Just wanted to say thanks to the pirate for all the ideas and inspiration on this build. The truck is a 97 tacoma, started as a 2wd 2.4l. Project is under way and theres no turning back now. Specs:
toyota front axle with long 30 spline axles and inner hubs, new hi pinion e locker front diff, arp knuckle studs and hub studs and billet hi steer arms from Fror. knuckle rebuild kits also from Fror. Front brakes are ifs.
2nd gen rear axle, v6 diff, gonna send ring pinion out for cryo treatment 5.29 gears, rear disk brakes.
W-56 trans bolted to W-59 bellhousing, marlin crawl box with bobby long 4340 output shaft for rear t-case. staying with stock 2.28 gears in both for now, will see about gears from marlin for rear t-case if needed.
Just finished rebuilding the motor, had to get a new head as the old one was cracked.New injectors, alternator and starter, new everything on the motor, new larger 2 core radiator with dual electric fans.
4- link rear and 3 link front with 2 5/8 rebuildable flex joints from Ballistic Fab for one end and Poly Performance bushings one the other end.
ifs gear box and fj-80 tie rod ends.
14" saw coil-overs 2.5" dia.
37" Iroks
warn 8000 winch
co2 tank
3/8 t-case mount plate from Inch-Wormgear
many more goodies as well.
Right now its a frame and stripped cab, just waiting on second t-case so i can set motor/trans in and figure out links.Truck is green, will paint it silver as soon as i get body work finished. Soo much to do and not enough time in the day. If it wasn't for the PBB i dont think it would be as easy as it has been. Thanks to all the people here who have posted their pics and info. And thanks to troy at Cal Mini-Truck for all the help sourcing parts. Troy is great to deal with and killer deals.(and his 1st gen truck is sick!) Also would like to thank all the vendors on the pirate as I have purchased everything from them. I know a build up is no good without pics, i have tons of them and will get them tonight and post them. I just wanted to say the PBB is awesome for sooo much info and inspiration I got my redstar to help support this great place.(and the search function is kinda nice too!) pics coming by tomorrow. will update this as much as possible. thank you everyone here!!!!

Munsen is the my brain behind the whole operation (also my good friend). The entire truck has developed from mostly his research here on PBB. You guys are too awesome, and the information on this site is priceless.
I'll shut up now and post some shit for you guys.

The motor had a warped block and a cracked head.Tha truck had too many miles on it as it was on its second motor already. We draied the radiator and it looked like gear oil.I know the owner of the local engine shop, got everything machined for next to nothing and a new head. it was a 2wd 2rz motor, I'm not sure if they ever had a rear sump pan or not. if i have to iI can either make a new oil pan and pick up or i was thinking if cutting the rail off and fliping the pan around. It looks like it would work. Guess i'll find out when the front axle goes in and clearances are checked out.Anyone know if the 3rz oilpan and pickup bolt on??

Took the 3/8" t-case mounting bracket from Inchworm, and fabbed up 3/8" extensions to the frame rails. Ends are mounted to eurathane bushings.

Gussets still to be added.
Exhaust pipe will be raised closer to the body. Right now the cat sits lower than the frame rail by at least an inch.

Getting ready to start on the rear 4 link, I've searched and read quite a few of the post on here for link design(yes I even read the gods of suspension thread and link for dummies thread, alot of info, but nothing to get a straight answer) and still have a few questions. The truck has 121" wheelbase, saw 2.5" dualrate coil overs with remote res. and 37" iroks. My concerns are that this truck will see alot of road time as well as off road time (as it will be a daily driver)and I'm curious about link lenght and triangulation(and also link lenght vs. wheelbase) Will triangulated uppers and parallel lowers be the best set up for on road stability and rear steer?I'm looking at about 9" of verticle seperation at the axle and 5- 6" at frame mounts, nothing set in stone yet, sound within reason?I will build some adjustability into the link brackets to allow for fine tuning.I cut a mock up for the lower link out of electrical conduit at 45" for the lower links in the rear, seems kinda long.Whats the general belief as far as making the uppers 75% of the lower lenght? I dont want the pinion angle to point down on axle droop. I want to mock up everything out of conduit before I cut the dom tubing cause that chit is expensive! I'm using 1.5" dom thats 1/4" thick and it will be sleeved with 1.75" thats 1/8" thick just to be safe.Any and all input would be appreciated as I know there are quite a few people here who have already gone thru all of this. I know I'm asking alot of questions here, just wanting to see what others have done in their designs and I would like to stay away from using the link calculator if possible cause I would rather build it and get it as opposed to building on the computer forever . Thank you for any insight to my many questions..

