OK guys,

Let's start a thread that focuses on the positives of the Rubithon.

I can't believe that the only thing that happened was some dude that did not register rolled off Cadillac Hill.

I for one would love to see a new thread started with all the positives of this great event and not just a bunch of posts about a rollover.

Tony and crew did a hell of a job getting this event up and going, let's not make the only thread on Pirate about a negative.

Now, let's roll some pics!!! I stole these from the other thread.

What an awesome time we had!

Our trail committee teams worked their butts off ensuring everyone made it into the springs, our camp committee had the springs and facilities in great shape, the MOG crew transported a ton of stuff, mainly thanks to the efforts of Dave Thomas in securing raffle prizes, our EMT team simply shined although I wish they did not have to, and registration went smooth despite a few Tony type errors.

It was great to see so many friends returning, and so many new faces.

The weather was simply incredible, despite a thunder storm during Sat Night meal prep which certainly kept the dust down.

The retro shirt logos turned out very well and the orange committee shirts only made a few bellies turn. :)

I dropped the ball on a couple of tasks... but as with all TLCA events, folks are there for fun and friendship, not despairing over a missed activity.

Todd Kaderabek made it thanks to Mark Hawley, and both Erik Christianson and Steve Fox made it in thanks to trail volunteers who offered seats and accomodations.

Tom Ferrin, simply looking for a ride, ended up with Ross Woody on Mudraks run and I have to believe he got more Rubithon than he ever envisioned.

Award winners included Ryan Ramsey, Geoff McGuire, new member and 1st Rubithoner Zach Southworth, and the Iron Butt award went to our Canadian friends who returned due to last years weather. :)

and the 2006 Chairmans Award went to Gary 'Mudrak' Kardum... and I don't believe I have to offer explanation for it is self explanatory.

Terri Henli cranked out the meals! Over 250 breakfasts, nearly 250 beef meals and 80 chicken meals. Kudos to the entire Kitchen crew who never cease to amaze me. They were cooking in a thunder shower and smiling the entire time.

Past TLCA Presidents included Mike Bennett and Ron Patston.

The Nor Cal Marauders were in fine fashion and put on one heck of a party on Friday night.

Mark Algazy played guitar Saturday evening around the campfire and I believe this was very successful and will grow in success each year. I even sang one song despite having nearly no voice after Marauder Bar.

Thanks to Mudrak, Big Jim Adams, the Knorr Bros, and PMK for working the exit strategy on Sunday. We had everyone out so fast, we simply backed up on the forest service road. You simply cannot get folks out any faster. Kudos to everyone who supported this effort by not trying to circumnavigate it.

and the best part for me... my wife Cindy was able to attend. I love her dearly and am so very fortunate to have her support in my volunteer efforts.

Thanks to all!!

Here's my take on the week. Jack came down early monday we had breakfast at Rosies then i went to work while he wheeled in towing Jason Berger's trailer. Thanks jason the trailer kicks ass. When i got done work I was packed and cold ones on ice since saturday rolled in monday night solo. Stopped 3 times to tighten ratchet straps and rolled into the springs in a mellow time of 46 minutes. Jack had camp set up and we cruised over to say hi to Bk and Mudrack and crew at the rope swing. Next day we wheeled to buck and had a great time on big sluice. Cruised back to the springs relaxed till 5:00 pm when several other friends were coming in. They hadn't showed yet so jack and i decided to drive my rig up caddy to go meet them on the way in. Jack drove my junk up caddy as i co piloted. Jack had a nice run up the hill. We switch spots at the over look and i figured we would drive out to the staging area and make a cell call to see what the status was. Towner,Jeff and Greg were 10 minutes out from the trail head so we all went back in together. Next day we thought a trip to little sluice was in order so we went up the sluices and had one bit og carnage with Towner snapping a rear shaft. So we parked his rig and went to the box. Greg had a sick run through the box with his cj7 on 35's. Been a long time since I've seen a rig go thru on 35's. I was having fun and ran it downhill to start then front dug it around and ran it the other way. Figure each pass was 20 seconds. Went back to the springs and got to hang out with a lot of great people. I definetly enjoyed hanging out with Preston and Chris(Dhondagod). Greg ended up cracking his bellhousing in half so we yanked his tranny tcase and drivelines out and I towed him out on friday night. Lel was out of town and got home thursday. So we got to spend the evening at home and repack to go back in. Rolled in saturday afternoon in time to make dinner at the springs. The raffle was killer Jim job won one of the tfab polycarb hoods and i won the best price Bkcruiser's custom wilson leather sport jacket. Swede leather with all the trimmings. All in all i put 88.6 miles all trail on the cruiser. It worked flawless the only thing i did was drive over a rock in the middle of the trail hit my rear yoke and break a ujoint cap ear off. Quick tack and was back in buisness. I didn't take much for pictures so.....

