: Replacement Radiator?
GloNDark 04-18-2002, 10:51 AM What is everyone running for a radiator?
I have noticed a slow leak getting worse on beaker, and it's about time to replace the radiator.
Is there a good "junkyard radiator" that would work? Or am I stuck going with something from summit? Griffin maybe??
Also, how are you guys mounting your new radiators? THANKS!
Chris

No inner fenders was the best thing for cooling I ever did to my cruiser....granted it wasn't by choice...but still..:D:D:D

The Jerk 04-18-2002, 12:08 PM well i left my lil fender on and the skirt that the hood attaches too. it uses the support down to the frame for the fender suport. look sgay but soon i will ditch it all and do somethin glike glo boy! jiMMy
Mustard Dog 04-18-2002, 12:13 PM I don't think I want to lose the fenders or bibs just yet:p I will take a good look at what I can cut away when I get home:D
Mustard Dog 04-18-2002, 12:16 PM Hey Glo, wait till you see the front end we did, looks great:D We just got our new digi cam yesterday, so I'll try to get some pics posted;)

That's what I was thinking. I also figured that with the type of wheelin we do I wont really need the splash protection the wells provide;)
Cruzilla 04-18-2002, 12:29 PM I used a radiator out of a 84 ford F150, its a cross flow and its as big as I could find that would fit without moding the inner fenders.
I think my core size is 19"x21" it works great but I had to have it re-cored with a L-core four row core, it's brass copper so it can be fixed on the trail (unlike alum.) Overall it was like 300 bones but I feel it was worth it. Also keep in mind that my rig has an auto in it so it generates more heat than a stick.
Tankota 04-18-2002, 01:13 PM When my 4 core fj40 rad went south I swapped in a fj55 radiator. IT was a bit wider but has worked fine since. I will likely be swapping it out soon (next 1-2 months) and selling it for $50.
I spent $50 for the rad then had a rad shop do $110 worth of work on it:( . Only had it in there two years. The reason for pulling it out is that I won an aluminum radiator last fall.
Junkyard 04-18-2002, 01:15 PM I've got a Griffon 19"x26" and use a regular mechanical puller fan plus an electric pusher. Runs at 185 all the time.
No problemo!
ehsankiani 04-18-2002, 01:28 PM I have a stock 79 Jeep Cherokee radiator for my toyota B2 deisel engine...a regular mechanical puler fan and 2 1986 Toyota corolla pusher fans.
Reddog 04-18-2002, 09:04 PM The griffin works well, my V8 has been running cosistantly between 180 and 190. Mechanical 18 inch flex fan. Thermostat is 180.
I used to run 200 to 220 with a 4-core LC radiator with an electric fan.
arndog 04-18-2002, 11:51 PM griffen works for me
cheap and easy and brand new
pontiota 04-19-2002, 08:44 AM Just a little curve, Cutting out the fenders might hurt if you drive any on the street at a higher speed you will be incressing the pressure behind the radiator. I have a stock 4o radiator with a V8 and the only problem I have is my tempature starts to climb after 55mph not to bad just gose to 200 at 65 but its because of the spring over I get a lot of air flow comming up from underneath. Just something else to think about.
Erik D_lux 04-20-2002, 12:07 AM I took my rad into a shop and told them to hook me up with a 5 core but keep the top and bottom tanks. It cost $200 or so dollars but it was no mods and it cools like a mutha :D
When I rolled in Moab it dented my rad and it leaked. I drove it all the way back to salt lake with hardly any antifreeze in it in the middle of summer  I would do the 5 core again for sure!
Mustard Dog 04-21-2002, 12:30 PM Ok so I went and cut the inner wells, BIG difference in cooling:eek: :D :D Thank's for the suggestion guys;)
Mustard Dog 04-21-2002, 12:32 PM Here's the oyher side;)
GloNDark 04-22-2002, 10:30 AM Sweet Eric. Looks good too. I have seen some hack jobs but that turned out really clean. :D:D:D
What motor are you running in there?? :D
Eskimo 04-22-2002, 11:05 AM I'm using a 4-core rad from JT outfitters, and a crappy electric fan from a GM 3.8 FWD car... it does ifne on the trail and under 50... above that, it heats up. I just ordered a black magic fan which flows a TON of air, and it should help my cooling problems...
I also cut out the back of the inner fenders, just like Eric, just not as cleanly :D
