: fuel cells
scout254 06-27-2006, 02:10 AM Crap, just lost my post....have to type it again:mad3: That sucked..
Anyhow, I am thinking about putting a fuel cell in the bed of my Scout80.
I dont run the full hard top anymore(any body want a full top?) Instead I like running the half cab and bikini top. So no worries about the "fuel smell" inside a closed vehicle. I have spotted a few tanks that look great, but would like to see more pics of fuel cells that are already mounted in your scouts.
The question is.... post up your "fuel cell" pics and let me know what brand and how many gallons the cell is, and if you removed the saddle tanks also. So far.... I think I will be leaving both saddle tanks in, and run a fuel cell in the back for a total of 3 fuel tanks (sucky gas mileage with the V8):flipoff2:
After doing some research, I really like the RCI 19 gallon choice,
it measures 30L x 12W x 12 L .... RCI # 2191AB ... a perfect fit behind the bulkhead.
So far the best price on this one from Summit is $279.95
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/stuff/rci-2191ab_w.jpg
So please post up your pics and let me see what has been installed....
A few links that I visited numerous times already.........:D

its a summit fuel cell, not sure how many gallons it holds.
binderbound 06-27-2006, 09:21 PM We used a 'fuel safe' in the comp rig.12 gallons.very well made and an all around great cell.down side,it was damn near $300.I run a cheaped out speedway cell in the green rig.16 gallon is perfect for the 4 cyl.cap gasket sucks ass and all the fittings weep gas between them and the tank,in the hot sun.but it was like $120 or something close to it.
I'm on the handset now.I'll post pics when I get home.maybe diesel smoke will post pics of the crawler mounting.
MochaMike 06-28-2006, 11:09 PM My saddle tanks were trashed, so I went big.....
33 Gallon Poly tank from Summit.
I had an HVAC guy bend up a cover for it out of sheetmetal..

scout254 07-13-2006, 03:03 AM Well, this is what I bought from Summit. Just got today from UPS, my 19 gallon aluminum RCI fuel cell:grinpimp:

Atleast I got the correct 4 way fuel selector from Napa. Left/Right/Fuel Cell/Off. 2 1/4" filler tube, vent hose, and cap
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/P7120004.jpg
I just dont know if I can even afford the gas to fill all 3 tanks now.:mad3:
But atleast I dont have to carry frikin jerry cans anymore.
:flipoff2:

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g254/mbscout80/DSC00341.jpg
I was going to finish the tank tonight, but the heat index was a 107!
Not pictured is the 1/4" skid plate welded to the underside of the frame. Now I will notch plate for the tanks sump and set four rubber pucks so the tank doesnt rub the plate and then strap it in. Its a 19 gallon that cost me $160 w/send unit. I will run a full top, but the rear of the bed will be wraped in sheet metal before its done. I bought a marine deck fill for my fuel door that is water proof and has a built in vent so I can remote fill my tank. Just my 2 cents.
scout254 07-17-2006, 12:34 AM Well got some more work done on the fuel cell...... cleaned and painted the bed with bedliner.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/P7150001.jpg
Mounted the cell to the floor, routed the outlet and vent lines.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/P7160017.jpg
Changed the fuel selector switch to that of one with 3 tanks. Plumbed new lines to the saddle tanks and changed the fuel filter while I was at it.:jester:

BLK Scout 800 07-22-2006, 10:34 PM Sweet looks good brian I just finished my 25gal yesterday. I got rid of the side tanks in favor of storage space.....but then again I don't STILL run a carb lol :flipoff2: j/k
I saw this the other day, and the saddle tanks make this possiable. I thought the dual exhaust look cool.
guidolyons 12-05-2006, 02:46 PM Dragging this one back up... I'm in the same boat, saddle tanks are leaking, stock replacements are $200 each, and unless I can get a radiator shop to fix them for cheap, I am thinking of a fuel cell. I'd like it to fit between the rear frame rails like mbscout80's, but under the floor not sticking through it.
mbscout80, got any finished pics of yours?
I saw an 17 gal RCI cell that was wide and flat rather than tall and skinny. 30"x17"x7" The space between the frame rails is 29" IIRC, so that might take a little frame tuck to fit.
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/rci-2172a_cp.jpg
or they also have a 20 gal 24"x20"x10" a 10" deep fuel cell will hang down few inched below the frame rails, but a good skid should fix that.
For the guys with poly fuel cells, how are they? Do they sag, or deform, etc?
Urban Wheeler 12-05-2006, 03:19 PM Looks like I'm a bit late to this party, but this is the best shot I have right now.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y257/Fryloc/scout%20build/IMG_0762.jpg
Here it is sunk down to the bottom of the frame. After dinking with where I am going to put my links, I think I will cut it out and fill the hole in the floor. I might move it to the rear just to add some weight back there.
My former "fuel cell", a 5 gallon can strapped down where the saddle tank was.