Heres a few pics of what happened to Sammys 80 on the way home

251687

251689

The story: I was riding shotgun with Dan aka 'docroh' on westbound 50. A few miles before Placerville the 2 80's passed us moving quick, 75ish. We saw them shortly after that as traffic came to a hault just before the first stop light in Pville. We saw them pull of to the side of road and followed them to see what was going on. By the look of Sammys buddy looking at the front wheel as he rolled forward we knew something was wrong. After snugging up the remaining 2 lugs we followed them into town to an empty gas station parking lot and proceeded on to repairs. Luckily he had enough spare studs to get him back on the road. A few more miles on the road and things could have gotten VERY ugly. On a more positive note, very nice cruiser! Hope you made it home safe.

what's the carnage report, (not including the obvious one)?

the outlaw run:

chris alger: swamped the soa 60 right before the springs in the muddy pond, then hydrolocked the engine crossing the creek into dirty dozen. also busted a rear arb (stripped spiders). chris was able to get the engine running and the diff replaced at camp with some supervision, but doing 90% of the work himself. good job on the repairs chris!

jer: alternator went south, replaced on the trail at buck within a few minutes. also had some carb linkage issues but he was very well prepared and was able to fix everything himself.

marcus: the rookie went completely unscathed, but every body panel on the 55 got tagged, along with a couple of windows. awesome job driving bro!

charlesfj40 aka chop stick charlie: badly bent hydro mount. had to move the ram and weld up what was left of the mount. fixed on trail at buck also. besides that, flawless performance!

dustin aka choreboy: almost perfect until we found out he had a bent rear axle shaft on the way home. nice driving as well! bummer about the leaky air ,atress.

docroh aka dan: also flawless except for some slight overheating issues on the way in.

bioniccruiser aka sean: great driving, even with the trailer in tow. ended up with vapor lock issues that left him stranded on hwy 50. greenfox to the rescue.

dahondagod: almost flawless also except for a nice gash in a swamper sidewall. installed spare on the trail within a few minutes.

greenfox: joined us at ellis the last night and then wheeled out with us. flopped the rig on its side a couple of times to test our new cage with no damage at all. those lockers are making some pretty scary noises though!:barf: ryan definetly deserved the "trail hero" award and even proved this when the event was officially over.

myself: broken toe and a punctured arb line for the front locker. both still busted.:shaking: my air matress took a dive on sunday night at ellis creek as well.

on the way out a few guys from our group went up cadillac hill and some of us went back out thru loon. we also picked up dahondagod, choreboy and matt (not sure of his username on here) in our group.
matt sheared a sector shaft along buck and we had no spares, so we pulled the rig off the trail and he hiked out to get a new steering box.
at the top of the slabs we had to run a small rescue effort to retrieve a dead 55 from the bottom of lost trail. he had no working alternator, the battery was dead and the double steering arm had been "welded" back together by a sammy guy just previous to him getting lost. either way, we were able to get him back up to the trail which cost us roughly 3 hours. then his steering arm busted again at the base of 1000 dollar hill. luckily jimjob had caught up to us by then and he was able to weld the arm up properly. we decided to stay one more night since it was getting late so we camped at ellis creek.

great trip, can't wait for chop stick charlie to post the pics!:D thanks for joining our group guys and for listening to your spotter(s). nice teamwork and fun times at the camp fire!

there were a bunch of jeepers going in today and the chopper made at least 10 flights delivering stuff to the springs so you might want to avoid the trail this coming weekend.