This is a badass project. Since you're going all out, when you modify the exhaust, you should put a header on it. Doug Thorley makes some badass Toyota headers. I got one for my 80, very nice.

Longfield order showed up this morning. *drool*
Got the 30 spline cromoly axles, cromoly inner hub gears. 4340 output shaft for the t-case. They even threw in a bad ass shift knob that looks like the axles. :grinpimp:
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/2228/img03939jt.jpg

Some more goodies from FROR. Braided brake lines, pitman arm for IFS box to accept Landcruiser tie rod ends, triple drilled t-case flanges, and rock rings to replace the dust covers.
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/4731/img03944kj.jpg

Cut the cross member out today.
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/1531/img03901vs.jpg

Made something much simpler.
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/7246/img03953gq.jpg

One side welded in. 1/4" plate welded to the inside frame rail for strength.

Waiting for the frame to cool down before attaching the other engine mount.
http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/6943/img04003xr.jpg

That just opened up all sorts of room and cured alot of clearance issues.

This is about as up to the minute update as you can get.

Engine mounts are in!!! Reinforcement gussets to be added tomorrow.
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/8035/img04054fi.jpg

With the axle mocked up at the right hieght, I now have 6"+ to the oil pan. Before I was lucky to have 1 1/2" with the cross member. Theoretically, I only have 4" of down travel in the suspension, so it might be ok. Once the engine gets pulled out one last time, we'll see about maybe modifying this one to spin 180 deg., or go with the T-100 oil pan.

No springs for this beast. Its 4 link rear and a 3 link in front!!! The front will move forward when compressed. After making the new motor mounts there is roughly 6-6.5 inches of clearance from axle to oil pan sump at ride height.Gonna mock up front links and check clearances,if theres a interference problem then its time for a 3rz T100 oilpan and pickup(rearsump).

That was my thinking on the sump location. I thought just about all 4x's had a rear sump. When I've got time I'll check with the dealer to make sure.Would be nice to make a custom oil pan,but I got enough to do on this truck right now. Right now the rear link are being made and everything is welded in.Will post pics tonight or tomorrow.

All Tacomas have a front sump due to the fact that the front diff is towards the rear of the engine. For the 2.7 and the 3.4 you need to use the oil pan and pickup from a 2wd T-100 since they are rear sump oil pans.

The only thing is you have a 2.4 so I dont know what you would use. The new 2.4 is a 2rz-fe I think which is a 2.7 with a smaller bore. You might be able to use the 2.7 t100 pan but im not sure on this at all. Hopefully someone who knows will post up.

Some new pics:
Starting on the front links.
http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/1020/img0500lb3.jpg

The angle in the link will get gussets top and bottom so it's boxed in. This is still only 1 1/4" electrical tubing for mock up.
http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/5130/img0502rz5.jpg

The 12 ton jack stands put the axle above the tire hieght and 3 ton stands are too small, so this wood jig was the solution. Now the axle is level and at the correct location.

Oil pan is here and fits nicely in place. More pics soon.

Clearance for the tire , gives a little more clearance than a straight link, the front axle is narrow. Most tacos run a dana axle in the front.

Cool Big Ron! Springs woulda been quicker and easier but decided to go all out on this one.I compared the price of good springs to hardware and link material and its not much of a difference in price really, just liked the idea of links, looks cool! Cant wait to see your buildup.

One thing I went and checked out just now is the width of the mini axle in the front vs. width of the frame rails for springs. You would probably be better going with a wider front axle like a Dana 44 or maybe even a cruiser axle. The frame is wide on the tacoma and it doesnt look like theres room for spring pads to be moved far enough outboard. Just something to think about before you start on the front. One more thing is a drivers side tcase would make it alot easier as the exhaust and driveshaft are a tight fit when there both on the passenger side.It will work but it would be easier to get a tacoma tcase and trans and use a 70's(not positive of the years) wagoneer drivers side diff front axle.

The exhaust is being made today, not much room to run it full length with the rear four link though, so it will be kinda short. It will dump out at the back of the cab. I think the most important thing is keeping the cat and the O2 sensors in the stock location. Front shaft will be close as well. Not much room for anything on the passenger side.

Drivers side tcase and front axle was a thought but really wanted to keep it all yota. It will fit, just have to be careful of your measurements of where you put chit.Plus I dont think anyone else has done this yet, always fun to do something different. Some extra thought had to be put into doing it this way but in the end it will be worth it.No regrets. The only thing that I wanted different maybe was using a cruiser axle, but their more money plus I dont know if anyone makes hi steer arms for them (plus no 30 spline longs for them). I took out the cat in my '97 Tacoma w/ the 3.4L, and replaced it with a straight pipe, w/ the sensor zip tied up. Runs like a champ, and with a couple other little things, finally chirps the 31" tires.

