I don't know of anyone that has done this but I don't think the Sammy tranny would survive behind the V-6 engine. It would be a good conversion engine though, nice power.

I've put 2.9 liter V6 ford engine with ford tranny in samurai. It works excellent plenty of torque and hp's and bigger clutch!!!...only bad thing is engine is heavy. And you need to put the radiator on the back if you don't wan't to make body changes and you need to have at least 5-6 inches of lift to clear front axle from the oil pan.

I have not heard of a 3.0L with a Zuki trans behind is....If you are going to go through that much work, put a stronger trans behind it like a Toy W56.

Personally, I'd use a late model 2.9L V6. Its a better engine IMO.

Remember, the 2.9 and the 3.0 share NOTHING in common. the blocks are different.

Why do you want to keep the Zuki trans anyhow?

i don't necessarily want to keep the zuk tranny. just a thought. i may put the tranny and t-case from the ranger in the zuk to complete the swap.

here are some more pictures. not specifically of the radiator, but maybe you can get the idea. there really is plenty of room. if cutting the body is an issue, than the radiator could be pushed closer to the motor and a pusher fan used. because of the type of wheeling i do, i run my motor really hard, and need all of the cooling i can get, and so i cut the front up a bit so i could use a puller fan. tauris fan to be exact, it is 5 inches thick. i am sure there are other fans that could be used that are thinner , but this is what i did.

i initially cut more out than i needed, so the bare metal you see there is some that i welded backinto place.

I am in starting process of doing exactly that, I have a 3.0 vulcan motor mated to the ford 5 speed AOD5 trany, the tail shaft is custom to fit a Danna 300 TC.
I bought the whole thing as a package deal. There are a lot of things you will need from the ford. I did not get all the wiring so that is going to be a pain (get all the wiring) what you dont need send to Me.. LOL No really.
Also the Ford tranny is hydrolic clutch that will have to be fabed up... I have not started to put it in yet, as of now I have just finished gutting it for the transfordmation.. Keep me informed if you end up doing this maybe we can learn from one another.

actually the ford tranny can be modified to use the sami clutch cable, just be creative.

I think I remember you. Croatia Trophy 2005, right? Green sami spring over with the exocage! I was co-driver of the white Toyota that ended the race against a tree... :D
If I remember well you were using 31" tires, same tread as Boggers, but you had quite a few problems during the very last days of race, didn't you? I've heard axles and t-case. Does the stock t-case hold up to that engine?

I just had my Samurai out for the first time since we started this THREE years ago (complete buildup) and we're running a Ford 2.9L w/ the Ford auto tranny.

However, we ran into some serious cooling issues! I got the biggest radiator I thought would fit and the highest flowing pusher fan I could squeeze in and it's still not enough so I'm kind of ticked about that. :mad3:

Here's what we used, let me know what you think:

Summit Racing part - GRI-1-26182-X (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=GRI%2D1%2D26182%2DX&N=0&autoview=sku)

And a zirgo electric fan. I don't have the specs on that but it was only what we could fit, installed as a pusher fan. There's also no shroud so that's probably a part of the problem.

How hot is it gettin on the temp Quage and are you sure the guage is good?
The dimensions are not much smaller than the stock rad I have from the donner and it may be thicker than the org it is real narrow

3 Yrs, I will shoot it if it takes that long.

I'd shut it down at 230. It is a brand new autometer so I'm sure the gauge is good, plus it was boiling so that kind of made it obvious.

We're going to think of some ideas but hopefully just figure out a way to get a bigger fan in there. I think it's overheating mainly due to the little fan not being able to move the air through the radiator, and there's no shroud.

It took three years to build the vehicle from the ground up, completely. We extended the frame/body, did the Ford 2.9L, C4 tranny, Toyota drivetrain, custom coil suspension, and tons more. I'll be posting a new thread in about 1-3 weeks with full details, pics, etc so keep an eye out for the 'project mayhem' thread. :)

the stock ford explorer radator fits between the frame rails and a ford tauris fan on low cools my 4.0 with zero problems under normal conditons. now when i get in the mud, and have tha hammer down, then my motor does start to get a tad hot. i am planning on chaning the wiring so the fan runs on high. the best thing is these parts are cheap. i would not run a pusher fan. puller fan will cool better.

mine took just about that long also, mainly becuase i didn't work on it often enough. but it is now done, and wow is 160hp alot of fun in a samurai. kinda hard on parts though, i am going to have to keep my foot out of it.

Yeah when we just had it out we reversed the polarity on the fan to make it pull out the front, and we took off the grille. :D It was kind of goofy but it did help. It drove around ~200ish if I was mostly going downhill and real careful.

So I'm thinking the radiator is OK, but I just need some serious help in the fan department. We cut a little more out and have 4" of fan room to play with, but the problem is it's only available in front of the radiator, the other side has practically no space between the engine. This is with cutting the latch off the hood and it's squished in there real well. I just don't know if we can fit a taurus fan in with 4".
