i just bought a 88xj and it starts fine and runs fine but when i put it in gear cuts out sometimes dies and something if you give it gas it will come back to a idle beside that it runs and shifts fine

when you say "besides"... how exactly do you get it to eventually run? Also, are we talking manual or AT?