Cross member for the 4-link makes it hard to go much further than this point.
We were thinking the best way to finish it would to be make a turn down right at the can.
A little to late to modify the cross member to fit the exhaust, but it's not that big of a deal.

That's the issue we're dealing with right now. The 3 links are in, but the space for the panhard bar is almost nonexistant.

New electrical wiring and battery terminals. The wire is a fine braided 4ga. The positive battery terminal tells you your voltage at the battery. Other eletrical goodies include gold terminals at the starter and alternator. Tested, there is no voltage drop at all from the battery to the starter. The yellow top is actually going inside the cab. A red top Optima will be in the engine bay by the end.
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3485/img0619iu7.jpg

More progress on the engine overall. All the hoses have been replaced. New everything. Volant cold air intake system wasn't exactly the best fit, and needs some modification to seal up the large exposed opening on one side of the box.

I took out the cat in my '97 Tacoma w/ the 3.4L, and replaced it with a straight pipe, w/ the sensor zip tied up. Runs like a champ, and with a couple other little things, finally chirps the 31" tires.

Thanks Karnage.

Update !!
Been waiting for alot of parts to come in, so action is kind of slow right now.
Here's what's new:
To save money we decided to build our own tubing bender. This is what it looks like right now. Need some modifications (like everything) to get full use of the jack. The jack is a 8 ton with pnuematic control.

1 3/4" die, 240 deg capacity, heavy little bastard.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2499/img0961ui0.jpg

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5918/img0963ha5.jpg

There is now 100 sq ft of sound matting throughout the cab. The doors are covered on all interior sides and close very solid now even without the weatherstrip in yet.
http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/461/img0964rc5.jpg

Including 2 layers on the roof.
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/1953/img0966pw8.jpg

The cold air intake had a big hole in one side. So I cut a piece of white plexi to fit, found a plastic pipe fitting from the hardware store that matched the intake tube at the fender wall, then cut my hole in the plexi for the fitting. Rtv'd the whole mess together, and seems to be pretty tight now.

The start of the speaker box.
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/5998/img0625bj0.jpg

Mocked up in the cab for the first time to make sure it fits. This is one big box!
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/4581/img0628vi7.jpg

The 2nd battery will be secured behind the extinguishers.
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/8099/img0630mh9.jpg

The speaker box finally completed. Needs a few little things, but it's ready to be installed in the truck. It holds the Co2 tank, 2 extinguishers, 2500 watt power inverter, 500 watt amp, 2 - 10" subs, 2 - 5 1/4" mids, yellow top Optima, 2 storage areas, and a ton of carpet.

I called Poly Performance the other day and ordered coilovers from Pig(I'm afraid to ask why they call you that) and just wanted to say that I was more than impressed with his knowledge and friendly attitude.Pig was more than willing to spend plenty of time with me and discuss my options and made some good recomendations.
Poly Performance will be my fist choice in the future.(I'll be calling soon for more chit)With guys like Dave working there its no suprise that they are one of the larger and more reputable shops around. And their coil exchange policy is just one of the little things they do to stand out from some of the other shops

Thanks DrVic for da comps.I think I see your pimp upper link brackets in the last pics :smokin: I was going to ask you how you extended your main pressure fuel line to the tank when you put the cell in the bed. I've got a few different ideas but not sure how I want to do it yet. Seems like its taking forever but considering that we took it down to a frame and cab its not that bad.Theres sooo much little shit to do but getting closer all da time. Waiting on parts to show up is the reason its not closer to being finished:mad3: . Probably could have painted it while waiting for parts but I would rather wait until the end for that.

Ever get the panhard figured out???? And what are the lengths of your front links?

Any updates?
The front lower links are 39" and the top link is 33" long.We wanted to get the front coilovers mounted before the panhard was built so it could be as long as possible. The front shock mounts are a little different than a standard hoop. The shock mounts are taking longer than anticipated but will be worth the extra effort. When there done an update will be posted. The first design for the shockmounts did not pass the destructive testing we put them thru but the second design is much better. There been alot of little stuff that weve been putting together as well(running all the brake lines and doing alot of stuff for the interior and ripping out the main fuel line cause it was in the damn way!)

Finally got the front shock towers done. The first design has some structural flaws, so this is the second design and worked alot better.
The tube is all 1 3/4" DOM .188" wall.

