So last summer I installed a Dana 44 form a 79 traveler. I was told that these have heavy'er duty components on them. Is this true?
I have jumped my scout at least 12 times in a row on one occasion and came out nary a scratch nor broken axle. I know 44 are tough but when you have all your fellow fourwheelers with mouths gaping it tends to make me think I might be pushing it a little hehe:D

.Oh .. and there is nothing special about the scout 44 its just as crappy as any other. Undoubtedly someone will post a pic of a broken front axle soon

Nope not HD, a Traveler front should be the same as a Scout, now a 44 from a 3/4 Ton truck of T-all is HD, with 1/2" tubes and more webbing on the pumpkin.

Heavier duty than WHAT? The 1/2T Chevy '44 housing I broke (see above) in two was a heavier duty setup than any Scout '44 I've seen. The Chevy housing has .5" thick axle tubes.. which might be why the center section broke instead of the tubes bending. :D

I jumped my untrussed front end for three years. Problem was, each time it held up, I thought I'd try a little higher/farther/faster the next time.. until I found out how much abuse it'll really take.

If you really want to jump it, truss it.

I just FINALLY got my POS moving under it's own power again.. pulled it into the shop last night. First time I've driven it since August.

Aaaaaahh

There’s that pic… I love seeing it every time. :D

Oh yeah.. if you do a good job of trussing then the Knuckle starts breaking off (that can make for an exciting landing)

SnoScout, Keep jumping…… but have your next axle ready to go.. You’ll probably need it!.... eventually:D

Hmmm.. NOW you tell me. :)

Now that I think of it, I've seen some front ends running around here with triangular gussets in the corners between the end-yoke and tube to help hold the knuckle in place.

Should've added more weight to the front end before I painted it and installed it.

Dang.

Oh well.

New ball-joints and axle U-joints this season, too. That should help keep it together..

:D

(Live pics!)
Gotta push the front clip back about 4" and put new hood-pins in the firewall, since I ripped 'em out and bent the hinges. :D

Installed the new Roggy Bilsteins last night... almost ready for Memorial Day.

Nothing particularly special.

Just referencing the Bilstein 5100 shocks I bought from Bob Roggy when he had a sale a few months back.

14.75" travel

And you ain't shittin' either, because it happened to me and my friends. Stuart's tough-truck racer came off a big-ass jump and spit the knuckle off the passenger side. We had broken a housing before, so he trussed this front end, but didn't tie the knuckles into the truss. Sure enough, it spit the knuckle right off, and took out the axle shaft, brake line, and tie rod with it.

WELD THE KNUCKLES TO THE TRUSS AND TO THE TUBE!!!!
