: Rear Steering

Has anybody done this? or thought about it, I did a search but turned up nil.
Here is my idea, take the front knuckel tubes off of a fj40 ( cut off with a big pipe cutter, just the outer tube!) and then cut off the rear axle flanges. Then slide in the front axle tubes ,set caster and weld up! Then transfer all steering parts, add hydraulic ram for steering.
If a guy was to do this, he would get a full floating rear with disk brakes and hubs. The down side is useing birfields on all four corners, but I think that birfields are only weak when at high angle (correct me if wrong)
The advantage of a full floater with hubs would make this swap cool all by itself, but add rear steer and you could have real fun!
Imagine paralell (sp?) parking with all wheel steering!! The fun would be endless, like driving down the road sideways.... heh!

Ok, fire away

there was a blue cruiser that had done that. Personally I can't see why you would want to add another set of BF into your drivetrain!! The rear axle sees more stress than the front so breakage would be more common..

Get a 60 and make it work for rear steer....

I don't know about you, but my tires are already pretty tight on the frame...trying to steer would make a mess of things, IMO. You want to end up a fair amount wider.

And I also think your asking for birfield and knuckle trouble. D44 or D60 for that project. Also, if you check, I "think" a front housing can be rotated over and, with some grinding for ring gear clearance, and a cover mod, you might be able to drop it in....IIRC, the bolts line up.

I'm not a fan of rear steer, and I think it's for people who are lacking in other skills. That being said, I also thought that about SOA's and tires over 33", and I got over those so who knows.... :flipoff2:

Coming up on this issue of TT (at the press) is a project buildup article by Jim Van De Ven that details his installation of rear steering using a Dana 60.

Keep in mind that you will have to scrap the rear half of the FJ40 frame to make this work.

Woody, Tracy Jordan converted his "FJ40" (not a lot of FJ40 left) to rear steering last year, and has used it to great advantage on the RCAA series. I've wheeled with this guy and he is awesome, way before he went to rear steering. That said, I tend to agree, rear steering for a regular wheeling Land Cruiser might be overkill, and it certainly adds a new layer of parts that could fail on the trail.

yeah, the guys I've wheeled with thus far with rear steer did not impress me....I did better with 33" tires and normal steering than they could with 40's and rear steer....IMO, they probably couldn't drive before, and the rear steer just made them dumber.

Course, they were driving Jeeps, so that may have something to do with it.... (awaiting NASTY post from jeep owners everywhere....heh heh)

I've played with the idea, but not yet....haven't hit any situations yet where some driving skill didn't over come. For competition tho, I can see some use...too bad you get penalized for using it!

You do get penalized? I wonder why...

I think Im after the fullfloat/locking hub aspect more than the steering. I wonder if a guy could rig a front spindle on the rear and have custom axles made, then use all the disk hub parts in the rear. if a guy spaced it rite then maybe you could use GM calipers for breaks.

For the FJ40 wheelbase, not many places I would WANT rear steering. On my full size Crew Cab... boy would that be nice!

I remember driving some of the rear steer Nissan Sedans. Interesting on high speed lane changes (rears steer same direction as front), but when it came time to full opposite lock steering on a turn... WATCH OUT! Nice thing about being "an older Dude"... cops spot me with a opposite lock turn on the street, and rather than getting a ticket I get a "we'll get a sand truck out to clean up that oil spill SIR!" :D

Tempted to put some "highschool kid stickers" on my little Nissan... easier to pass of with "Damn, my trucks in the shop and I borrowed this from my son... "

Cruzilla -- it's been done. Just looked on woody's site for a link but didn't spot it. I remember someone modified a stock FJ60 rear semi floating into a full floater using the hubs, etc. I use a tow dolly, so a full floating rear axle with locking hubs would be good for just the tow trips.

FJ60 rear diff with disc brakes and full floater?
GOT IT ;)

I have rear disc, and full-floater, too. oh wait?

anyways, i think using a cruiser front end end in rear is a waste of time. They are too weak to even be good front ends, much less rears. Any rear-steer axle needs to be AT LEAST a D60, preferrably with CTM's.

but, in reality, we all know that Rockwells are the best for rear-steer, hehehe.
