I'm doing a disk brake conversion and this guy from a used parts store sold me spindles, backing plates and caliper from a 1980 Blazer. He assured me that the 80's can be substituted to the 77 and older models.

The axle bearings (SKF B2110) and the outer bearings (SKF BR 35) are the same. The inner bearings are different (SKF LM104949, instead of SKF BR37). The inside dia. of the inner bearing is 2 in., instead of 2.5 in, while the corresponding outside dia of 80 spindle is also 2 inches.

Is this really possible to use an 80 spindles, backing plate and caliper? If this works, then we just expanded our search for used parts.

I don't think they will work.I tried this on a 74 EB housing with parts from a 79 blazer and the spacing was wrong. I don't remember exactly where but the caliper didn't line up right and hit the knuckle. This was 3 or 4 years ago so I'm a little sketchy on the details. we ended up using parts froma 74 chevy 44. 73-77 blazer should work but not 78-up

I used 76 Blazer parts and they worked ok ! Had to grind my stock 74 Bronco drum brake knuckles quite a bit , but it won't hurt
it . Well worth the effort and time to track down the parts . Just get to know some folks in a salvage , junk , wrecking yard . Pretty
easy swap and the bearings are the same for that year Chebby
as well as the Bronco . Good luck :flipoff2:

What about a 1980 backing plate, is it the same as the 77 and older?

The backing plates will work. The spindles will not work with the common EB swap using ford hubs and rotors. You can use the 80 chevy hubs and rotors and just redrill them to 5 on 5.5 or there is a dodge hub that will work and is already 5 on 5.5 but it changes your track width. Find the earlier spindles if you can.

Thanks for the help.

Returned the 80 spindle, but I got a lot of flack from the used parts shop. He will only replaced it with old beat up older spindles. He said they will work.

No choice, the bearings all fit on the spindle and a little loose. Maybe I could roughened up the spindle surface where the bearings seats so that bearings do not turn on the spindle.

Hope everything works.:p

You don't want the bearings to fit loose. How about using the the all the used parts (backing plates, rotors, calipers) but purchase new spindles and bearings. That way everything fits like it should and no worrys about loose fitting bearings. That's what I did.