Where did you get the selector? Just plumbing one of my little side saddles to get things going but I will atleast want the second one if not a third tank as well. I was actually hunting for where you posted about your filler neck. I snagged one from the pnp, should work great but just wondering if you just ignored the vent line?
EDIT: found a two tank one

Damn.. pulling up an older thread :D
That looks like the correct selector... 3 outlets and 1 inlet..
Here's a pic of the current fuel cell vent....

The gas is gonna spill on your head. But look on the bright side, at least it'll kill the lice. Don't get too close to the water heater :homer:

Thanks... :flipoff2: there is a roll over valve in the tank... plus the oem side tanks would leak way more than the cell would....:homer:
Brandon 06-25-2009, 02:24 PM so for the other question, you running a vent on your side saddle tanks?
Urban Wheeler 06-25-2009, 04:12 PM Edited my other post to fix the pictures.
I think I'm going to end up cuting it out and moving it to the rear of the bed. Where it sits now looks like it will interfere with the links, plus moving it back will help even out the f/r weight.
scout254 06-25-2009, 06:09 PM so for the other question, you running a vent on your side saddle tanks?
damn gas caps vent enough as it is... no extra vent hoses on the saddle tanks...
I'm still carburated... :homer:

chris fresh 06-26-2009, 08:19 AM heres my set up in the black 78,19 gal from summit that i built a tray for to hang between the rails.elbow and filler hose from jazz, kept the factory fill location.going to do the same on the 800 build and use the same hose and a modified d-ring.

That's the same place that I have mine and it hangs way too low for my likes. At some point in the future, I plan to build my own cell that takes advantage of all the right spaces. You should remove the lower red bushings though and run straps around the whole tank. The Summit Cells have been known to crack when only held with the mounting feet.

Here is a six port fuel selector valve. Once I build my 6 point cage with a b-pillar I won't have any place to put the saddle tank manual valve and have been trying to figure out how to keep the saddle tanks with FI if I ever get rid of the quadrajunk. Found this neat little jem on e-gay

Your pinion angle in the rear looks a little high. Might need one of those fancy bevel gear setups to get that 90 degree angle. :D Looks good hopefully all of that shinnny paint looks good on the rocks.
chris fresh 06-26-2009, 03:39 PM difference is that this is strickly a street truck,i'm not using the red bushings,a friend put them in there.i ran this cell in this tray for the last 6 years with no cracks.it hangs down about 5 inches below the frame rails and as far as the paint,it won't see any rocks.that pinion angle is spot on,i'm goin chain drive, yoke to yoke.

.
That is a stanard GM truck fuel selector vavle... only for dual tanks.... :homer:
Won't work with 3 tanks....
but if you are FI then it would work good for dual tanks w a return feed :smokin:

So how do you like this cell?
I just laid out my "new" backseat and it pretty much isn't going to work with the poly cell I almost just bought. The need to make my rig more "family friendly" is requiring some different options. Plus it appears my poly cell is leaking :shaking:
1. Have you broken any mounting tabs yet?
2. Is it weeping from the seams?
3. have you seen where the pick-up runs to?
I am going to copy you and buy this one if you say you love it.

So far so good..
#1 No tabs broken yet
#2 No leaks
#3 Can't remember, i did have the filler off when I switched to the Jazz quick fill nozzle.... but cant remember where the pick up went....
Kinda wish I went to a larger capacity.. this was only a 19 gal :homer:
In the future I'm going to build a "protector" cage around it, planning on making a better tool storage system in the back.

Thanks...I will probably pull the trigger on this one and live with it.
I like that it is TALL and not wide or thick...should ensure that I always have fuel on steep stuff. It also has a return fitting where as my current (now weeping) poly cell does not. FI is on the menu still...
The reason I asked about the tabs breaking is that there are quite a few reports of broken tabs on the older Summit brand cells. I envision part of this to be due to installation errors etc.
As for larger capacity...what engine are you running again...345, 350? I can't imagine where I would ever run out of gas with 19 gallons. Even if I got 7mpg that would give me 130'ish mile range from camp...It will mean that I carry a couple of cans with me in the truck though. Not having to do that with the 33 gallon poly was "kind of" nice.
Thanks again.

why not just run a scout II or blazer tank? they should fit, and have 19 and 25 gallons respectively, and should only hang down a few inches.
Brandon 08-06-2009, 09:32 AM scout254 - I can't find the thread where you showed using the chevy filler plate or whatever, did you just use a radiator hose or something for the rubber filler part? I need to get something in there..
