earlier. its got a ford 289 and 3 speed manual tranny from a 1965 fairlane, and has the stock dana 18 transfer case. ithe rear axle is a dana 44 semi-floating and the front is either a dana 25 (what internet says) or a dana 44 (what prev. owner says). either way they are both open diffs and have 5.38 gearing. and it has power steering, whether its a saginaw conversion or not, we may never know....
Heres what it looked like when we brought it home, lol:D

Hey man, why does it just have to be college students, you guys get more credit for buying things than us young guys that dont go to college, I built my truck with my own funding while working more then full time. I if I was at college I could have got many loans to pay for my truck and just pay them off later ......... For all the guys and girls out there that think you have to go to college to make it, ..........you dont .......... but there should be no difference between a college builders rig and others non going to college asses rigs :flipoff2:
You are a retard with no idea how much time college takes. It's nothing like high school where you can just go, and then go home. You have to study for every single class, every day. Hours on end. Sleep is many times not an option. I'll just stop there, because I'm starting to get real heated...
i just gradutated this year, ME at WPI
here is my rig i built up and wheeled through out school

lots of other crap
wish i never pulled her apart
So do I... :tear:
I'm about to start my second year of college. I'm an ME major now, and I currently have a 2000 Ram. I have worked since I was 13, almost always having 2 jobs. Sometimes three. I never spend my money in stupid ways (the last year or so excluded), and I always keep every part that I might use later. I have gotten a lot of real good deals on parts in the past, and I'm very patient. I just got the truck paid off, and now I can start the build of this one. I've had a few others in the past... mostly old Chevy's. I'll post up again once I have something noteworthy, but for now...
GOOD JOB GUYS! Motivating, for sure!
Does anybody else plan to "keep it forever"? Or is it just your college wheeler, and you plan to get a better one later?

Oh, and I have a very serious girlfriend aswell. She's my biggest MMA fan, she loves my truck, and puts way too much pressure on me in my academics... EXACTLY what I need.
If it came down to it, I'd pick her. I can always buy another truck, but I couldn't ever find another her... sorry for the sappy shit guys, carry on.

First off- American- youve got to relax, if you cant balance college and your hobbies then learn to manage your time better. Saying your geting "heated" just shows your age. Some people on here are at half ass colleges where their degree will hardly mean a thing, if its even credited. Thus, they can get a job to pay for good times. Perhaps people like you and I went to better colleges and had to work things out. So, if your doing as well as you say be the bigger man and let the little ones slide by. Not to mention, its retarded to use student loans to play with. Great way to start a life out of college in debt.
If it came down to it, I'd pick her. I can always buy another truck, but I couldn't ever find another her... sorry for the sappy shit guys, carry on.
The above comment is what made me respond to this whole post-young love my friend. Trust me, every girl (usually) will be better than the next. I sold my first toyota project for a woman- big mistake. There will always be a woman out there for you, always.
Edit: I just graduated and will be hosting a project build soon. 85 Toyota, 5" AP lift, hysteer, flatbed, 5.29s locked frt/welded rear, and dual cases. Took four years to find everything at a good price.

give it time, after so long you will realize that you found the right woman and want to start a family, and its hard to run a family and keep a decent rig on the trails, but for those of you that have, more power to ya and i hope it all goes well, ive just seen to many of my friends give up their rigs/toys for the woman.
awsome rigs btw, nice to see people still building rigs even tho in school, i managed to build my 78 f150 up while in training and that was hard enough, and it still isnt finished due to money issues (damn boggers are expensive :flipoff2: )

thats different tho, if i think its the wise choice i would have no problem doing it. esp. if i wanted to start a family... that comes much much later tho.

heh, thats the reason my EX left me, she wanted my money to spend on cloths and i said hell naw, my truck was in my life before her and was my DD so it got my money first, but you think about this, the older you get the harder it will be to find women so you start young at maybe 20-25 and find a nice woman, give it another few years till you settle down and start a family then some people might find it wise to sell the rig or toss it in the garage till a later date to start working/wheeling it again

 That shows your age. Kind of arrogant to assume that just because others can find the time and money to juggle everything and still build a rig, they went to a "half ass college".
I do believe someone on this very thread build his truck while juggling school and sports, AND attending an Ivy league college... what excuse do you have for him?
Or for everyone else pursuing quite difficult degrees (ME's for example) while still juggling school, extracurriculars (that includes a gf. After all, ass is just an extracurricular activity:D ), and a job?

Edited because this doesnt matter- everyone wheel, break stuff, fix it, roll it, whatever, and have a good one.
Touché(sp??) to a degree, however, it wasn’t all an assumption. In a sense though, you somewhat proved my point by stressing "an ivy league college." Some colleges are more time consuming than others, period. That has no judgment on character at ALL. College students (not as a whole) have far less bills because mommy and daddy pay for them (rent, some food, books, tution, health insurance, car insurance, etc). Thus they have more income to use, which would rock. Yeah yeah yeah... go ahead an post up "bullshit, I pay for all that."
Im not any better than anyone here and this doesnt need to be a pissing contest. I think some people on here are just not as honest as others. Heck- bottom line- build your rig and finish is before your out on your own in the real world.

I'm starting my second year, straight A's save for one B (damned department heads...), considering forestry/conservation, education (both for the big $$$ :D ), or mechanical engineering. Yes, I know I need to make up my mind, thank you. I drove a semi around Chicago for 4 years to save up enough to put myself through school (or at least get a decent start).
I've got a '76 3/4-ton GMC pickup
-400 SBC w/CC cam+VT, intake, mod. Q-Jet, headers, full duals
-soon to be NV4500 (this is where that would-be cell phone bill goes...:D )
-soon to be Lomax 205 (both should be here soon) w/fabbed twin stick
-D60 front, 14b rear w/Detroit and fabbed rear disc conv., 4.56s
-ORD X-over
-4" springs
-fabbed fully adjustable anti-wrap bar, dual jerry can mounts, High-Lift mount, and I'm building a spring-loaded, lockable toolbox cradle to lift toolbox to top of bedrail so I don't have to climb in and out of the bed. :smokin:
-33" tires (35s are next when these go)
-decent stereo
-a good deal of rust and dead-reliable
Also understand that, as you may have guessed by the relatively mild specs, this is my DD and I've probably spent more in gas in the last few years than MA has spent on the Big Dig  but at least I get to drive my offensive junk everyday and garner incredulous stares from the (daddy-bought) Lexus or Navigator drivin' punks I attend school with.
I don't have any pics because I don't own a digital camera and I couldn't post 'em anyway w/o a red star (I know, I know). I don't have a cell phone, HS internet, cable/sat. (I do have a TV but it's a 13"), any sort of video game equipment, a home stereo system, any sort of I-pod type deal, and when it comes to myself, I'm generally considered a cheap bastard. The only reason I have a computer is because my dad bought it for me as a "starting school"/birthday present. I have only been to a mechanic one time in my life, and that was mostly for advice on axle trouble with my first 4WD. The only vehicle I own that is younger than me is my bike which is an '83 Honda 750, and nothing I own has functional air conditioning, but I'm not bitching. You gotta prioritize. What some people spend on this "indispensible" crap, I spent on a very well equipped shop, strong parts, and school, and *so far*, I have accumulated $0 debt except for my standard home mortgage.
Like I said, I'm not complaining at all. On the contrary, I'm having a blast but you can't have everything.
Sorry for the disertation. I didn't mean to type my whole GD life story, but with all the comments about doing this stuff while in college, I just figured I'd offer up my position.
BTW, the ME correlation here is wild!

What the heck, I guess I fall into this catagory so I'll post. I'm a Senior Agricultural Economics major at Virginia Tech (I do Mechanical Engineering for fun:p ). My rig is no where near as hardcore as most of these, but then again I purposely designed it not to be. Just wanted something somewhat capable that I could poke around the local trails with.
Currently I'm taking 18 credit hours, managing my own small business and I have a gf who's very wonderful, I won't say she's understanding, she more than that, she encourages my hobby, lol.
On to the truck:

From behind, before I took it apart AGAIN:

As it sits now (well, the motor is in and a few more things are in):

Then theres this little Gem, I have more money in this than the whole rest of the truck, lol:

I'm real lucky to have my home farm shop just an hour and a half away which is where I've done 95% percent of the buildup. Now that 'most' of the fabrication is done I'll be driving it down here to Tech where more parking lot wrenching will ensue. Just small stuff is left like brakes and a front locker, so no need to take up shop space at home. The whole buildup thread is in my sig if anyone is interested.

I just finished doing a spring over on my scout, so I guess I will finally post it up here. It is a 1979 IHC Scout II with a 345/t18/d20/d44 f/r. Everything is still stock on it so far, aside from the spring over. I have some 36" TSL's and some hummer beadlocks I'm going to slap on as soon as I buy some centers for the rims. I am a Political Science major at a local college here in Corpus Christi, TX. I originally bought this scout for $400 from a buddy of mines aunt.
