Depends Dan...which TH400?

IIR my research correctly there was a jeep wagoneer that used a TH400 and a D20.(don't remember the years)
My original plan was to grab the tailshaft and put it in a GM TH 400 with the 6.2/6.5 bolted to the front.

So spend a little time on the other boards using the search.

or...
Just get back to the garage and finish that IH drivetrain.
There was nothing wrong with it!!!(just a little tired)

YUP jeep waggys and comandos had TH400 with D20 mated, but there BOP bellhousings.

The earlier Wag/Commando Th400s were BOP with an adapter plate. The later ones used in Wags and Cherokees have AMC specific housings. Most of these later units were used with Quadratrac TCs. The tailhousing has the correct 'Texas' bolt pattern, but the output shaft is WIERD. You can use these trannys with an AMC motor and a D20 (or D18 or Scout D300) if you change the output shaft. You can also use the tailhousing from these trannys on another TH400 if you also use a D20 application output shaft. AA makes a reproduction of this shaft (and a repop of the TH400/D20 tailhousing that's been reinforced). That's $$$ though.

I have found that most problems in life can be solved through divorcing.

Great choice! I am sure you will like it as much as I like mine. I installed a manual shift reprogramming kit in mine.

It may work great for shadow, but that 4l80E is a big heavy trans with a heavy internal rotating mass that soaks up a lot of power from a small engine. I don't think its the best choice behind a 5.3 in a lightweight rig. If you get the right pieces to mate a 20 to a BOP 400 you can install them in a Chev 400 so everything will bolt up......minus one bolt

Here's a link to an ad in the classifieds section. In the thread you will see pics of a TH400 from a 76 Quadratrac Wag. The tranny is bolted directly to the AMC V8 (no adapter). There's also a pic of a D18 TC with a TH400/D20 adapter and output shaft attached. Those are the parts needed for attaching a D18, D20, or SCOUT D300 to any 4WD TH400.

the dana 20 to jeep 400 uses a short 2wd trans ouput shaft, and the adapter bolts on and has a splined sleeve that slides over the output shaft, with a gear on it for the dana 20. so all you need is a 2wd shortshaft th400 for a chevy, and slide the adapter on and bolt on your d20. fairly easy swap. the adapters come up on ebay alot.

I'm running this setup right now. I took the guts from a waggy 400 and stuffed them in a chavy case and used the adapter and the 20 from the waggy. Then I bolted a 350 to the 400. Don't waste your time and money keeping the 20. Just run full chevy and put a 208 or a 203*205 doubler behind it. The 20 is a good case but definatly not worth a bunch of work to try and save.
