: RRO tcase WARNING!!

Some of you may remember a post I made a few days ago about my tcase squealing terribly. I bought a Petroworks rebuild kit and rebuilt it today. The tcase is a RRO 4.16:1 tcase bought assembled direct from RRO by the previous owner. The previous owner trailered so there were very little miles on this tcase.

Upon disassembly the first thing I noticed was that NONE of the case bolts were torqued. I could literally just tap the ratchet to break them free. A couple were barely hand tight. I also found that there were no shims used and one of the thrust washers was completely trashed. Apparently that was what my squeal was. Upon reassembly I had to use all of the shims in the petroworks kit to get the right gap. All of the bearings appeared to be in fine condition. I replaced them anyway.

Basically I just want those of you with a RRo tcase to watch out. Check the torque on the case bolts and if you develop a squeal take it apart before buying any parts. If you are considering buying one please jsut buy the gears and do it yourself so you know it was done right. I don't expect anything from this nor do I wish to bash RRO. Just watch your butt.

Below is a pic of the numbering on the top of the tcase. I am guessing they are ratio, serial #, and person who assembled it.

The second pic is of the thrust washers. You can see that the one on the left is completely shredded.

Here is a better pic. I was told by someone that this was caused because when they put the case together the thrust washer fell out of its notch. Still unacceptable for the $$ they charge. I hope I got it back together right.

I am starting to believe that. When I emailed them about the squeal a week ago I never got a reply. I thought it was from water in the tcase or something then I find out it was there fuck up. Also I went through and read every single post the previous owner ever made on Zuwharrie and he had a lot of trouble with RRO. I'll never buy anything from them.

Not to stick up for RRO in any way shape or form, but blaming them for something you didn't even purchase from them.. considering it's gone through a few owners.. is pretty lame.

But yeah, buy elsewhere...

Edit: using some super sticky grease on those things makes em go back together pretty easy - rarely do I have one drop out on me.

Yay jag off! The facts are that they built it and they fucked it up. I am just the messenger. If you dont like it then go buy their shit.

So if the case I bought from TT broke (and I wheeled the rig) should I blame them?

Now, I hate RRO with a passion... they screwed with me in the worst way but I think your complaint is a little unfocused. How long ago was the case built by them? How long had it been wheeled? What were the elements it was exposed to?

I'm glad, however, to see you found the problem and saved yourself some headache (and $) down the road.

Aint that the truth. I suggested a good friend buy one of their gearsets for a sami case. I'll NEVER make that mistake again. After doing the gear swap we sent the old gears back for the core. Weeks went by then months and several attempts were made to get back the core charge. We heard every excuse in the book, "from we didnt get them"...to "they were not salvagable". It fawkin sux to deal with assholes like them. We sent good gears back. In the end pinky (from pinky and fattys funland..a private free offroad park) ended up paying more for those welded 4.16 gears than a good set of lower gears. NOt only that but he spent the time to package and send them back. RRO sux donkey balls. If I ever saw those guys on the trail I'd have a hard time not sticking a bananna in their tailpipes.:flipoff2:

Yeah but we arent talking about abuse here. It was incorrectly assembled. Plain and simple.

Maybe you should re-read my post. Already said to buy elsewhere - guess you were too butt-hurt that somebody doesn't agree with your vendor bashing to see what I really said. Too much time has passed - your not the original owner - you don't know the full history of the t-case regardless what the other owner told you. I simply don't think you have any room to bitch that a USED t-case has loose bolts and ate a bushing - regardless of it's history.

I had to repair the electic windows in my used F350 because some solenoids were a bit worn out... god damn Ford builds a shitty truck?? Same shit.. give me a break.

Used is used "jag off"

I think I made it quite clear that I was just informing people of my experience so that they don't have the same issues. Apparently you think I am just bitching and moaning which is not the case at all. I could have kept my mouth shut but my intention is to possibly help save other people money. There will always be people in this world like you that argue about shit you don't even care about just to argue. I can live with that.

Naah, don't feel like argueing at all really. Maybe you just came across wrong - no worries.. you win.

Sorry if I came across wrong.

Anyone know if there is anything special I need to do for break in on this tcase? I figure I will drive it on a few short drives and let it cool in between. I may drive it to work next week to get some miles on it before I venture off on the 2 hour journey to Zuki Melt in two weeks.
