all I need is some feedback on weather or not I should pick it up.
I have wanted a 55 for years now. I had a chance to buy one several years
ago and have been kicking myself ever since. Purpose of the 55 would be
a family camper/trail rig. I would all the refinements such as power
steering and
disc brakes. I have a mig welder and plasma cutter at my disposal.
So rust removal shouldn't be too hard, but how much rust is too much.

Here is the details from the ad

1970 FJ55

Red and White. Three speed on the column, 4wd works, no power steering.
Mostly stock by the looks of it, no mods. I was driving it around town about
6 months ago before I pulled the exhaust manifold. I've rebuilt the
carburetor, put in a new distributor, cleaned out the fuel pump, put in a
new fuel filter. This truck needs work. I have a new valve cover gasket for
it. It currrently needs a new exhaust manifold and heat riser to get it
running.
It has through rust in the fenders, corners of doors and under the doors.
There is also rust on the back around the tailgate hinge. Tailgate works,
rear window works (goes up and down). The doors work, the glass is all good,
and the electrical seems to be in working order. It's missing a right side
mirror, headliner and the antenna is broken (P.O. kept the stock radio, so
there is just a hole there).

what do you guys think?
it is local and all I would have to do is tow it home

Sounds like your typical FJ55 peice of junk, rusted out and hammered! But for $500 you can hardly go wrong. I'd consider it, but beware that it may need alot more work than you think.

Hey, you still interested in that PTO I have for your 62? I sent you an email but didn't get a reply. I'm willing to meet you half way (around Umatilla), I won't be driving to Seattle this summer, I'm flying. Let me know, if not I'm going to put it up for sale again.

In regard to your actual post, 55's are cool, go for it.

I too was interested in this cruiser. However the woman who owns it has been doing work on it and it sounds like she is well, not 'mechanically inclined' to put it nicely. I bought my 84 toyota pu from a guy who wasn't 'mechanically inclined.' he had done a lot of electrical work but didn't own a soldering gun:confused: . this was fine for him cause he only used it on the street. When I took it off road I started looking for shorts more than driving it. Just a heads up, you might be doing a lot of work.
