: Torque Chain/Torque Strap for my RamJet?
Jakesteramalamajama 04-18-2002, 08:58 AM Hey all,
I'm installing a RamJet 350 in my YJ and I'm concerned about breaking the rubber engine mounts. I don't want to go with solid mounts for vibration reasons, so I was thinking of fabricating some sort of torque chain or torque strap.
Anyone made their own?
Got a pic?
Where is the "normal" place to hook a torque strap to an SBC 350? I was thinking of bolting a plate to the three holes in the back of the head (same location as the three accessory mount holes in the front--but on the back of the engine) and mounting the chain to that...
Whaddaya think?
Thanks,
Jake
The Rockslut 04-18-2002, 09:06 AM I used a short peice of chain from a motor mount bolt over to the frame. This kept the chain short and out of the way. This was on a 68 Chevelle so i am not sure what clearance issues you may have.
FatCity 04-18-2002, 09:44 AM Someone makes a urothane motor mount for those things(I think)
But if you need a strap I would use a cable with eyelets on each end and bot it to the motor mount bolts (Engine/Frame)

Most of the ones I see use the accesory drive mounts on the front of the head to attach to. I have seen everything from a chunk of chain bolted to the motor and then welded to the frame to supa pimp turn buckle ones. anything works as long as it is secured good, I would recomend keeping it taunt just a hair when you install it so that it does not keep getting a shock load put on it. Ace hardware turnbuckles with the eye-bolts in the ends work good for this.

oldjeep 04-18-2002, 11:07 AM Might be better off if you limit it with something more progressive than a chain or strap. The comanche I have, has a little shock absorber mounted up front as a torque limiter (on a 2.5 I have no idea why).
I've seen similiar setups in a lot of front wheel drive cars.

MattS 04-18-2002, 11:48 AM Almost all of the turbo buick guys have to do this. Some use chains or cables even seatbelts!!
If your already fabbing stuff why not make some motor bumpstops? You could do them on each side of the motor coming from the top of the frame. When it twists it will just touch the stop.
This is what I have planned.
Realsquash 04-18-2002, 11:57 AM Get some better motor mounts, you don't need a chain or strap on your engine. A ramjet 350 isn't that strong.

I'm not so concerned about the engine torque alone so much as I'm concerned about what happens when you apply that torque (400 ft-lbs) with the suspension twisted up and the frame flexing.
Read Loppy's post in this thread:

It's near the bottom.
He's got the same engine mount (AA Cradle mount for a 350 going in a YJ) with a regular TPI 350 and he broke one of his mounts the first time he wheeled it.

mytzlflick 04-18-2002, 01:09 PM I used an old shock for mine, put it in topped right out, the rubber mounts stop all vibration, if you want something more solid go to the wreckers and look at fwd cars, lot of them have a nice cast aluminum bar with bushings at both ends that will do the same thing.
LOPPY 04-18-2002, 01:31 PM Hahahaha... I posted on that other thread before I sas this one... You read my mind.
1. since you have the Mogul mounts in, just leave em in. Not worth doing the job over. Yes, poly mounts would be great but...
2. I love all the fancy schmancy ideas here. But the bottom line is it only need be simple. Bolt chain to aux acc mount hole, take other end of chain and weld to frame. Done. :D

I said cable because it would simply look better than a length of chain dangling from the end of the motor.
If you're going to do it, you might as well make it look deacent.
Come on guy's,
a farmer can hack a piece of chain on his tracter.

Dustball 04-19-2002, 12:07 AM I've seen a thing on the net somewhere where the guy used a big turnbuckle, one end on the frame and other end on the motor. I'm gonna do this soon but use some shock eye bushings inside the turnbuckle eyes.
StinkBug 04-19-2002, 01:25 AM why dont you just make some motor mounts that fully capture like these:
http://community.webshots.com/photo/33134440/33657624YEAoNq
it may be a bit more work but it ends up a lot cleaner and more professional than a chain bolted to the motor. another bonus is i can replace the bushings on both sides with poly for $10.

Hard to see in that small pic, but I think I know what you're talking about--using a round bushing in a sleeve with a bolt through it. OEM Jeep YJ mounts are similar.
That IS a good idea, but I already have around 150 bucks into the cradle mount and, like Loppy said, it's probably not worth doing over. I talked to the local hardware store guy yesterday and they can cut cable to length and crimp it with an eye on each end. I'll probably go that route. Since it will be way back under the brake booster you won't even be able to see it.
Thanks for all your replys guys,
