: Weekend report 6/17-6/18
binderbound 06-19-2006, 02:48 AM I wheeled. Took the old man on the run since it was fathers day. He test drove a brand new cab top 74 scout II in 1974. Said he didnt think it would get around in the woods good enough so he bought a 74 CJ-5 instead. All day he said he wished he had bought the scout instead:D

couldnt wipe the grin off his face all day

How say you?
Bill usn-1 06-19-2006, 04:00 AM I logged more data for my 8746 chip....
Then worked on my new foreign car.....
It will almost drive under the scout!
77 mini:D
The rockers look good Dan.
Why do you go down the hills backwards???
When you gonna start climbing something.
Mechanos 06-19-2006, 08:05 AM Paid too much for a 14b for the Scout and checked out some serious horsepower (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=483361) friday night at the antique tractor & engine show.
Decided my junk yard waggy forward shackle front springs were not going to cut it. I wanted to do a RS and go with some HD 52" springs. But after mocking them up, they were not going to be what I wanted either:shaking: Broke down and bought some new 44044 and started setting them up for a RS setup. To get my caster set a 5 degrees I was going to need some big shims. I had some 6 degree and 10 degree shims, but needed something around 8, so I cut an overload leaf for the extra 2 dergrees. This should also help with spring wrap too. I bought these Rodman drill bits years ago and they cut spring steel like butter.
Don't look at that tie rod, it's temp until I can get new one.

Diesel Smoke 06-19-2006, 11:09 AM Saturday headed over the the parents house to finish up a few little things on my pickup and Rock Scout.
Had them both rolling by Mid-afternoon.
http://www.binderbulletin.org/photopost/data/500/339DSCF0293-med.JPG
The pickup was fairly easy, I just had to install a new throttle cable and make a bracket. The angle at which the old cable hit the carb linkage was terrible, so I made a bracket to make things more linear. Worked really well.
Then Dad and I re-tapped the holes in the crawlers steering box and I got that installed. I tightened up the exhaust pipe and it was ready to run. It fired over with just two cranks, FI is great!!
Here's the rebuilt box waiting for lines. Even with the rebuild the truck seems to steer a bit better.

tucked under the fender.
http://www.binderbulletin.org/photopost/data/501/339DSCF0296.JPG
I need to get over this week sometime and spend sometime cleaning up the crawler, it's still has mud packed into places and some cats had been sleeping in the seats, so they are covered with hair. Overall it's ready to roll!

SSGTWC 06-19-2006, 12:50 PM Spent the weekend with my buds down in Mahattan.
Good times!!
scout254 06-19-2006, 01:08 PM Went weeling Sunday.......even after leaving two 100wt lights ON over night and killing both batteries. Yup should have taken those soft light covers off, I didn't know that I bumped the damn switch....:flipoff2:
Dirt Boy 06-19-2006, 05:32 PM Went wheelin' with the local off road club. Had to catch a ride as I am still having trouble getting the scout running. Fun run, but all Jeeps:(
One sweet Scrambler though.
Harvester of Sorrow 06-19-2006, 05:44 PM Friday night I went and watched a band I am going to try out for this Weds...Then got a hand job from the girl I took with me...:smoking:
Saturday went to a US Forest Service meeting regarding Motorized Trail Use Plan...met up with BenW and his wife...Then after getting home I took too long of a nap and slept till 8:30pm...:shaking: ended up staying up till 4:30am because of it...
Sunday...no boys...:( So I drank and played music...in no particular order...
Next month I will be able to work on the Scout again because I will have some scratch...
I just bagged 16 dollars in quarters for gas money....
Docfranco 06-19-2006, 06:20 PM Still finishing up details from the 1 ton swap. Put new brake lines on and worked on the power steering. still waiting on front DS and hummer inserts & tires. need to finish onboard air for an ARB and big ass air horn.
I am sick & tired of stupid people not paying attention driving while on the phone or some stupid shit and my semi loud electric horns do not even faze them. I need some grover train horns.....
<rant off>:flipoff2:
Mechanos 06-19-2006, 07:12 PM I have a pair of 24" Grovers... one of them even has IHC stamped on it. But they're going on the tow rig.... no need for twin air horns on a trail rig.
Brandon 06-19-2006, 08:50 PM waiting for my cages from Snoopy and saving pennies for my tcase, dats bout it :(
Non scout related I did the downieville downhill on my bike, that was a blast

budget76 06-19-2006, 11:02 PM Went weeling Sunday.......even after leaving two 100wt lights ON over night and killing both batteries. Yup should have taken those soft light covers off, I didn't know that I bumped the damn switch....:flipoff2:
so, those covers got a little crispy huh?
This weekend, realized why my front brakes refused to bleed, i put new drums on the rear and never tightned them:laughing: yes, I am a dumbass:p also, pulled a 345 outta a parts truck for my dads scout, and should be pulling the old motor out soon. The truck is only buried so bad it'll take an hour to be able to turn it around:rolleyes:
binderbasher 06-20-2006, 02:14 PM Went camping up by antelope lake, wheeled, and drank . Sunday got my 68 scout running. It has a 304, unknown granny 4spd, and twin stick dana 20. It will be my daily driver soon.
Snoopy 06-20-2006, 04:22 PM Nothing ~ Rusty got the exhaust in but that wasn't the weekend.
uglyscout 06-20-2006, 05:24 PM Spent the weekend in Sacremento and the Bay Area. DAMN It was HOT down there!!!
Spent some time at the gun range with my gun nut lil' brother. Shot more 'big' guns than I'd ever seen. .50 BMG, .50 Desert Eagle, S&W .500, .45-70.... My arm/hand still hurts. I can only imagine our ammo bill...
Drove my lil' brothers Scout around the block - tried to help him ID a problem but wasn't much help with very limited tools and time.
Ate too much... Drove too much. Good times, good times...

