First of all, the weld that connects the C to the tube does not have much penetration, so you do not need to gouge into the tube.
When I just turn the C, I grind all the way around. Then I take a sledge & hammer it to rotate the C on the tube, not try and pound it off. You will see metal deform when you are close. Once it starts to rotate, you can then pound the C off the axle (I only move the C ~1/8" away from the original seam. DO NOT REMOVE C!)
It takes me ~10 minutes to do one side. Have fun.

I had to grind into the knuckle a bit but it wasn't too bad. I sprayed some penetrating fluid into it from the opposite side (the wheel side) because I was told it'd help to make the seam more visible when I finally go through the weld. I pounded mine to the correct caster using a 2lb baby sledge. Once it starts to move, it gets easier after that. I welded up an axle holder in which I clamped the housing in place. Makes it easier to concentrate on pounding the knuckle plus you don't waste any energy by letting the housing move around.
