RTH: Best place to buy trailer axel in Sacramento?

Lost both bearings on the left rear axel this AM as I pulled out of Sacto for Oregon post Con. This took out the spindle and that’s it for the axel. Any suggestions for a good trailer supply house in Sacramento? I tried the BS guys at one of the listed Dexter axel dealers. Sucker gave me directions there and said they should have it in stock. Got there 2hrs later (Its freekin hot right now too!) and he says “gee I don’t know what we have and if I did I cant ring it up….I just rent the moving vans” *&%^$* I left before I lost it completely. B&L RV SUCKS!

Ok so where is that Sac town trailer supply? If I can’t find it it’s a 3hr drive down to Six Robles near Porterville. (I know they will have it.)

PS: Tony if you read this, Todd K got to the air port no problem last night. Outstanding event!

Noodles,

Thank you for the link, I went through the Verison pages on line as well as Googol today and nothing. Your link shows a few new ones, I will start calling them tomorrow AM.

I know there are other axel manufacturers but it just seams odd non of these are Dexter dealers. They seem like they may be RV places that service trailers. Eh I will find out, if all else fails it’s a 210 mile trip each way to Six Robles, I know they stock what I need.

Thank you again. And not in the trailer sections since I know there is a good population of cruiser guys in Sac town. (And I trust Cruiser guys more)

Thanks Mace! I can find the hubs and brakes but just not the axle tube I need.

4::45 Up
4:58 Leave Ione Ca.
7:50 Arrive at Six Robles in Oakland CA
8:01 They open and I find out they don’t stock any axles, they come out of Seattle ARRRRR

Major credit to Six Robles the manager Mike worked the phones as I did the same and we located two places that should have what I need. Sitting in the parking lot of one right now (Gota love EDVO net access!) and they have it in stock. Just waiting for a call back from the other wholesaler to see if the price is any better.

Good thing I have the welding gear with me, the spring perches do not come pre installed! I used the gear in the springs to beef up my bent radius arm. The power was fading on the two blue tops at that time so I hope they have enough juice for this.

Tick tock, sheesh two extra days to get home.

Mark-
If you don't find what you need and are still in the Oakland Area call B&D Trailers in Martinez 925-370-3950. They don't stock a lot of parts but usually have a few axles lying around. They sell few different brands of trailers. Brian is one of the owners that I deal with.

Where in Ione are you? Do you need a hand? I'm only 12 miles up the road from Ione. I could come by.

OK Butch you are in the field of this. Why is it that I have to repack my trailer bearings almost every trip and I do nothing to the Cruiser bearings for years on end and it gets used almost daily? Is it because I have good Koyo bearings and a nice Toyota seal in the Cruiser and the trailer has made in China, Mexico, and Russia JUNK? Why can't I go buy decent bearings for my trailer? I've tried even at a bearing shop and all they can offer is a different brand of made in China. I'd gladly pay 3 or 4 times what I pay for this CRAP if I didn't have to do it every trip. I've considered having a custom axle made for my pop up that uses Cruiser spindles and hubs. Then I could do it once and leave it for a few years. Any better suggestions?

Back home as of 5:00 PM yesterday.

Dave thanks for the suggestion in Oakland.

David and Bill thank you for your offers to help. I should have checked my e-mail before I drove out of the EDVO range. (Right about your house too Bill!)

Bill, I looked for you’re your piggy each time I drove by the roster boot camp but you were out each time.

I put almost 500 miles on the truck Monday tracking down the axle I needed. With the help of Six Robles in Oakland I ended up setting up an account with the main trailer supply wholesaler for Nor-Cal. (A bit of a process) So get this…… they are located…… in Sacramento! Arrrgh. This is where all the local Sacto trailer shops most likely would have ordered the parts from. Even two of the bay area trailer supplies indicated that is where they would have pulled the axel from. Metal-tech is now a trailer parts retailer for Wholesale Trailer Co. This is good since I have an Oregon biz address no State of Ca. sales tax and the parts were at wholesale.

I had to pick up a few tools but they are ones I can use in the shop or trail anyway. I got the new axel welded up, installed and wired in about 3 hrs. (98* and in the sun too) The day started at 4:45 AM, 500 miles later the trailer was ready for the road and loaded by 9:30 PM. Fortunately my in-laws have a nice pool, jumped in that before heading off to bed.

Butch,

I serviced the trailer about a month before Cruise Moab in anticipation of the wheeling season. This failure still could have been prevented. The dust cap on the wheel that failed came off on the way back from CM06. I did not replace it before leaving for Rubithon. I think that the exposed bearings shot all their grease out as I drove down to CA. A combination of excessive heat with a heavy load and real hot ambient air liquefied the grease. (Redding CA was 117* on Sunday!) With the dust cap missing all the grease just ran out.

Quite honestly I got real lucky when they failed. On the way down to CA I had an appointment with a customer in Redding CA and I needed to pick Todd K. up at the Sacto airport. A trailer issue would have messed either up real good. The bearings obviously did critical failure right as I pulled into my In Laws house. My father in law found the rollers laying in the driveway why we were on the Con. Mechanics is not his thing so he had no clue what they were. I also check the trailer hubs every time I stop (just put a finger on each for excessive heat). This should have been a one stop trip for diesel but with the 3 and 5 year old, we stopped probably 4-5 times. Each stop the hubs were good.

Todd and I pulled the 80 off the trailer and drove up to the trail head in the Cruiser. MAJOR lucky move!

I am thinking I may need to consider a bigger trailer anyway. The axels are rated at 3500lbs apiece. I weighed the loaded trailer at the axels and got 7150lbs. That new pig is heavy.

Sorry I didn't get to this thread sooner.:( I could've saved ya some time. My co. has an account thru WTS co. I figured you already had this taken care of.

For the upgrade axle, use you account thru them and get dual 5-7K rated axles w/ brakes on them. Then it's just a matter of swapping axles and running another brake control wire. Saves yourself some money, unless you really want a new trailer for the 80. Don't forget to consider the springs too. BTW, WTS's phone sales guys aren't always the easiest on people. They prefer you to have all the p/n's when calling. Just be ready for the awesome prices on items:smokin:
Take care,

You can get quality Timken bearings for your trailer, just take the numbers off the 2 parts, the cone and the race, then a good parts guy can set you up with these .......... use quality grease, we have used Vavoline hi temp red in our shop for 25 years and do not have any problems at all and don't plan on changing.
I pack mine once a year and knock on wood have never had a failure..........we had a member of our caravan to Moab loose one 60 miles out a couple of years ago, after me posting to all, to inspect and pack them prior to our trip:mad3: :mad3: :mad3: :mad3:
I was not very tactful after this costing us 2 hrs.......

This was what dripped out of the failed hub. I have been using the same stuff for years as well, works great! (As long as it can stay with the bearings!) Need that cap! I have already earmarked new caps as part of the service for the trailer. From here on out its new inner seals and caps to pack the bearings, not just the seals. Its always a stupid $1.49 part that ends up costing you $1000 to fix.

On my 6x10 quad trailer I repacked the bearings on both sides and put a new cap on one side before I headed to Johnson valley in April. My first stop in town the new cap was missing WTF:mad3:. I didn't have an extra with me so I took a plastic cap off of a can of PB blaster and taped on the new cap.
While getting ready for my trip to Utah a couple weeks ago I decided to re-replace the cap so I bought 2 new one (one for a spare) it seemed to fit good, not real tight but had to tap it in with a hammer. Again I head off for my trip, and my fist stop I go and check the hubs and wtf its missing again, so out came the duct tape again. Maybe I will tack weld them on next time :D
