: Uhhh, just look at this pic of GM 12-bolt carrier. Pinion damage?

It appears to me that the pinion must have slid down and cut up the carrier. There is only minor wear to the pinion so if it did have a problem it must have been replaced.

Or is this factory and I am retarded?

It's possible the the pinion was loose and made the marks on the carrier. As long as the pinion preload is good, and the backlash is with in spec, I'd run it. Is there a lot of freeplay in the pinion?

happens when the gear is/gets to deep, common and you had better pull the carier to get a real good look at the pinion.

dang. Alright will do. I'll pull it tommorow. there is about .030 gap beetwen the teeth but I was just planning on tightening the pinion. I was going to replace pinion seal anyway. The axle has definatly been fixed because it wont go far enough to get anywhere near the carrier now. We'll see. I'll get some pics tommorow after work.

No, those are factory markings, it used to be that GM had the Canadians making them and that is what they looked like.:flipoff2:

ok, that makes more sense. seemed like more damage than one pinion could do.

looks like might had a pinion bearing go bad al least once. I would still run it. Got one in my dd that looks worst than this one

Well we can't blame the canadians for this one. It was definatly a loose nut. The loose nut caused the pinion shim to wear way down and cause a bunch of backlash. anyway, everything else is fine. Now just have to find a suitable shim.

Uhh, are you guys serious? That is what happens when you use a crush sleeve in a high power app. Yes it rubs, but, only when your driving it.:flipoff2:

No real harm either way. Run it!:smokin: But only after you retighten the pinion nut.

Best of luck,
Easy Rick.

it was behind a 250 6cylinder. not to high power of an app. i think the nut just came loose.

But yea, everything looks to be ok. I'm just gonnna reshim and bolt it in.

pinion nut came loose or the crush sleeve crushed