Got the shock just mocked up right now. Still need paint before final assembly.
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2824/img1554lk4.jpg

Made a custom little panhard bar bracket out of 1 1/4" DOM to match the shock towers. You can kind of see it at the bottom of the pic.

Here's what we still have on the list:
- Gas tank to fabricate.
- 1 t-case and tranny to rebuild
- Install rear V-6 5.29 gears, axle shafts
- Wire front e-locker
- Order driveshafts
- Fabricate bumpers
- Buy rear shocks
- Mount the bed back on
- Cut and hinge access to tool box under the bed w/latch
- Paint
- Buy seats
- Wire up speaker/utility box and 2nd battery
- Mount and wire up winch
- Hi-lift mounts
- Put the interior back together. (It's all black now. It used to be tan)
- And a ton of other little things

Here's the latest. For the first time since we pulled out all the 2wd suspension, it now sits under it's power. All the jack stands have been pulled and she is a beautiful site. The shocks sit about an inch and a half too high right now, which really isn't a problem, and can be corrected.
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/7133/img1582qg3.jpg

The brakes are now completely done, thanks to Munsen (along with just about everything else) :D

The rear shock mounts took about 2 hours to complete. The fronts took 2 weeks.
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/1770/img1566bq0.jpg

The rear is just mocked up with square tube untill the shocks show up.

Alright. How about some updates! (it's about time! I know)

Lopped the back off the fenders. The bed's a little beat up but not bad. I've hammered any high spots down, but I'm leaving it at that. I'm not worried what the bed looks like. Took the toyota stickers off the tailgate and sanded it down. I'm pretty much ready for paint, I'm just waiting to get the tranny and t-cases back in, so I don't have to worry about scratching anything.
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/892/img1585yx5.jpg

Both transfer cases are ready to go now. Here's the freshly rebuilt one.
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/2048/img1591lm0.jpg

The tranny was about half way through before we noticed a crack in one of the gears. Crack goes all the way through the gear too. :( Called Marlin Crawler, and luckily they had what I needed, so it will be here wednesday.

Because of the crack, it seems to have expanded just enough to not let it slide freely.

The truck will be painted a silver color with the rocker panel area painted black with bedliner.

Nice work! You going to fab a internal or exo-cage on this beast?

It will have an internal cage that bolts together in two or three peices so it can be final welded out of the truck and also be taken out for whatever reasons.

My appologies for not keeping up with updates. Kind of ran out of project funds, so actual work had to take priority. This weekend was the first chance I've had to get back on track again. Lets hope I can see her through to end now. *crossing fingers*

Paint is the next step to completion, and the garage is now my spray booth. My neighbors are loving me right now too. :)
Decided on a PPG titanium silver, with a PPG clear.

Thanks! it's definitely been a bigger project than I first imagined. Been loving every minute of it though. And I can't wait to finally get this thing on the trail! I was hoping to have it ready last year, but with new ideas and more modifications, this truck has gotten just about everything replaced or modified.

Paint is FINALLY done for the cab and the fenders. Didn't have room for the bed, hood and tailgate at the same tim, so they're next. For just being a garage paintjob, I think it turned out pretty good. I'm not an auto painter by any means, so it could have been better. I'm not worried about how perfect it is anyways, as long as it's one solid color. In the garage it still looks grey, but taking a fender outside earlier today it looks really sweet.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/8537/img1661pg3.jpg

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2756/img1662nb6.jpg

I have everything ready for the interior except seats. Still need to find some nice ones.

The list still consists of:
Making the gas tank
order driveshafts
order rear shocks
hook up speedo cable
t-case brake
find fender flares
build bumpers
mount rock sliders
mount winch
put all the trim back on
bedliner
tons of little things

Now that it's painted alot of things can be put back on the truck, so progress should go good now.

Rock sliders are already made, they just need to be mounted on. Front and rear bumpers I'll bend up myself. Been looking at a couple different design ideas. The cage will be an interior cage. Don't really want to do an exo. The cage will probably be the last thing I do. I'm more focused on just getting her to roll under her own power at this point.

I just read the whole thread. Great work! I think you should re-examine your rear axle upper link mounts on the axle end. It seems each link tab only has about 1"-2" of weld contact and it doesn't seem strong enough. At the very least post another closeup picture so more experienced people can comment.

I also wanted to caution you on the mounting angle of your rear coilovers. Doesn't anyone else think he might be better off mounting them more upright? If they are too long, you might be better off going with shorter ones that are mounted more vertical.

Keep up the good work!
