: didnt need it anyway
SnowScoutII 04-17-2002, 10:10 AM So a little while back I was out wheelin in a local creek. It was mostly dry with a few nice water holes. I reved up and took off across what I thought was four or five inches of water, needless to say I had "good year maypops" on . Half way through it stalled with an enourmous banging noise. I restarted it but I knew something was wrong with the exaust. I pulled out of the water hole and checked my exhaust to find it not only disconnected but wrapped around my rear axle twice! It was the stocker anyway so with a little swearing and a broken wrench I was on my way. New set up-exhaust huggs the frame and lets out a good three feet shorter then stock.
Lesson learned
1) Stock exhaust is :rainbow:
2) cheap tools will always break when you dont want them to
3) if its broke and you can still wheel its not really broke.:flipoff2:
happy wheelin:D
Hooper 04-17-2002, 10:28 AM The routing on my exhaust is great. Just my mufflers are in the way. Big old 12" wide by 4 inch deep monsters.
How did they wrap around your axle?
Couple years ago, one of the guys in our group drove over his exhaust pipe while backing up a big rock. Only had hacksaws to cut the sucker off with. What a pain in the neck.
SnowScoutII 04-17-2002, 10:48 AM I think It disconnected from where the pipes connect causing the exhaust back past my rear tire to roll up into the body. The the pipe then bent down around the axle causing the disconnected piece to roll under and then over the axle. Lucky for me most of it was rusted and I didnt want the 2500 ticket for wheeling down there
tsm1mt 04-17-2002, 10:58 AM Heh.. I didn't need anything to cut mine off..
SUA exhaust + SOA suspension + Holy Cross = CRUNCH.
Wiped out both sides on that trip.

Makkat was heard over the CB, "Tom, would you please come back and get your muffler out of the trail so I can try the obstacle now?"

hey me and a buddy are thinking of hitting holy cross this summer, how is that trail? 1 - 4+ rating??
Klasick68 04-17-2002, 12:01 PM Yup, jus tear it off and go. Did the same thing to the hacked together rear exit duals I had on the 76, climbin a sand bank, stalled (fawkin junk holley 2bbl), rolled back and kinked both of em off. WHY kant side exit be leagal?????? It works so much better for wheelin.

Mine exit just behind my rear tires. Top of the pipe is about even with the bottom lip of the rear quarter and it is flush with the face of the quarter, but close enough that if I come off a rock, it does not get squished.
Have never even touched mine in that spot. Although, I guess, technically, that is side exit. Didn't know side exit exhaust was not legal?
Cliffy [JD] 04-17-2002, 01:57 PM A lot of factory ford truck come with side exit.
I don't think it's illegal everywhere.
Klasick68 04-17-2002, 02:13 PM Side exit is legal as long as the exit is behind the rear wheel in most states. If I put a terra top and divider in, then I could kick it out infront of the wheel, but w/ the travel top, gotta be behind the axle. I unerstand the reasoning behind the law but.....:crybaby2: :crybaby2: :crybaby2: it sucks!!!
SnowScoutII 04-18-2002, 12:15 AM having exit through the side sounds nice but what about smashing it on the rocks? I though about doing this then realized that the whole passenger side is dented or pushed in, thus a muffler like that would last ohhhh say 3.2 seconds on the trail.:flipoff2:
tsm1mt 04-18-2002, 08:37 AM I had the guys at my muffler shop get a little wild with the bender..
My duals come past the transfer case (no crushes) then turns UP behind the "step", then turns OUT between the step and the arch of the frame, then turns REAR and runs along the outside of the frame.
At the rear, it comes right up behind the rear x-member, then turns down.
It's just a little lower than the rear crossmember, and a little bit behind it.
The exhaust doesn't fully exit the body, but it's within an inch or two - and I've NEVER hit the tail-pipes on anything since then.
The setup worked great until I smashed the corner of the tub in.. now there's a bigger hole in the floor, and the soft-top makes a nice draft that sucks the exhaust back inside.
Once I patch up the tub, I think I'll be enjoying this setup again. :D

You don't want it to exit by your rockers. You are right, it won't last. But, right behind the rear tires is a good spot. Stays nice and safe.
