: 1990 F150 4wd with 300 CID - Opinions
I am looking at this truck that a buddy is selling, I am not too familiar with this set up. I would like to ask you Ford guy's your opinions, any that you can give me would be a great help. History, 190,000 miles, 300 straight six, 5speed tranny. Truck is in good condition as well.
Also, does this truck tow well? I know it's no Powerstroke, but any thoughts on that would be helpful...
Thanks in advance!! :smokin:
wanderer-RRORC 06-13-2006, 10:01 AM my 84 CREW CAB with a 92 4.9 that had a mild rv cam and a 5spd could tow ANYTHING..(with 4:10 gears).the heavier it got (2K trailer and a 7K 4x4 dually) the slower it took off and had to downshift for hills....but my 18ft trailer and a standard ranger (1700lb trailer and 4000lb ranger) didnt even know it was there...and thats pushin a 6700lb truck...

Thanks for the reply - that is exactly what I want to hear - it seriously does run like a champ.

most durable motor ford ever built...
second best to tow...the BEST is the 460..which I have in my 92 Crew 4x4..:grinpimp:
you'll love it..:cool2:
85f150dsel 06-13-2006, 01:06 PM yep, they are basically a diesel motor made to run on gas. All power below 2500rpm. Mine has had quite a few thrashes up to 5000 rpm and still runnin great. The 7 main bearings is what rocks.
derrick36 06-13-2006, 01:54 PM all the above is true...Plus if you ever get sick of it, a 5.0 or 5.8 will bolt in it's place.
Thanks for the info guys, I think I'm going to buy it, I will post pics - truly nice truck for the price.
Ditchrunner 06-14-2006, 02:41 PM The only downside to that truck is the tranny. It is probably an M50D light duty tranny. Other than that, I'm a big fan of the 300. I've had 3 now, and every one was a grunter. I had an 84 with T18 4spd half-ton that hauled my 8' slide-in with my heavy race trailer (2300lbs) and racer (3500lbs) all over Montana and northern Wy. w/o a hitch. Pulled the passes at 45-50, got 10 mpg towing and 16 empty at 75 (70 towing on the flats). Loved that truck. That was with 3.5 gears and 31s. Just drop into 3rd and hammer it.
Gummi Bear 06-14-2006, 07:06 PM I had a early 90's truck with a 300 and 5 speed (company truck) and it was a terriffic truck. The tranny was kind of light in the britches, and geared a little high for what I was using it for (pulling a box trailer back and forth to jobsites loaded with tools and materials)
If you ever get the chance, stick a ZF5 in the place of the light tranny, and you'll have one hell of a great setup. A lower first gear, nice synchro shifting (at least for a truck) and it's pretty well bombproof. They offered this in some 3/4 ton trucks according to what I've read over at CB.com who have nabbed their donor ZF out of one.
If I ever get the chance, I'm still wanting to put a 300 in my EB. I'll take out my 302 to do it. :D
TubaMan 06-15-2006, 09:46 AM can't beat a 300 I6 :) Actually, if you want to get technical, it's one of the motors that ford got from IHC (Yes, it's a tractor motor). I had one that i used for hauling wood, and i would load 1-2 cords on the truck and pound my way around with no problems :) The only thing i can see you having a problem with is the trans. A lot of the I6's were behind the heavy duty 4-speeds (either cast iron or aluminum). I just find it a little strange that a truck of that year has a 5-speed on it, but they may of made the change-over around that time.

franky996 06-15-2006, 04:15 PM I had a '90 long bed with the inline six. I loved the enigne, lots of torque.
adrianspeeder 06-16-2006, 04:03 PM And we have used in the past a 300 M5OD combo that pulled trailers just as easy (though not as fast) as the 02 PSD.
While the ZF5 is much tougher no doubt, I've put M5OD-R2s through serious abuse no problems.

Jrod-13 06-17-2006, 01:04 AM I had one in a 88' F-250 4x4. The motor was really, really tired, but still kept on ticking... Sadly the oil pan was so rusted, that it used more oil that gas... so i yanked the motor, and dropped in a another 300 I-6, that was siezed up(read, siezed to the point that it slid all four tires down the road, when i dumped the clutch in OD..), and was sitting in a buddies back yard for 3 years.. After finaly freeing it up, it ran like a champ.
18mpg, and the 300/ZF combo was a thing of beauty, the motor just didn't have the power for what I was intending(pulling in the 8K range)
One of my buddies dad's also has a F-150 with a 300 in it, M5OD-R2 tranny, and 3.08 gears... 160K on it, trouble free, most of them pulling a 26 foot camper.. Just forget overdrive it even there, and pulls just fin.
animator 06-17-2006, 01:43 AM I've got a 300 in my 93 F150 and don't have any complaints. It's rolling over 190k now and has no problems turning 35" tires with the stock gears--3.88?? I don't remember honestly. The one leak it has is around the oil pan, which I'll probably replace some time this year.
I plan on using it for towing/light off-roading once I get a more trail-only rig up and running, whenever that may be.
Edit to add: my one and only real *bitch* about this motor is there doesn't seem to be nearly as many aftermarket upgrades available.
NetBSD 06-17-2006, 05:11 AM heh, i got a 81 f250 with a 300 in it, was a donor truck (all i used was the box) the motor is sitting in the driveway yet, the only reason i havent used it is because of how heavy it is and ill never get the power i want, but it has 60k on it and it was sitting for 5 years in the truck, i got it home and put some gas in the carb, fired right up with no struggle, and my buddies run these motors, they are almost impossible to blow up, and when they do they work great for a paper weight :flipoff2:
Rockhales 06-18-2006, 03:56 PM I have a inj 300 in my TJ and would not trade it for 2 V8's , Dam good engine
MisterFister 06-18-2006, 06:10 PM I' ve got a regular cab '89 4X4 with the 300 and M5OD.
The M5OD went tits up 3 weeks ago, most likely a shifting fork but I'm not sure yet. No worries though, I've got a ZF5 420 waiting in the shop.
The front axle is a HP Dana44 IFS, the rear is a Ford 8.8 with an Aussie locker. IIRC, the transfer case is a BW1356.
I re-geared to 4.10s and pull this truck in local tug-a-truck comps.

The M5OD has 3 rubber plugs in the top loader that are prone to leakage. Check or replace those.