Wow Georg, sounds like you guys had along trip trying to get out to Loon; Dan will be very glad that we went on through to Tahoe. For those of us that continued on up cadillac from the springs, we had a pretty easy trip with no major problems. Chris managed to loose a bead on a rear tire and Dan sprung a leak on an oba hose under the hood.

Actually, Teri Henli and Jim Job did all of the meat purchasing (Costco -- Best you'll find for a large group. USDA Choice). They also marinaded it in.... Yoshidas! I usually use Kinder's Meat Marinade (Blue labe), but the Yoshidas was good as well.

Another "secret" is pulling them from the flames, and then letting them "rest" for 45 - 60 minutes in the ice chests. Stays moist, and yet gets cooked enough.

That was an awesome trip! Good times and we even made it home with some raffle prizes. Thanks again to everyone who made it happen. It is my favorite tripe of the year, and the Rubicon is one of the most beautiful places to camp. The cruiser did awesome. Great location, fun and people.

We drove to Tahoe Monday night and got to homewood around 3:30am. Met up with 55guy, Splitpea, Greg (I forget his username) and MrManny (Mike, Dale, Greg, and Manny) at the staging area on Tahoe side and headed down to the springs. Made good time and didnt run into any traffic except on Cadillac with a bronco coming up on V Rock. He was with a jeep that ran out of fuel. Bronco had a can but no funnel, so we passed him a funnel and were back on our way. We all made a beach front camp down on the slabs next to Mudraks camp.

Mike, Dale, Greg, and Manny left Wednesday to Loon for the Thursday breakfast run. Becky and I hung at the springs for some relaxing and taking in the springs without anyone around. We did some hiking and chatting with the owners and new care taker. Good people. I hope Steve writes a book on the history of the springs. Its got some very interresting history.

Thursday, we met up with the Mog crew to drive into Buck. Fun ride over there. We watched one of the runs head down the sluice. They had one of the FJ's and it was fun watching them get that and the 80 before them through. Saw another rig flop a trailer and rearend the rig infront of him. Good times.

After they got through, we were on our way. At the top we stoped to help Kent (Rat70fj) and John Pardi build a new drive line for Kents son's mini truck. He had twisted the driveline pretty good, and John actually had extra driveline tube with him to make a new line from. It turned out awesome. After that, we parted ways and headed to buck and they headed to the springs.

We got to Buck campground right when Thurs brekfast run did. Perfect timing. We camped with them again and met a bunch of new people. We helped two guys with some badly broken knuckle studs in a stretched 40. We had alot of trouble getting a couple of the studs off, and had to leave them the next am and tried to get a knuckle once in the springs. They were running 76 knuckles though, so it was difficult to locate. Marlin came through and fixed them up though.

Friday, Glenn (Rockthedog) noticed a broken motor mount before leaving Buck and 55guy welded it back together. After Glenn was fixed we headed to the springs and made good time without many people infront of us. That evening we hit Maurader bar and bon fire.

Saturday we relaxed around camp with our chairs in the water. Our camp ended up being the relay/ repeater point for the happenings on Cadillac. That was a bummer, but sounds like things will be okay. Sat night we did dinner and raffle. My wife won twice, with the big one being a 15lb Quickair tank with ALL the bells and wistles. We are stoked! Many thanks to the Quickair guys for donating it.

Sunday we headed out to Loon with George, Mark, Chris, Craig, and Matt. Matt broke a sector shaft on his rig between Buck and the sluice. Bummer. He hoofed it to Loon and we met up wtih him later. We winched out his friend who had taken a wrong turn on the slabs and went waaaaay down the trail. Then later broke his steering arm on his way up 1000 dollar hill. Bummer. We also helped a jeep crew get a frozen hub bolt loose. We camped at Ellis that night since it was getting late. Later that eventing, what do you know? Ryan came crawling in looking for us. That was a fun night of BS'ing. Mark (toploader) is one funny man.

Monday we made good time heading to the Bowl until I made a wrong turn toward Wentworth. It didnt look familiar out there on the slabs and I couldnt figure out why. We tried making our way toward the dam, but no luck. We turned around and headed back toward the turn. George met up with us and we headed out after changing a flat on Chris's rig. After that, it was easy going and we made it to the dam. It was my first time seeing Gatekeeper since it was blown up. The area is still rocky, but an easy drive through. Lots of damage to the trees, but they will survive.

