Ok after some problems over this weekend I've decided to say screw a cheap beater pick up, I'm gonna get something that can tow my junk around a be a DD also.
So looking at a used 3/4 ton pick up from one of the big 3. It's gotta be Diesel and a 4 door.
I'm sorta a Dodge guy, I like the Rams with the Cummins. But I'm open to Chevy or Ford too.

Looking to spend around 20-25k on a used 98 and up truck. Most I'm coming across have high mileage, around 100k km, is that bad?

For that price range you can easily get yourself a 98 - 02 2nd Gen Dodge with a Cummins. 100K is nothing on the motor if it was maintained, although if it hasn't had the tranny built or rebuilt, consider that into the price. Unless of course it is a manual.

If that were my price range, and I wanted 4 full doors and at least a 6.5' bed, I would go with the Ford 7.3L powerstroke. Next up would be the duramax - and the only reason I do not put duramax first is because of the internal fuel injectors or whatever it is, although chevy did change the warranty to 200k miles on the engine and injectors - personally though, the chevy is my favorite all around. I wouldnt choose dodge because I dont think they had 4 full doors before '03ish, although, I could very well be wrong.

Cant go wrong with a Cummins, the auto trannys suck in any brand rig, get a manual.

theres a reason that Dodge doesnt buy the engine from Cummins and give it some fancy name and try to pass it off as their own like Ford and GM. Because its the best.

the early 98 still had the non computer engine, but all you can get is the half doors, not the full doors.

Yep, 03 for the larger doors. My 98 has the half doors.

Id rather have the half doors than the computer crap running the engine though.

I had a couple of Freightliners with the computerized Cummins, and it was total crap.

I would never have another Cummins with a computer.

with a gas engine the computers are helpful, to control the spark and precise fuel,

I love the EFI that I transplanted onto my 74 BRonco
light years better than a carb.

but with a diesel neither is required, so the electronic stuff is just something that WILL leave you walking sooner or later. (and have a huge repair bill)

Now if I could just find a 98 QC SB 12Valve 4WD 5 speed that wasn't over $12K...........
its like 99% of them were slushboxes or longbeds.
I reckon I'll end up with a longbed.

Thier all good trucks with good engines. I happen to be a CTD fan though. I have a 93' D250 5spd with well over 200K and not one problem. I also have an 05' QC 4x4 dually that I really like, but IMO it doesn't run as good as my 93, and it damn sure doesn't get the same fuel economy. So chalk another CTD vote.

GM has nice interior and nice room, Dodge has everything else. Ford sucks... there i cleared it ALL up for you.

Back in March, I picked up a used 02 ram diesel for $21,000. It had 38,000 miles on it.

I have a few basic mods and it is my every day driver, it's a great truck
