Can anyone recommend a good tranny shop in the South Bay. I need the bands in my Dodge adjusted.

Certified Transmission in Gilroy. I know a few others on the board who use that shop too. A+ work. Its where I used to take my dodge.

I've taken 2 of my trucks to sunco transmissions, on winfield ave. in south san jose. My Bronco with its C-6 went in about 10 years ago and 130K later it still shifts!
Anyway, just another place to check out.

Why don't you adjust the bands yourself? It's pretty easy to do...

I went and got the fluid changed and now is totally slips :( I guess that's a common thing that occurs. Looks like it's time for a rebuild.
I am getting quoted $1400-$1800 for a rebuild.

Hey man I know you probably already know this but stock rebuilds are almost a waste of money. Lots of people including myself have only gotten 15K miles on them, Even on a stock truck w/o bombs. Eventually we live and learn and get a real BUILT tranny by one of the big companies. DTT, ATS, Suncoast, Gorend Bro's. I know thoes cost more coin then you want to spend, but think about how long youre gonna have the truck and how many more time you will put 20K miles on it and then add in the price of a rebuild. If you want to keep it on the cheap but still have a little bit more realibality go with a new aftermarket converter from one of the companies I listed. Some local tranny shops are wise to how the ATS, and DTT build trannies and try to beef up their rebilds with some of their parts for about a halfway price, they turn out to be a pretty deacent tranny for a stock truck.

But if you even want to start playing around with HP and all the available goodies out there definetly go with a pro built $4K tranny.

Sorry I cant help you out on a good local tranny guy, but if you want a bomb tranny I can help you out there. You might also want to look into a used DTT or ATS tranny they last forever and go for pretty cheap. I let mine go for $2,500+ a truck

Trust me I've thought about it. I just don't know how long I am going to keep this truck. I was looking at getting something with 4 doors as I have two kids. This truck is paid off and I don't really want a payment of a new truck.
Where can I find a used tranny? Dumping in $4K into a truck this is worth $10K just doesn't make sence if I only keep it for another year.

car-part.com for used trannys. I just searched, and the only one I saw was $1650 in san jose.

Bob at Sunco built a nice T400 for me. He has built several trans with good results for a buddy of mine.

when your dodge trans starts going out, it eats into the back of the case, and has to replaced on occasion. band adjustments are a no no. because the friction material is removed from the band from wear and tear, and it eats into the drum, more so after you adjust the bands. get ready for some hard parts to pay for.
what dodge do you have? is it a overdrive trans? or a 3 speed? if it is a 3 speed it shouldn't cost more than 1200 for a shop to r&r and rebuiild it. but if it is a overdrive, they are electronic, you will run into bad trans harnesses, broken solenoids on reassymbly, and a week or 2 in the shop. best way to go if overdrive, buy a 3yr warranty trans from the dealer for 2500, and have a shop install it. if there is ever a problem with it after that, go to the dealer for the warranty. I am not shittin you this is the best way. the 2 we have done here in the last month have been nightmares, but mostly because of the brake switch and abs sensor problems that are popping up, and the collapsed trans coolers in the radiators.

I have the 1997, so it's the overdrive.

don't touch the bands, you will make it worse, i build transmissions in NC and i have recently done 5 or 6 dodges in the past month. Its prolly a 518, which is basically a torque flite with overdrive added on. It doesn't chew the case just the center support and welds the shaft to it. I can't belive someone quoted you 1400, ours would 1800-2300. SO i would go with the 2300 dealer one with 3 year warantee

I'm not so sure NOODLES know's the intricies of the Dodge 47/48re. Yes He has good genral info about trannies, mainly your older classic styles like a TH350.

The tranny in these Dodges are different and basically a pice of shit. The quality upgrades in some of these tranny replace all kinds of parts with billet, electronic programs, $1,000 converts ect.

It sounds like NOODLES trucks have been have lots of tranny issues, and keeps on buying them and having getting warentee work done to them. Like I said myself included have bought factory rebuilt, and Joe's Tranny Word tranny and they all dont last. The dodge has a bad design and places like DTT fix these common problems and give you a indestructble tranny caple of holding back 600HP, 30PSI in 4X4 at the line on a drag and rocket off to a 1.6ses 60-foot time.

I'm not saying the average person needs that but that what these tranny companies see as their standard run of the mill tranny(but you should add a billet inputshaft for $600.)

Hey if I offended NOODLES That wasnt my intention, I just want to lead people down the right path, that and its late and ive been drinking

they aren't my trucks, I have my own shop, and have worked in the transmission business for 10 yrs. I don't have trans build benches and a 1600 dollar transmission jack in my shop for nothing. it is cheaper for you to buy a trans from the dealer and install it. you will get 3 yr warranty compared to 1 yr from most transmission shops, or a 30 day warranty if they only repair it. last one we did was a repair for 1800. but for a friend he gets lifetime warranty beech.

not really, but if you don't use Mopar style (+3 or +4) trannys slip and don't go into overdrive.
Check you repict, it may say it, also the +3 and +4 should of cost about 5-6$ a quart.