We all headed out to 50 together after getting ice cream at Ice House store. Craig pulled me over since it looked like my rear drivers rim was bent, so we swaped out for the spare. My rig seemed fine except durring hard braking, when my whole rig would shake. I thought it was my steering until George and Mark said they noticed a bent rear drivers axle. Oh well. We drove home on it and it was fine the whole hot 5 hours home.

I'll get pics up tomorrow.

cheers!

Yep you called it. Wrong rig though, he was the yellow 40 with linked rear, not the yellow one from the Trent Fab camp. He was up on the slabs somewhere. Major Bummer...thats a hike out of there.

Thanks Georg! I think the "little supervision" was the key part of getting Team Alger through the trail and repaired. Thanks to everyone who spotted, stacked, jacked, winched, lent tools and parts, and generally assisted us! In general, I think that if my seat was higher, I could actually see the rocks and steer around instead of over....

Full report coming soon. FWIW, I talked to Gordon Wood yesterday [my buddy who's son filleted his finger on the Friday run and had to leave as soon as he got into the Springs Friday evening]

Anyhow, he got into Tahoe about 4 am Saturday and the ER had him in surgery for two hours repairing the muscle, nerve and bone damage along with the infection. They said if he had waited until Saturday to make the drive out, he would probably have lost the finger.

Super kudos to Bad Coco and the other medics that took care of Pat in camp. Super kudos to dhondagod for looking at Gordon's truck and helping get the steering more workable. And SUPER KUDOS to cruzila for escorting Gordon and Pat up Cadillac Hill in the dark. You guys ROCK!

This was my first time driving the rubicon. I rode along last year and I've done parts of fordyce and I've done barrets lake and a few others that were tough, but this was just plain fun. I had a great time and it was a wonderful event. The only thing I really had to complain about was that the FJ team left trash at there campsite which I thought was totally unexpected. They really were the only ones, we walked through all the camps Monday. Other then that one little thing, I was actully very impressed with the FJs. I pretty much hated the things coming into the event, now I stil think they are ugly, but it's not like cruisers have ever been the prettest things on the road. All in all, it was a really fun event. I'll be back again next year for sure.

There is always trash left behind , I have seen people purposely drop bags at other empty camp sites just to dump it. Usually the last person seen there gets the blame. Just pick it up and move on.

MUCH THANKS to Dan, Ryan, Mark, and Jon for help with the wheel stud issue. I did make it home safe an sound many hours after the ordeal. Things definitely could have gotten ugly, but knowing how your truck should sound and having the guys to be your eyes when you can't made all the difference.

On a side note and in looking at the other post pics, there were a lot of rigs and people I did not get to meet unfortunately. Hopefully next year. Make it a point to where a shirt with my online name on it or something.

Opinions will vary on this, no doubt. I was with them the WHOLE time. Moving very "methodically." But they pulled over every chance they got. And for what it's worth, Charles, by the time you passed us (nice to see you, by the way), the Jeeps and Sammis had already been let by at least once before. When you drink as much alcohol as those guys, you have to stop to pee a lot and you get passed as a result.

I had a great time. Camping was great and you could not have asked for better weather and better group to hang out with. Trip to the Rubicon is a MUST do. Much different than any other off roading trip I have done.

Our trip was led by orange45 and toploader. Got to meet/camp/hang out with docroh, ryanxj, bionic cruiser and family, Gerald Josephs, Dr. Dave Tay, Team Alger, Marcus and his g/f, Greenfox, choreboy2, mr. manny, and dhondagod. I hope I didn't leave anyone out.

We had so much food in our camp ground. I think we actually gained weight on this trip. Everyone was so nice. Spending 3 days togther allowed us to have a really tight group and we got to really know each other.

I learned alot on this trip. You don't want pack too much stuff because there is a good chance someone else will have what you need. On-board showers are not needed since you have clear running water nearby. Mosquitos are real hungry.

