I just picked up a cj-5 body and frame and it came with a set of axles, front is a 8 lug 10bolt and I think the rear is out of a 84-91 3/4-ton Suburban it is a 8 lug and has the more round shape of the small corporate 14bolt with the 9.5inch ring gear. I did a search and didn't come up with much on the smaller 14 bolt. All the info seems to be on the bigger 14bolt. If any one can help me out I would appreciate it. Oh, both axles are supposed to have 4.56's and a detroit in the front and limited slip in the rear. They have 35x12.50-16.5 tires on them now and I want to set this vehicle up for trail only.
Question: What used the 8 lug 10 bolt front end, and is this a terrible axle to have?
Are these axles going to give me a ton of head aches later down the road?

the 10bolt front is in the same strength catagory as a d44. the sf 14bolt like you have is actually not a bad rear. it gets a bad wrap bacause it is a c-clip axle and it isn't as strong as the ff 14bolt. i don't think there are many lockers made for it but it does have larger shafts then a d44 or ford 9". personally i'd swap it for a ff 14bolt but if you have it and want to run it weld that sucker up and see what she'll take.

That sounds like a good idea. I think I am gonna make that happen. Fawk it, if it breaks I got a 9inch rear with 5.13's and a detroit laying around and I am sure I can find a front axle to go along with it. I think I will do that and see if it breaks. Thanks

don't quote me on this, but I do believe that the new eaton electric locker is made for that smaller 14 bolt because (what I heard) is that the smaller diff is used in the hummers?!
anyone know if this is wrong?

the SF 14 bolt is a 33sp axle, it's plent'y beef, other than it's C clip axle, but even a C clip on a 33sp rear is gonna be beef!

the only difference in a 10 bolt and a 44 is the 28 vs 30 sp axles... and that CAN be changed ;)

i always heard that hummers used amc 20 r&p's in thier ifs but i don't know for sure. last i hear the sf14 had an arb made for it but that was it. that' been over a year ago so it could have changed.

HA!!! I just quoted you...:D:D:D

Actually I heard from a very reputable source(cant say who or where so dont ask) that the Eton E-locker WILL be coming out for the 9.5" 14bolt and is going to be very resonably priced(I think most will be happy with the pricing of these)

The H2's use the sf 14 for the rear. Military Hummers use the amc 20. Also 10 bolt fronts are 30 spline.
