Unreal guys thats exactly what i have been looking at parked near one of the shops i deliver to. It has cherokee badges on it is that normal? Is a wagoneer just another name for them?

Hey Ruff,

I have always wondered that too!

So a wagoneer is a cherokee.

allright kids. a wagoneer is a 4 door. a cheroke in a FSJ is a 2 door and is typically a wide trac, but not always. there were a very few 2 door cherokes made with narrow trac axles. these NT cheros and 4 door wags didi not have flairs. in 84 or 85 after the intro of the xj ,downsize chero,a small, downsize xj wagoneer was made.it was supposed to be a top of the line, plush, model, with leatehr interior and lots of bells and whistles. this year the FSJ became a grand wagoneer. as such it is important to specify grand wagoneer in 85 if your buying parts for one of those. if the dumb ass at the 'Zone looks up 85 wagoneer youre going to get xj parts.

couple other tidbits for parts wag searching:
-pre 1980 had a passneger side drop for frnt axle, and either a slightly offset rear(for d20)or a real offset rear(for quadra trac)
-80 and newer had a driver side drop and a new process aluminum xfer of some sort.rear axle is centered, wich is a 1 piece axled amc 20 in 80 to 86,and a 44 from 87 to 91.
-wide trac axles are about 6 inches wider than the narrow tracs. WT axles are availble on 80-84 chero chief, but are pretty rare
-74-79 will be a disc brake 44 front. earlier will be drum brake, and possibly closed knuckle.older(pre70 or so)will get you a close knuckle, drum brake d30 or d27,5 lugs, and a rear 44 with course splined,2 piece axles :barf:
-j10/20 rear axles are alittle wider, and have different perch locations.front is same as a WT wag/chero front.rear in a j10 is a 44 or amc 20,dep on year. j20 is a d60-slightly offset in the pre 80,cnetered in post 80.most are 8 lug, cept for some early ones that were 5 lug with semi-floating axleshafts.

further questions bout FSJs? :rasta:

Lesson number 2 - he's in austrailia, and cars don't always have the same name in other countries. Ever wonder why the Nova didn't sell in mexico?

Also, the US years of production and export do not always corspond to the other countries.

But, in general, a Cherokee is a 2 door Wagoneer

My cherokee is a 4-door??. . I have only seen 2 or 3 other 4-door cherokees in Pakistan so far.. All others are wagoneers...

Just thought I'd offer a bit of info. Kaiser built a 2 door wagoneer in the 60's. In the early 70's the Cherokee came out as an option, it was a 4 door. You can tell the difference between them by the tail lights. The 2 door Cherokee came out a little later, then Wide Track. Somewhere in there (i'm not to sure when) the Cherokee became 2 door and the Wagoneer became the 4 door, but they still built 4 door Cherokee's. They also changed the Wagoneer tail lights to the Cherokee style, so later Wagoneers have the vertical light and the early ones have the wrap around. Of course if you know about jeeps, you know that they never could make up their mind. :)

A buddy of mine had an '80 4 dr. Cherokee; the story I heard was that in the later years the Cherokee became the entry level strip down model, and the Wagoneer was the nicer one, which would make sense, since my bud's '80 had a 258 and a manual trans.

Ditto what Pete said. There are lots of 4-door FSJ Cherokee's. I have a '79.

when i first responded,i hadnt noticed that the poster was in austrailia,i was mianly refering to what ive seen and gathered about US models, and wasnt really thinking too much about the 60s or the 80s fsjs. the 74-79 era is by far the most common, you dont see quite as many older or newer.

i had forgotten that i myself had a 81 parts rig that was a 4 door cherokee :emb4: i have never seen a 74-79 4 door cherokee, and i have never seen a 84 or newer 2 door grand wagoneer. for whatever that info is worth, anyway.

didnt think most of you guys really gave a rats ass about FSJ specifics, other than what parts you can use off of em in other rigs,so i humbly apologize if the vagueness of my first answer caused any cofusion.