There was one really scary moment at Buck Lake. We were eating lunch and we heard a weird sound coming from the sky. Next thing we saw was a HUGE splash when something hit the water. I think it might have been a meteor. Good thing I had my new digital SLR camera ready to shoot.

i was trying to keep my mouth shut about this but now i'm gonna have to chime in. we were stuck behind the FJCs for 4 hours. at one point we did pass them cause the blkue one was stuck pretty good. i had no intention of splitting up the breakfast run and getting between the main group and the straggelers. so we went ahead a short distance in order to find a place that offered enough room for our group of 7 rigs to pull over in the shade and eat lunch. we did not want to block the trail.
we were there for about an hour. after lunch we pulled back on the trail and caught up to the FJCs right away, within less than 1/4 mile. the blue FJC seemed to have the most trouble navigating the trail. i attempted to help with the spotting but would'nt be heard. then i kindly asked if it would be possible for him to let us by since by then they were so far behind their breakfast run that there was no chance for them to catch up again and we had firm plans to make it to buck. the reply i got was starteling to say the least so i turned around and walked away. this did'nt need this situation to escalate.
soon after the spotter was convinced to pull over by a group of sammi/jeep guys and we were able to make it past as well. the same guys asked us nicely to let them thru and we did.
we got to camp at buck at dark and had no hold ups of our own, so we should have been there hours before. i do want to mention that the guys in the factory supported yellow FJC and the ARB guys in the silver runner were friendly, professional and courteous. the same can't be said for everybody in their group.
part of my "trail etiquette" is to greet everybody on the trail, help people on the trail, pull over if i'm holding somebody up, pick up trash even if it's not my own and so on. i would expect the same from anybody else sharing the trail with me, especially somebody representing one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world. enough said.

Second, I am very appreciative to Georg for taking the lead to provide a fun and safe group, all be it rebels, and bring your group in. Great folks for sure.

I believe Rubithon will be evolving over the next couple years due to changing trail conditions and there may come a time when we look back at Rubithon 2006 and say 'Now that was a fun event'.

Obviously I cannot speak to what I did not see, but FWIW, the FJC team in OUR Wednesday run was VERY professionally handled by Ron Q and Robbie Antonsen. Both these guys are already TLCA members with LOTS of trail time, and they knew that WE KNEW that any deficiencies in performance were due to the vehicle, not the drivers. That gave them the ability to be a LOT more circumspect about dealing with the other drivers on the trail.

I hope the Trail Team will not be deterred from future participation in TLCA events by anything said on the trail or this bulletin board.

:)

I think there is a huge difference between team #1 (Yellow) and team #2 (Blue).

It's unfortunate, but the guidance the Toyota Corp gave to the trail teams was "no paint scratch, no dent". Having your employer give you that directive TOTALLY changes how you run this trail. If minor carnage was acceptable, they would have been much faster.

Having said that, I ultimately was happy that they made the trip in. I wish it would have went faster for them, but they took care in spots that I would have said "F... it". Of course, that's why my rig looks the way it does.

The reality is there will be more and more FJC on Rubithons. I may be driving one. I hope that by that time there are better options for bumpers, sliders and exo-cages.

There is a whole running thread about exclusivity, and public access on the Rubicon. We need to work together to make the trail accessable and passible by properly modified rigs. Fixing some of the bad spots will reduce erosion and trail damage, but proper mods will also allow faster access for all.

my 2 cents

very well put ross!!!!!!!!!!

please do not get me wrong. i am stoked to see the FJCs up there and would love to see more. but, they, just like anybody else going on the trail, should be properly prepared, be it driver or vehicle. and it would certainly help to have some wheeling experience before tackling a trail like the rubicon.

WHEW! we are finally home from Rubithon. got in late last night. what a FUN time! we finally made it through the whole trail. Georg's run was a blast and i really enjoyed hanging with that crowd of rebels. Charles, it was great getting to see that rig work. and Chris(team Algier), i got a great pic of your rig swimming. i'll post it up later. it was great meeting dhondagod, choreboy, toploader, greenfox (didn't get any video of your rig on it's side, sorry), TRT2, and many more plus seeing some old friends as well.

I got through to the exit of the trail with only a slightly malfuntioning winch, broken POS (by PO) tub mounts on the 40 trailer, and 1 scratch/dent on the trailer's tub. my 40 was undamaged and i took most every hard line i could find, and used the front locker only 3 times... then only to break down with engine troubles on the highway 10 mins after airing up.:mad3:

HUGE THANKS to Greenfox and the guys in the white 60 that helped shuttle me and my wife and kids!!! Cruiser people rock!:smokin: who was it in the 60? i want to thank you by name (i only know the names Eric, Lorne, and John, but not the driver). of course when i got back with the tow rig, the 40 starts right up and drives onto the trailer like nothing happened. i'll post what it was when i get time to look at it.

