: Reaming lug holes for tapered nuts

Guys, got a set of new hummer recenters and need to taper the lug holes. These centers are not hub-centric so I need the taper to center the wheel on the hub.

I beleive all lugnuts are 60 deg, can anyone confirm? What reamer will I need to ream the lugnuts holes on some 3/8" plate? I will be using my drill press..

I giggled like a schoolgirl when I read the title of this thread.

I would say buy the lugnuts first. OEM is usually 30 degree, but racing wheels use 45 degree.

The shallower OEM angle is easier to break free if there is corrosion, left in place for a long time, or over tightening from ig'nant shop monkeys. 45 deg has better clamping and less chance of wiggling free; wheels in a race environment are removed waaay more often than your daily driver so you don't have to worry about them corroding in place.

LOL! Guess it does sound kind of dirty, you should have read the one in the trailer section about unlubricated balls being pounded into trailer holes :)

Got the lugnuts already at home (was running H2's before switching to beadlocks), will check them with a degree indicator but seem to recall the computer at the partsstore saying something about 60deg, Hrmm inversely, 60 + 30 = 90...

If my OEM lugs are infact 30deg, what reamer would you recommend? Ive never seen one, let alone used one.

Thanks Tom,

Thanks action, thats a great link!

What do you think you will end up doing? I dont wanna drop a boatload of $$ on a 120 deg reamer...Was thinking that 118* drill bit sounds like a good idea. From what I understand, all drill bits are at 118* just need to find the right diameter..

Also planning on doing this is my drill press with a lowest speed of 280 rpm..

Yup-I am looking at the 118 degree bit myself

1 degree will not make any difference after you torque the lugnuts in and they seat. The guy who had my wheels before me never machined the taper and you can tell he was using regular acorn nuts-they almost wore the taper in with no machining-so I am not worried. The bit will natuallry center itself in the hole.

Let me know what diameter of drill bit you settle on, I will also report back.

If you go with a 118* drill-just go as big as you think you need-or measure the diameter of taper mouth on a regular one ton wheel. You can never really go too large on a drill bit (diameter)-as you adjust the depth to fit your lug nut surface area. Measure the OD of the taper on your lug nut-then go a little larger for your bit...

When I get to it this weekend-I will post a follow-up

Thanks again Action, I hope to get mine done this weekend as well.

Well, picked up a 15/16ths bit with 118* spread. Drilled a few sample holes in some 3/8" I had kicken around...As soon as the drill got to its vertical part (after the taper) I stopped,

I have pics at home and will upload them,

Anyways, the lugnut walls do make a little contact and I beleive there is enough taper to center the lug, however they are not contacting all the way down the lugnut like they should.

Like was mentioned before, overtime the lugs should "wear" the plate and create their own little taper.

Just throwing this out there, will update with pictures from home and would like your opinions,

I use a 90* countersink. Not saying that this is the right angle for all lug nuts but like mentioned the lugnut will make the wheel center what the lug nut needs the angle to be.
