View Full Version : exhaust heat problem in CJ7
I have a 79 CJ7 with the 304, and am having a problem with the exhaust getting way to hot!!! Ive tried all the things from adjusting the timing to having the exhaust redone. Have any of you guys out there had this problem??? Any hepl would be greatly appreciated. The exhaust is, stock manifolds to a y to a cat to a flowmaster at 2"
For local inspection purposes I have to keep the cat, but should I do headders and dual exhaust, then put the other back on once a year if I hd to???

2) 4" x 18" louvers installed in the hood of my `72 cj5 went along way toward helping to cool my 401.

Is it too hot under the hood or too hot under the tub? If it's under the hood you can coat your manifolds i've had good luck with the kit from Eastwood.
If it's under the tub you need to check your clearances and make heat shields where needed. Also make sure all your drain plugs are in or heat will come up through the holes. I've got three coats of Hurculiner in mine and rubber floor mats to keep the heat down. Also make sure you don't have any open holes in your firewall.

probably the 'heat tape' for the manifold and exhaust would also help in bringing the heat away from the engine bay :)
But like said -> what gets or where does it get too hot?

having never worked with a 304, I will say on 350s I like to run 2.5" exhaust tubes off the manifolds/headers into a single 3" tube then to the muffler/cats.

edit - just did some quick math and the 2.5" pipes have over 50% more area for the exhaust to flow out of
