Just got done putting a lift and SYE kit on a 2001 TJ and during the test ride noticed a noise .The first thought that it was a problem with the instalation of the SYE but the niose sounds as if it is transmission or through out bearing related. With the tranny in neutral you can hear what sounds like a bad gear rattling around ,but even with the transfer case in neutral it makes the noise. The noise goes away when the clutch is depressed, and there is no noise when the Jeep is in motion. The SYE is from Tera and the lift is from Pro Comp.I will take the Jeep to my Local driveline shop on monday for a second opinion, but in the mean time ,is it tranny related or was the Sye kit that I put in done wrong ?????

If you have the nv3550 manual transmission, they are known to be noisy.
You description sounds about right.

mine does the same, it even chatters if i cut the ignition with the clutch out, but with the clutch in all is quiet. im gonna put a new clutch in and check my hydrolics while im in there when i do my build just to see. but my 2000 has always done it off and on. sometimes louder than other days, im almost thinking i need to bleed the clutch,

I took the case back out this morning and split the case to make sure my work was right, and it was. When I had the transfer case off the truck I started it and sure enough it was as loud as ever.It is still under warrenty so I will put it in the shop just to make sure the tranny is OK but more than likely its just loud and Im just paranoid. Thanks for the response.

I've replaced a LOT of cluster gears on those trannies in both TJ's and Dakota's for pitting on the end roller bearing surface. loud growl as long as the clutch is out.

Tool box,"loud growl" is exactly what it does with the clutch out.so later this week it will go to the shop and I will post the outcome.

I've been having the same difficulty in a 2000 TJ. In fact it gets really loud if you creep up a hill at lower RPMs in first gear. Sounds similar to dieseling. Like you I also get the noise if I shut down with the clutch out, but not with the clutch in. Clunks in gear changes from 1st through 3rd, but not 4th & 5th.
Did you get it in the shop? What was the outcome?

There is a TSB for this problem...the dealership will warranty it and replace something...but it's still gonna make noise
My 03 TJ does the exact thing and there is really no cure for it in the 3550...
The outcome will be this:
Dealer replaces part...you still here the noise just not as loud :D
Thanks and have a nice day

Mine has done this since the day I picked it up at the dealership. Maybe not as loud as you seem to make it sound, mine seems more like marbles rolling around... Have had it looked at and been told "it's the NV3550... live with it" says the "stealer"
