Hi I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to this sorta thing but. I have a stock 1.3 sami motor efi 91 with what i would guess to be 66 hp. I wanna boost its performance with a (fabricated) turbo boost kit. In your guys opinion what would be the most i would wanna boost that motor up to in hp? I love the little 1.3's they never seem to pop! the engine has 62,000 original miles to it (so pretty much just broken in...) with the regular oil changes and what not. if i boost it now with out the rebuild i know that could be a problem but meh its only a 1.3 there's lots up here to replace it with. just trying to have a little fun with my suzuki.

so any suggestions as to what i should boost it up to??? like in hp?

thanks
J

I ain't no expert on this stuff... but I hope you know whut yer doing. It will be a good learning project either way I expect. You will hafta make big changes in yer EFI. Yer MAP may hafta be changed I think, and maybe even yer ECM, to a hacked one if ya need to make internal changes (MAP calcs, spark/fuel tables). Maybe you will wanna go to a dry manifold, drill and weld in bungs for port injectors. Maybe go to MegaSquirt or a GM ECM to handle the mods. Think some GM ECMs can handle up to 2 atmospheres. I'll stop on this subject cuz I am not a knowledable person, lots better advisors out there.

I agree with you that the 1.3L is a dandy engine. We make get some flack over that but I have been driving mine for ten years... I drive like to tear the guts outta the lil thang and it never breaks. I have no idea how much boost or HP you should aim for. I know that for similar questions in the past folks have suggested that you simply put the DOHC in there, more performance and reliability with less cost. Others who have turboed the 1.3L say the same thing. But that doesn't seem to be the question you are asking. I hadda guess I'd say shoot for 100 hp. May not be a practical number but any less its like "why bother?", any more and you gotta go to more extreme measures (I seem to recall from similar conversations in the past). What do ya want it for with alla this turbo stuff and all? you know yer econmy is gonna be in the toilet. If you use it only infrequently, didja consider nitrous? I would be interested in turbo charging if alla the parts were ready-made. I would wanna do it for economy too, so I wouldn't wanna lower my compression. Even if i was limited to 2-3 lbs, I would get back some of the energy from the exhaust. I s'pose yer gonna lower the compression and CC out the head on yers?

it might be a good learning experience to learn how to build a turbo but i wouldnt do much to it in terms of boost! I blew my stock 1.3 apart , actually put 2 of the 4 rods through the block without and mods...its was just stock. I would save the cash and do a 16v swap or a 2.0 :D

what kind of wheeling do you plan on doing?

wheeling? well I won't wheel anything that doesn't look streetable.. nothing crazy just crawling... basically just wanna do this to give the 1.3 a bit of a good run befor i swap the thing for a toyota 22r or a v8 chev... still can't decide which mind you I'm kinda leaning toward the 22r for the sheer practicality of it... v8 chev would be a little much...

in short wanna just get it up and running with the boost and go from there...

i dont think that a turbo would be very good for rock crawling because of the turbo lag. supercharger would be nice, i know i have seen kits for that. probably better jsut getting rid of the 1.3. an efi ford 5.0 would be kinda cool. compact light weight, relatively economical.

Turbo lag is a thing of the past. You could probably go 7lbs of boost on a stocker. Probably a good 40%HP. BUT just do a 1.6 swap easier cheaper more reliable......THEN turbo that when you get board

thats odd because i recently drove a VW GTI that was only a few years old and it definitely had turbo lag. i was uder the impression that turbo lag is still an issue, especialy on smaller displacement engines.

well 7-8 psi max... anything over good buy bottom end... goo with a toy swap before doing a turbo swap...
