: Rollover video from Proving Grounds
Scott@Rockstomper 04-18-2002, 07:05 AM OK, I've got a copy of it (I just got it yesterday on VHS) so I did the redneck digitizer thing, and held the digital camera up to the TV while playing it. The quality sucks, but hey, it's fun carnage. :)
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/trails/moab/ejs02/provinggrounds329/lgrollover.mpg
is 1.3MB of the rollover.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/trails/moab/ejs02/provinggrounds329/smrollover.mpg
is 480kB, still the roll, just shrunk to make it quicker to download.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/trails/moab/ejs02/provinggrounds329/lgrecovery.mpg
is 1.3MB of recovery.
http://www.rockstomper.com/images/trails/moab/ejs02/provinggrounds329/smrecovery.mpg
is the smaller (650kB) recovery version.
Aggro 04-18-2002, 07:38 AM Waht Lame said... COOL!
Yeah, dig the tv!
fatkid 04-18-2002, 08:10 AM Way to save it...:)
46willys 04-18-2002, 08:46 AM You know whats really cool?
Roll Cages:D
bigdude 04-18-2002, 08:57 AM I like the recovery;)
Get some video wizard to splice 'em together, make it look like one smooth landing from a graceful dismount:D
offroadr35 04-18-2002, 09:04 AM haha those are so ghetto. very graceful though:flipoff2:
rpenner54 04-18-2002, 09:16 AM Dang dude! That is sweet!!! :D Roll Cages are cool...
randii 04-18-2002, 09:33 AM As usual, pictures show NOTHING of the obstacle's angle.
<armchair driver mode on>
Looks like it was gently hopping, and you backed out of it in enough time to stop forward motion, but the residual bounce (from the no-air boggers or the super-cush springs, who knows) pushed you *just* past the balance point.... think there was anything different you coulda done to save it, once that left sidewall popped you up?
<armchair driver mode off>
Looks fun, Scott -- nice work on that cage. When I saw it there was very little damage, considering the roll. That was just an exceptionally talented rock to target your spreaders and get cab....

Backed out of it? I was standing on it about as hard as I could. I think the "backed out of it" that you saw/heard, was when the engine died (for the umpteenth time) courtesy of being so near vertical. Doh! :)
The supercush springs and no-air Boggers, all contributed to the bounce; even with the shocks at 4, it still can get to hopping (obviously) a bit.
Once the front end was up, and the right front was unloaded, I knew it was going over; I turned to Steve (red shirt next to the left front), hollered "Going over!" and he ran away, then I ducked for cover and waited for the world to stop. Basically, I knew slightly before he turned and ran, that I was going over, and there wasn't anything I could've done to save it. Prior to that, I was basically just climbing, and it felt fine.
Bottom line, that particular obstacle is set up, combined with my suspension, such that there's very little between "climbing and stable" and "inverted". Guess we've found an obstacle the Mantis just doesn't do well.
Considering the direction of the rollover, had I taken a cable from the top of the obstacle (approximately where the cameraman is standing), I probably would've been fine, but as far as driver input available at the time of rollover, I don't think there was a lot that I could've done.
randii 04-18-2002, 10:21 PM Backed out of it?
Backed out of the THROTTLE. guess the engine dying does the same thing.
Stabbing the clutch probably wouldn't have helped, either, once the nose started to go over. At least you knew it and had a chance to grab hold and brace for the ride.
Great pix, man!

Exactly... I think we're both saying the same thing, just in different words. As you can see by the brakelights, when it went, I went for the brakes (instinct) and the clutch to some extent... but until it was very solidly past the point of no return, I was pretty heavy on the throttle.

Actually, I think I did go for the clutch, but I don't specifically remember trying that. I recall a sequence of events something like this:
Climbing/crabbing left
Steve telling me to turn back to the right
Me turning back to the right
Climbing hard
Right front coming up/suspension unloading
Me turning to Steve, saying "Going over!"
Steve turning and running away
Me grabbing the wheel and pushing up hard to try and plant my butt into the seat as best I can
Watching Steve turn and run, then the driver's side mirror gets torn off on the rock.
Thinking "breaking glass, duck/cover/close eyes"
Ducking/closing eyes, still white-knuckle deathgrip on the wheel, pushing up hard, diving for the center of the truck as best I can
Big bang/crunch, my sunglasses are gone, and all my stuff is on the roof
Hollering "I'm OK" about six times
Crawling out through the back window
randii 04-19-2002, 09:01 AM Good think you're a skinny squirrel (flying?). :D
For those of you that have not met Scott, picture a six-foot tall fella weighing mebbe 160. Then add a copious coating of grease and stubble, adding another five pounds. When I was on Rubicon with Scott, a breeze blew up and I thought we were gonna loose 'im... :D
Hell, his DOG is gonna weigh more than him!

LOL I will agree with that. :D Scott how do you do it? Probably not having a desk job helps a ton eh? :)

I was in LA over the weekend, and stopped in to visit the in-laws for a couple days; while I was there, I got her younger sister's (long since moved out) old room. There was an old bathroom scale, so I figured "hmm, I wonder..." and hopped on... either I've lost a lot of weight recently, or that's a woman's scale... 'cause it came back with 135 for me. I don't think so.
Anyway, the whole roadtrip-not-eating-normal-meals thing probably helps, but as my former boss can attest, betting against me putting away a lot of food, is a bad idea. I won lunch a few times that way, at my last job. I'm not sure what else, I eat a lot (I think), I just can't seem to put any weight on.
And yeah, after looking at how big that rear slider window is, and knowing from memory that the windshield was too intact to go through, and both side windows were blocked... it's a very good thing I'm a skinny little squirrel. :)
Incidentally, my dog is about four months (if that) from outweighing my wife--by the time the dog is 1 year old, I'm expecting that she'll be even, weightwise, with Regina. By 2 years old, she'll be done getting bigger (in theory) and I suspect that she'll be somewhere around 140ish.
jp008 04-19-2002, 05:57 PM :D Looks like fun.... :D
85TrailToy 04-19-2002, 06:21 PM Way cool!:D Didn't know you rolled the Mantis. It looks so low it's hard to believe it rolled. *yeah right*:D

Back when I had an MR2, I used to wonder how there were so many rollover tales of MR2's... those are tough to roll. Having had the Mantis to 60 degrees sideways before, and not rolled it, I figured it'd take a lot to put it over. But it just goes to show...
If you want rollover carnage, put a fresh paint job on a trail truck.
:) :) :) :)
BIGBIRD 04-20-2002, 05:37 PM i thought you had 1 to many drops on your head. , that explains it!!:flipoff2:
