couldn't see much from the pic but i think that that set-up is common in mini sprints. i see them like that a lot, for some reason i even think that i've seen a 9" modified. corvettes also run a rearend similar to this.
just some thoughts, don't know if they're what you're wanting to hear.

90's Ford T-birds had an independent rear suspension that used a Ford 8.8" in a similar configuration. Ford also uses it in the late model Lincoln Mark VIII and an aluminum version in the newer mustangs. Jaguar had a similar IRS and already mentioned was the corvette.

A buddy and I were talking about using a alumminum 8.8 center or corvette and using hummer IS reduction hubs and custom long travel a arms..

huge ground clearance - enough wheeltravel - and alot of the reduction out at the hubs for strenght...

The guys at Rockstomper can make a 9" 3rd member for an IFS setup. Click here for details (http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/drivetrn/ifs9.htm)

You can make something just like that from the rear axle/carier bearings from certain 4 wheelers. I have seen several setups like this used on buggys before.

You need to find a 4 wheeler that has the carier bearing housing in one unit that is removable from the swing-arm. I am pretty sure that 250R rear ends are set up this way. Maybe 300EX's too. I don' have allot of exposure to 4 wheelers, so I am not really sure on what your best source would be.

What you do is bolt the carier bearing unit to your frame. Then you cut the axle to the length that you need it. Then if you have to spline the axle to whatever type of yolk/flange that you plan to use (the setups I have seen used whole axle shaft, hub, brake assemblies from front wheel drive cars) if you have machining capabilities then you can do this yourself, or you will have this done at a machine shop.

This is the way I have seen a few dune buggys set up. And if done correctly can withstand living behind high powered 600-1000cc Street bike engines.

Or if you do not want to make all this, search the net for mini/ motorcycle powered dune buggy manuf. I have seeen several companys that offer this type of setup as a kit. One company that comes to mind is Sans Rocket or something like that. If you buy from a place like this expect to pay major $$$.

Hope this helps.

The rear suspension you pictured is a swing axle, the VW bug ran one for a long time and I have seen them used on a number of buggies. The only problem with a swing axle is that it eats tires and robs hp. If you want to run the chain drive with the motorcycle engine you can build it yourself. Most of the parts are available at any ATV dealer. If you are building a small buggy like this, they are very similar to the cars run in the Minibaja competions. The race is sponsered by SAE and colleges all over the country build the little cars. The web site is www.sae.org/students/minibaja.htm (http://www.sae.org/students/minibaja.htm) and there is a link to most of the colleges home pages. They can give you tons of design and build info.

Here is a link to a guy who made a rear axle like I described above.
http://www.fidalgo.net/~anna/buggy.htm

Note how he used the spindles/hubs and all from a front wheel drive car. If you want tougher, maybe you could use the spindles/hubs , and axle shafts from the fron of an IFS Toyota, Nissan or whatever.

Here is the site I mentioned in my last post
Sand Bullet (http://sandbullet.com/)

Some of their stuff..

You can find anything dune buggy related here.

I had to do allot if searching for you, since I haven't been into these things in a while. Your Welcome:D :D

Thank You, Please come again!(In Abu voice)
