I found this while looking up infor on bio diesel. Has anyone tied this stuff out or know someone who has? It almost seems too good to be true.

crock of Crap,
Discussed to death on the diesel boards and I think there was a thread on here about it but it might have been in chit-chat.

I run Biodiesel in my Engine and love it. I dont make it myself, but its better for the enviroment, better lubrication, and runs about the same VS. cude oil. Little bit less in MPG, but only about 2-3.

the first diesel was made to run on peanut oil.
just about any diesel can run on straight veggie oil.

TDR
ect.
My Powerstroke gets the same mileage on B100 as on Dino diesel but the TDI beetle gets the best mileage on B50.
I make my own so it only costs me .90 a gallon:D

is labor figured into that .90?
what time does it take you to make 10 or 100 gallons or whatever..(I realize its a little time here and there and a waiting game) have you calculated it?

It takes me about 3 hrs for 40 gallons but that time is just tv time so it is free.

The other question is "where do you get your base stock to produce the biodiesel?" Someone with a brother-in-law who owns a few restaurants and is trying to get rid of 100 gallons a week of fry oil makes a difference. Around here, the restaurants are starting to get savy that they no longer have to pay to have it hauled away and are starting to charge to let you have it.

How much do they want for it?

Not really sure, I haven't been doing it myself. They had an article in the paper about a local high school kid that was running his old Mercedes wagon off the stuff as a science project. The comment was made that he went from picking it up for free when he first started to having to pay them but that he was still coming out ahead over buying diesel at the pumps.

i know a family of menanites (sp?) that does true veggie conversions on all diesel engines. They have done everything from saw mill engines, generator diesels,PSDs, CTD, and Dmax's. They get all there veggie for free from the local resturants, and filter (with a 5 micron filter) the waste oil and basically get free fuel. I am waiting for my truck to go past the warranty before i touch this alternative. They build their own kit for around $500 for any diesel truck and another $400 for labor. Its a great idea!

With the new diesel engines, it is a better choice to use Biodiesel. If you are running a Cummins 12 v or a 7.3 Powerstroke . Knock yourself out. I have run a 50% mix in my 03 Superduty and it ran fine.
The downside is the emissions are nasty since the biodiesel process removes impurities and glycerine so it is not burned. These substances age not good for your $2000 set of injectors either.

I bought about 80% of the equipment necessary to build a processor with separate wash tank, but never built it. Before I sank too much money into it, I started looking for a source of good, quality WVO. Couldn't find one... most places used hydrogenated shortening which is a solid at room temp. This yeilds a bio-diesel with a high cloud point and is not suitable for the colder months of the year. Of the places that did use a quality oil, some of them would use the oil way past the point that it should be changed which reduces the bio yield. Either that or they were under contract with a rendering service for collection of their used oil. Another problem is finding a place (or combination of places) that generates the right amount of used oil. If a resteraunt generates 50 gallons of oil per week and you can use only use 30 gallons per week, they need to find someone to take the other 20 gallons per week. Most commercial collectors require a contract and want it all or nothing.
If I could just find a reliable source of quality oil, I'd probably go ahead and assemble the processor. I've sourced out all the chemicals needed in bulk quantities and estimated the power consumption needed to make a batch and for me it comes out to $0.71/gallon.... or at least that's what it was at the time I got prices.... probably a bit higher than that now.
I've made several small "pilot" batches in the kitchen and it's not hard at all.
