: PT needs help Sat night 6/10
Simon 06-10-2006, 06:36 PM PT just called me. He is stranded with an overheated RR and 12 foot u haul trailer midway between Pendleton and Baker City, Or. He has access to a car trailer in Portland and has his Discovery in Portland. He has a ride back to Portland. It sounded as if the RR is not repairable on the spot. I think the worry he had was towing the RR back, and some hesitation to do so with his Disco. That and the fact that he now has two lumps to tow back to PDX - the RR and the trailer. I talked to him about helping, as I have a 3/4 ton suburban. I hung up to check with the Home Office (aka wife) and found out that she had planned an early father's day for me tomorrow because we will be spending fathers' day travelling home from a convention. So I called PT back and left a VM indicating that I can help but it has to be tonight. I told him I'd be willing to pull an all nighter if need be, but I can not help tomorrow.
I just talked to him a second time and he is going to try to reach a PBBr who lives here. He is going to call on me as a last resort. He is now (6:30 pm) four hours from Portland.
I just left him anoter message asking him to call back and when he does I am going to suggest I just get in my suburban and head out there and grab his u haul and drag it back to Portland. Then all he will have to deal with tomorrow will be the RR. But he is, indeed, hesitant to use the Discovery to drag the RR.
Any volunteers willing to help make the whole PT in Oregon experience a little less unpleasant?

PTSchram 06-11-2006, 02:46 AM Thanx to Simon, the U-haul trailer made it to PDX. Now I need to get the damned Range Rover home, or help with getting away with setting it afire.
Anybody up for some hot dogs cooked over a roaring Range Rover? I really don't wanna try to pull it home through the Columbia River Gorge behind my Disco for all the right reasons.
Ike-expect a phone call sometime later today, it's Simon's idea.

Plans?
DieLucas! 06-11-2006, 11:18 AM While this doesn't help the present situation, it is cheaper to have a Rover transported to Indy than it is to drive it (considering food, lodging, and pulling a trailer). What was wrong with the Disco that you couldn't take the trailer on the trip to begin with?
Serious One 06-11-2006, 11:54 AM Love to help...stuck teaching all week.
Crap!
Don't torch the RR. It's got at least one part on it I want.
Sorry to hear 'bout the troubles PT. Wish I could help.

Simon 06-11-2006, 04:31 PM Just called PT on arriving home from a family hiking trip in the gorge to see if he needed to borrow my Suburban to go back out and get his RR, and to let him know a rover owner here in town had also offered to be of help later tonight if needed. I found PT was at milepost 216 headed for Pendleton with Air Amigo, a PBB'er in a 3/4 ton CTD, so I'd say PT's Excellent Adventure is coming to a close. Helluva way to waste a perfectly good weekend PT!

PTSchram 06-11-2006, 10:26 PM I realized today that I had driven two-thirds of the way home in 24 hours, on the same stretch of highway. Several times today, my rescuers asked me how far we were from somewhere and each time, I was able to tell them which mile marker was where they were asking about and described the road/exit to them. I really do think I can drive from PDX to Pendleton with my eyes closed!
I'll be heading to bed here shortly with visions of arriving home safely. Tomorrow, I get to try to find an undocumented laborer who speaks enough anglais to haggle over his labor rate and then to unload the trailer and load a truck.
The issue I have is that I need to get my tools and stock of engines and trannys back to FWA. I was not about to drive the 2500 miles home in a trail rig with no carpet, no heat shielding, a screaming front diff and a new tranny neededbecause of all the towing I'd done with it in the past.
The tech for today-overheated Rove rengines can run for short periods fo time, long enough to load the trailer, and hopefully long enough to either be sold on eBay, or if it doesn't sell, to be loaded on a car hauler and dragged to FWA where Shopboy gets to practice on another truck :flipoff2:
BTW-the guy who helped haul me home tonight is yet another Pirate. If that isn't enough justification to buy a star, I don't know what is. I have no qualms whatsoever about sending Lance his $100 each year. It's cheaper than AAA!!!

Theres another way?

Ike, you ARE 20 years younger than I am! I've lost the hearing you talk about wanting to keep.
PT (The old man of this community according to AFIRover)
RedRhinoProducts 06-12-2006, 10:34 AM Shit PT sorry to hear about the troubls.. Funny, the Red Rhino [bat] phone wasn't ringing. Oh wait, we don't answer our phone any ways.. :D
If I would have known I damn sure would have scrapped my plans for the weekend and flown out to help. The adventure would have been far greater than tearing my 95RR down to bare axle housing front and rear and refurbishing EVERYTHING. FAWK! All I wanted to do was install springs and shocks and I realized oh crap, better take of it now sort of thing...
If there is anything else I can lend a hand with you know who to call. I'll be in Miami the end of this week. Maybe I can find a Gorge'esk type guy who will drive out and burn it for you? :flipoff2:
TECH - Rebuild your axle housings and everything attached so you don't find yourself standed on the side of I95 on the way to Chicago pulling a busted DII behind a black 95RR surfing wireless Internet looking for someone on PBB to come help you. :D

After my buddy met an 80 year old woman who daily drives her haflinger that she bought new, its hard to sympathize with you and your late model luxo-ute. Try earplugs.:flipoff2:

I agree with Ike - you must be getting soft PT.
A former Professor (and good friend) of mine who is now 63yo drove a 1964 Nissan Patrol G60 every day from 1970-2001 (for those of you who don't know - these things make a series rover seem comfortable). The chassis was replaced with a Galvanised one halfway through its life, and the rusty panel sections replaced by sections of zinc plated steel riveted on (then brush painted!!!). In 2001 he finally "upgraded" to a 1985 RRC!!!
PTSchram 06-13-2006, 07:25 AM I readily admit it! I've paid those dues. After nine years of college, seven years of working in sewers, a violent (toward me) ex-wife and less than stable employment, I want to take it somewhat easy :flipoff2:
I drove the Disco to Leadville last year-on the way home, Shopgrrl said it was the last time!
Simon 06-14-2006, 03:20 PM PT, when you are back to pulling down the big bucks, be sure to think of me every time you are at the liquor store in the single malt aisle. An 18 year old Highland Park or a similarly aged bottle of Talisker should suffice. And it sure tastes better than gasoline!:flipoff2:
