 My friend and I are putting a new flex plate on his truck and now we are trying to put it back together but we can't get it to go about 3/4 of an inch closer, we have already stripped out 2 bolts and lost one thread on the block so I need some help or tips on how to get it the last 3/4 inch. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the torque convertor came loose and walked out.

i would agree on the torque convertor having slid out...

PLEASE, tell me you aren't using the bolts to draw the tranny up to the engine :shaking: That's a definite no-no and you're liable to break something more than you have if you continue

the trans should slide right up to the motor, spinn the converter while pushing on it and make sure that it seats,if you pull it in with the bolts you will break the ears off the pump and that's it,the trans ahs to come out and fixed, 7 seconds of thinking can save you 150.00 bucks (depending on what tranns) and 3 days of down time

Everything should slide in with no problems or force on a automatic trans, the trans case should bolt up first then you slide the torque conv against the flex plate ( not to be sarcastic ). Either the conv is not all the way in ( it goes in one step, wiggle it back and forth while pushing to get it in another step ). hopes this helps. (Don't force it you could mess up the pump).

I learned this leasson the hard way. Except I was trying to fit the wrong sized torque converter in. It was thicker then the one I should have had. They sent me the wrong one. I ended up bending my flexplate (rubbed on the starter nose cone is the only way I knew). In my disgust while yanking the tranny back out, I dropped it off my jack, fell about a foot. I didn't know it then, but I broke my pump rotor. I didn't find that out until after I installed the correct torque converter and new flex plate. I put it all back together, fired up my truck to take a test drive, and it make this god aweful noise. Had to take the tranny out for the third time. Fortunetly the pump body wasn't scratched. If your finger nail gets caught while dragging it across the face you need to replace the pump. Pumps ain't cheap. Fortunately the rotor was.

You should never have to seat the tranny to the engine with the bolts.
The torque converter must be seated all the way in the pump.
When it is seated all the away you should have about 1/4" - 1/2" gap between the flexplate and torque converter while the tranny is fully bolted to the engine. You will then have to slide the torque converter out to seat against the flexplate and use the 3 bolts to hold it in place.

If your strugleing with it, something isn't right.

There are 3 different steps to seat the tc. Turbine shaft, converter ground sleeve and the pump.
