: TJ dana 30 lock-right help !!
adam90xj 06-20-2006, 07:20 PM I installed a lock-right into a dana 30 on a TJ for a friend yesterday evening. I've done 6 of them before so it didn't take long. She drove it home fine, and around town this morning running errands. She was headed to work this afternoon and the darn thing won't unlock while turning to the right. Turns left just fine with only some clicking..... but refuses to unlock turning right. I put it up on a jack and spun the wheels. left front spins backwards fine, but locks spining forward. The right fron spins forward freely but not backwards...... I took the cover off and the srings/pins and everything looks fine.
Does any one have ANY suggestions ????
I'm going to call powertrax tomarrow.... but figured u guys could help now !
Thanks
Adam
Curly 06-20-2006, 09:29 PM Just a thought. Hubs on this TJ?
NOTICE REGARDING FRONT AXLE APPLICATIONS:
The Powertrax Lock-Right Locker works well on the front axle of 4-wheel drive vehicles provided a couple
of important guidelines are followed. The Lock-Right Locker should be used only on vehicles
equipped with locking hubs on the front axle or with front axle disconnect. In addition, the vehicle must not be
equipped with full time 4-wheel drive. Vehicles equipped with a Lock-Right Locker on the front
axle should not be operated on the highway with the front hubs locked and 4-wheel drive engaged. Following
these guidelines will ensure very on-road driveability while still providing maximum off-road traction.

Just a thought. People have been putting auto lockers in the front of vehicles with no hubs for MANY years. Since you dont know, lockers that are not recieving power do not function as a locker.
Unless you have some knowledge of lock rights go search and read a little.
Curly 06-20-2006, 10:11 PM Search you say? After searching the "Manufactures website" I see that the lockright was not intended to be used in his application and/or driving conditions. I'm sorry you seem upset by this just thought maybe he missed the sheet marked "instructions".:shaking: I've installed a couple and have run a lockright for many trouble free years but then again I have hubs as recommended by the Manufacture. Sorry I couldn't help more.:)
limejeeeep 06-21-2006, 02:33 AM i run a lockright everyday in my 04LJ.not a problem.of corse if i engage 4wd on a hard surface its start to bind up
adam90xj 06-21-2006, 03:22 AM I have a lock-right in a Dana 30 on my xj, no problems. In fact I know of 8 people in my club that run lock rights in dana 30's without hubs with no problems. Now do you have any suggestions as to why it would stay locked turning one direction and not the other??
Thanks
Adam

Thats right, because everything on this board is used by its manufacturers recommendations. I bet Dana advised putting one ton axles in wranglers also.
He is asking for help on his lock right. He gave vehicle description to help the diagnosis. You are stating the obvious and not helping.
Curly 06-21-2006, 12:04 PM As I stated before: I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help but luckily he is now armed with all of your advice.:flipoff2:
adam90xj 06-21-2006, 12:55 PM Well, I spoke with Jeff at powertrax today.... He suggested using some syn. gear oil to help out. I'll try it but I have my doubts. Has anyone noticed a difference between regular and syn. gear lube with a lock-right?

limejeeeep 06-21-2006, 03:54 PM did you use alot of assembly lube that is something i did here of ,that would cause that problem
chadjeep 06-21-2006, 09:55 PM no genious on lockrights but I figure any advice can help. I have heard of springs breaking, if one or both on one side broke that might cause that one side to stay locked. You have probably already checked the lockright itself I am just throwing things up. I will search around. Good luck.
adam90xj 06-22-2006, 10:16 AM Didn't use any assm. Lube. That could have something to do with it. But then again I would think that it would have done it when it was first installed.
Springs, pins, (installed a new richmond cross pin) looks fine.
I'm putting syn. in there today, I'll report back with updates.
Thanks
Adam
adam90xj 06-22-2006, 07:35 PM Took the loker out and figured out that this application needed to reuse the side gear shim/washers. I could see that the springs were holding the pins right at the edge of the window.....so the pins could move just a little and be jammed on the edge of the window. I put the shims back in and it works fine. You'd think that the tech at powertrax would have at least asked wether I installed the shims. The install manual isn't clear as to what applications need them and which ones don't.
hope this might help someone else in the future.