Chris,
Don't get too open, those .50 caliber aren't legal in the great state of California.
Glad to have a good time!

Hey - your the one that used my real name!! CARL!
As I understand it they are all legal as of about 1.5 years ago. He purchased it and had it delivered through the proper channels after the 'assualt weapons ban' expired and before the newest Cali. law against .50 cal items it is registered with the state I'm sure.

JoshC 06-22-2006, 07:32 PM Thanks Mike! It was an OUTSTANDING father's day weekend, but getting up at 3am and heading to Chicago to spend day long meetings cooped up in a conference room watching small spots of poison oak pop up on my arms SUKED!
I can't wait to get home. I gotta call Jeff to so i can order some new motor mounts because the bolt head sheered right off on my old one. I figgure better to replace them both.
I was actually really happy and very impressed with my after-market mounts from Anything Scout. I really abuse my rig and they have lasted me... I want to say 5 or 6 years? I REALLY ABUSE MY RIG. Broken front 60 inner, front 20 output, tore off motor mount bracket, etc.
I really want to try these bad boys next... I'll let you know in 5 or 6 years if they are still taking good care of me. :flipoff2:

The new 42's really hurt me gear ratio wise. I'll have to do something about that this winter during my down time, but I'll bump the idle for now and get to all the wheelin I can!

Josh,
What ratio are you running in your axles? Do you have the low gearset for the D20 or just the stock 2:1?
Rock Tractor 06-22-2006, 09:41 PM Well, I'm runnin the RPT tranny mounts now and my shifters don't hit my passengers anymore:laughing: http://beer.thisdysfunctional.org/forum//images/smilies/rockstar.gif

LOL... 4.56? diffs and stock t-case. Trans in a t-19 wide box and that's all I have going for me.
NEEEEEED GEARS!

I did strip one tranny mount, so I plan on drilling and tapping the mounts to whatever the next size up is. If Jeff thinks those can handle a drill bit hoggin em out a little I might take one of them too.

NEEEEEED GEARS!
So would you say you'd have plenty enough gear if you had a 4:1 t-case? Or do you think you'd like even more gear than that?
JoshC 06-23-2006, 07:25 AM So would you say you'd have plenty enough gear if you had a 4:1 t-case? Or do you think you'd like even more gear than that?
It will be better gearing for me than I've had for the last couple years, so I'm sure I'll be very happy. I've never had deep gears though so I have nothing to compare. I do know that if I had a gead'd doubler, I'd have much more control or accuracy when really having to work an obstacle.
Mechanos 06-23-2006, 09:20 AM Trying to get a feel for which direction I want to go with the fat-ass/D60F swap. Right now I have 4.88's, stock 300 and t-19 wide. That puts me at 81:1 and I have 36" tires. When I do the swap, I'll have the t-19 wide, 4:1 t-case gears and if I went with 4.56's in the axles, I'd have 115:1. I'm planning on running 42" tires on the 1-ton axles.
Now before everyone start jumping in with "get the lowest possible gears you can" canned answer, consider this:
With my current setup (as I ran the 'con with last year) almost all my crawling was done in 2nd gear. I only had to drop to 1st a couple times when I either needed to go real slow or needed increase throttle control on the more technical stuff. If needed to scoot along on a reasonable flat smooth portion I would 3rd and even 4th. All this was in low range. If I put the 4:1's now without changing anything, I'd probably do most crawling in 3rd with 2nd and 1st available for more speed and/or throttle control, but if I need to scoot along, 4th probably wouldn't quite cut it and I'd end up shifting in and out of low range all the time.
So, I'm kind of thinking of going with 4.56's or 4.88's, 4:1 t-case and 42's. The 14b I bought already has 4.56's in it, so that's one less thing to have to buy/worry about. Hmmmmmmmmm

MMMmmmmmm....42's...looks fucking tight dude...
RustoleumWhite 06-23-2006, 09:32 AM I'm sure I've told you before... with 4.10, 33's, t-19 wide and 4:1's I still pain for more gear. Maybe its just a difference in wheeling style. Who knows but I actually spend a lot of time in 1st. A lot of the time is spend in 2nd, but its surprising how much time I find myself in 1st. Technical tree driving here in the PNW, with a barge of a Scout might be part of it, no throttle, just idle through things. I grab 2nd for longer, easier stretches, and sometime even 3rd for when I need to "pop it" :D.
If/when I get the crawler box and new 39's, I will probably spend most of the time in 3rd and 2nd for the "low", reserving a 1st for those REAL technical spots.... hence the reason I have decided to stick with the stock gears in the D300 for now (2.6 x 2.7 = 7:1 :D). I crunched some numbers last night and with 5:13's I was at 223:1 or so in 1st :D.... just about right with 40" tires. Yet I can still cruise at 65-70ish at my current 3K should I want/need to.
reuben 06-23-2006, 04:07 PM I think my crawl ratio is around 36:1 or so, and that is on foedeefoes

YES!!!!!...... they do!!!!
This pic goes to the top of favorites!!!!!
Urban Wheeler 06-24-2006, 10:38 AM Man i am jealous of you guys that get to actually wheel. I spend all week in the 18 wheeler and when I get home I am too pooped to pop. Sometimes it is worth it, 2400 miles this week at $.21 cpm plus $.12 cpm per diem plus $240 for extra stops and layover, I figure a good $800 after taxes.