A huge thanks to our groups fearless, or senseless (depending on how you look at it), leaders. Georg and Mark truly set the pace, and attitude, for our group and did a remarkable job of getting us through the trail with a minimum of hang-ups.

We had an excellent, and eclectic, group that only helped to make the experience that much more enjoyable. I'd have to say that it was probably the most fun I have ever had in a four wheeled vehicle, at least with my pants on:D. It was great meeting and wheeling with you all, and I hope that we have the opportunity to do it again soon, only a year till Rubithon '07!

2. same here

3. my trail etiquette too.

4. My hope is they read this and realize how much they are putting people off that are more qualified than they are to be doing their job. I have run the Rubicon countless times in 14 years, including 13 trips last year with Chrysler corporate. It took me about 15 seconds to see they had no clue.

5. If they were to get no scratches someones in trouble cuz both rear bumper corners were ripped off the blue one. Funnay:laughing: I call bs on that one. They can afford to replace any rig that does not look the part if needed. Heck J**p throws 20-30 rigs at the trail every year. That's only about a million bucks.

In talking with the "Yellow" team, the goal was no scratches to "painted" surfaces. Bumpers, end caps, and skid plates were fair game. Heck, any plastic was fair game.

Jim, your truck spanked that line! Was also glad you put those extra lbs in the tires, the passenger rear had a lot of weight on it when it came over that rock. You still had more to go...

Woooody on the other hand, don't know why your truck just want to be on its side. :shaking:

The exit strategy worked so well, we found out you can only empty so many trucks, so fast, out the Tahoe side. We had everyone up Caddy so fast, we were simply one long line of trucks on the forest service road. this is great.
Thanks to Mudrak, Big Jim, PMK and Knorr bros (55guy and splitpea) for again taking on the extra credit trail duty. Next year we will have a specific trail comm group with PMK taking the lead.

Shawn... nice shots, glad you had a good time!

Ryan... ya, you're the hero of cruiser day.

Chris... hmmm, I'll bet Kathleen was none too happy you sank her truck.
We'll have to discuss the Bonehead ramifications at the next PMC mtg.

71fj55... thank you.

everyone noting some displeasure with the trail pace... blame me. I OK'ed their minimum rqmt deviation and felt that having the FJ Cruisers in attendance at our TLCA event far out weighed the inconvenience of carefully spotting a new truck through the Rubicon in June (at its most toughest).

Tony,. I think people are more upset about the fact that the guy driving the blue FJC was a prick. The slow pace can be dealt with if they get ou tof the way when they can. We all know the con has ample room to let others by... If Iw as behind them and offered my help only to get shot down, I would tell them to go shove their FJC up their ass, and leave (I have done so in the past when offering my help, and getting put down for it)

Shawn, that is a great picture of the sinking 60. We are changing our license plate to "GLUB GLUB"

Kathleen and DTay broke down the headlights and Hellas while we were in camp. Our gear were in plastic buckets, and most of it didn't get too wet; it was so hot that the sun dried anything set out. The biggest bummer was my new digital SLR got damp, not soaked, just moist enough to be a problem.

DTay or Kathleen took a great closeup of the hellas; you can even see the gravel in the bottom. look at the Birfield.com gallery.

How hard of a time did those FJC's have going thru the trail? we're they out there paving the trail just to get thru?? How long did it take their crew to run to the springs?? we've tried to talk the guy out of bringing it, but we may just leave him by himself to suffer (he has warning).

Chuck,
I think it was mostly driver error on the one we were stuck behind. I saw him backing down Walker with a white knuckle grip on the wheel in a very easy spot. He was definitly scared.
With a more set-up rig and good driver it would of went alot faster I think.
The guy was just a fuckin panzie IMO.
Warning are good too though:D

In some places, the stacking got a little excessive. But how much damage is he willing to take? THat's really the difference.

It took them ~20 hours to get to the Springs. Many delays due to others, some due to themselves.
