I can still put my soft top on, along with the doors, and I often drive it, on trips of several hundred miles up to Tahoe or out to Monterey, or wherever???.

Seriously Jeff, how close is your rig to being "street legal".

either you are just plain lucky, or the cops are afraid of you :vader:

Really its only missing fender flares to make it legal nearly anywhere.
However when I was living in Vegas and Reno,.....well they really dont care what you drive there.
I havent even been pulled over though since Ive been here in Sacto (Roseville, since last June).
I will probably make some clamp on fender flares so that Kathy can drive it around this summer.

Funny. I've got all sorts of mods done and planned, but one requirement stays in force - the doors have to seal, and the top has to go on. All else is fair game. :D

There's plenty I could (and have) been busted for, but I don't care - I build it to play on the trails. The fact I have to use it as a daily driver and I don't have a tow rig are secondary. :blender:

With the exception of the tires sticking out too far (3 fix it tickets so far) it still passes smog and is (mostly) street legal. As far as I'm aware, CA doesn't have a lift limitation.

Mine is still legal. I drive it a couple of times a week around town. Of course I probably need mud flaps, but I have not yet gotten my fix it ticket yet.:D

We're lucky around here...
As long as you have a legit license plate when tooling around, all is well...
No windshield, flairs, doors, hood, or what ever needed :p
And usually you don't even need tags if you appear to be heading to a local off-road destination.
It's a Good Thing ... :smokin:

No third tail light, no mirrors when the doors are off (whenever it's not raining), too loud, probably wouldn't pass smog because i can smell it when I drive, tires stick about an inch out of fenders, no front licence plate.

I live in Texas so the cops aren't very bad about trucks. I've only been pulled over a few times, once was because it was 3am and the front licence plate was the only thing he could get me for, just a warning. The only ticket I ever got was doing a donut on the beach 30 miles down the South Padre Island National seashore, past a sign that says "4whee drive required" the cop said that it was just like a road so anything could be ticketed that could be ticketed on the road. The bastard got me for wreckless driving. :rainbow:

The INSIDE of my 38's are damn near on the OUTSIDE of my rear fenders. Fronts even worse. I have removable extended flairs on it now (zip tied on) that come off as soon as I even smell dirt. Also have flaps that are shove in and hitch pin. I leave em in the back though. I HATE the way they look.

So far, on ticket. In Napa driving through with no flares. I have'nt got harrassed yet in Sac though.

Mine has to stay street "legal". Its the only vehicle I own. Although flatfendered in the front, and no flares in the rear aint exactly "legal" I don't care though.

I think everything is street legal in FL:D

You should see some of the chit people drive around; sand rails, 44's on Fords with about 30" lift, front lift blocks (), all kinds of junk.

I really think they don't care at all.

When I took my Jeep to get the registered/tags all they did was check the VIN# and walk away. Could've cared less about what it looked like or ran like.

IN was the the same way:D

Well, this is an issue that we wrestle with all the time.

First of all, we have sub divided it into 2 definitions:

a) Street Legal meaning you can daily drive it without any problems (drives nice on the street and is legal)

and

b) Street Legal meaning you can get from your driveway to a trail without getting a ticket.

They are two different things.

And the one thing which is hard to get around in terms of (b), around here, is flares. We can get through the vehicle inspection, blah blah blah, and most cops don't care about the flares, but if you really don't want a ticket, your flares have to come within a couple of inches of the outside of your tires.

This is causing much 'knashing of teeth' with me personally, because I want to high hood mine so I can get 38.5 SXs on without any more lift, but I can't figure out how to get flares on to the fiberglass hood. Not quite sure if flat fendering it will give me enough room, and even if it does, I still have the problem of attaching flares.

UGH!

Yep, I'd agree with that.. of course there's no state inspection down here either... :D

Well, we try... here in PA there are inspections.... to pass inspection, our bumper must be 30" at the lowest point, but we can put smaller tires on for the inpsection. Your tires shouldn't extend out of the flares, we try to at least be close....

We have a truck & trailer, but still like to be able to drive a jeep around if we like...

mine's as legal as a porn star on her 18th birthday.
they check height to the bottom of the door in NJ.
I should be fine, but I might have to check my tire air pressure before going up to the tape measure :-)

and NJ sucks, my Jeep toes the line of legal, and it's a barbie Jeep on the POR bell curve

Might wanna check on that ;) I think its something like 25 or 26 inches frame heighth from the ground :(

I am nowhere close to legal. Too much lift, WAYYYYYYYY too wide, no mirrors, broken windshield, blah blah blah

Helps to have it registered in a state that isn't as strict. As long as you don't get pulled over for other crap, you can get away with it for quite a long time. I feel sorry for those registered in California. Must be a nightmare building a rig and having to worry about that too.

Definately, this is my daily driver. Who cares any way, here in Bama, I think you just have to have a windshield and lights to be "street legal" ;)

Yup, same here. I'll be finished with school next year and will be buying a second vehicle, so the jeep will get wider axles and beadlocks.

Speaking of tires sticking out too far and mud flaps I had a little run in with a copper the other day. I was drving by a road construction in progress and the workers must have dropped some asphalt on the road. well the swampers picked it right up and threw the asphalt pieces EVERYWHERE. Just my luck one on the pieces dinged the side of a cop car. Got a fix it ticket but im too f'n lazy :flipoff2:

Around here, at least this part of the state, the cops are real strict. Two of my wheeling buds have been busted.
I was chased once but I took a qwick detour off-road.
Hey, I didn't need him to tell me my tires where sticking out past my flare,....... I KNEW THAT!
I'll have to rebuild the fenders (tube type) to cover the 14.50's.

when i said nope i meant it will not pass a legal state inspection, mostly due to the lack of cats and a newer tbi engine with no smog pump. other than that they dont care that it is 7'7" wide and 7' tall has no flares, no front or rear fenders and is pretty loud. i do drive it around town and to work once in a while, but i drive according to the rules as not to attract to much attention, i also am a law enforcement officer, but if i act like and asshole that means nothing. my inspection has run out and its gonna be hard to find one, i may go to a j yard and scrape one out of a wrecked cars window

in Louisiana, almost everything on the road is ilegal, the only lift laws are that your tires cant stick out of the flares more than one inch, and you head lights can be higher that 45 inches from ground to center, cops dont really care about all that stuff, but if u dont happen to get stopped around here and the cop in in a bad mood, watch out, a friend of mine got seven tickets at once for a few simple things wrong with his YJ, tires, rear view mirrors, muffler, etc. any thing excpet factory is realy illegal but u rarely get stopped for it
