904 auto tranny?

What kind/type of auto tranny fluid for a 904 auto?The tranny came from a 1986 jeep cherokee ( xj , i belive )with a 2.8 liter motor.

Thanks, Are you 100% sure?because i thought the 904 auto tranny was chrysler and dextron was for chevy/gm trannys.

I have an 86 with a 904. Faactory calls for ATF +III. You can use Dexron Mercon in an emergency. You don't need ATF +4, it's expensive as sin.

And that tranny is a 998 (lock-up version of a 904)

Yep, ATF +3, and ATF +4 will work but is more expensive. ATF +3 will soon be gone anyhow, since the +4 can be used in its place. Or you can run standard Dex 3 and add the additive to it. That's what I do, and it costs less by doing it this way.
