Take your pick of any truck tranny that mates to a Chevy motor. Except for maybe the first few years of the 700R4, Chevy didn't make many crappy transmissions.

NV4500 if you want manual.

I'm running a 700R4 though, and will NEVER go back to a manual.

The NV4500 came stock in V8 and diesel Chevy and Dodge trucks from 1993 until the present. It can be mated to lots of t-cases as it has a 23 spline output using the dodge tailshaft andd AA makes a tailshaft housing that works with a 231, Dana 300, Atlas, or STaK.

the nv4500 is the cats ass of stick transmissions, but you will pay for it. I would consider a sm465 also. Gm built them for almost 20 years and put them in every type of truck imaginable. given it is a 4 speed and 1st is 6.55 to 1 and there is no overdrive. it is still a rock solid stick. for a daily driver I would look elsewhere, but if you want a great granny gear and can handle 1 to 1 for top end, that is how I would go. plus you can find them for under $200

I'd check any local swap meet, or read the classified ads or buy-and-sell type newspapers. I bought an sm465 at the Puyallup, WA 4x4 Swap Meet for $15. (Of course it took a $400 Novak Adapter to mate it to my Spicer 18 T-case.)

As far as what vehicles were they in, this is from the Novak Adapters Sm465 page:

The SM465 is an outstanding, heavy-duty truck transmission designed and used in ½, 3/4 and 1+ ton trucks. The SM465 was made by General Motors from 1968 to 1991. They are found primarily in GM and Chevrolet trucks, Blazers, Suburbans and many other models falling under the 1/4-ton to 1-1/2-ton platforms.

Ok i already have a sm465 matter of fact got a couple of them. The course splined and the fine splined (not sure on spline count) Is there a stock t-case that woulb be a good choice? I think it has to have some sensors in order for the vortec motor to run right not sure

I put an Al-460E between my 4.3 vortec and Atlas II t/c. Its similar to 700r but uses electronics for shift points. Very stout and short little tranny. As far as sensors go you'll probably need at least a vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The adapters I brough to mate my Atlas to the tranny came with a port for the VSS.

Not if you don't mind swapping the output shaft and tailhousing...

Which brings out a good question, how hard is it to swap output shafts on a 700R from 2WD to 4wd? I recently bought one from a Guy off 3rdgen.org, and I'm dumbfounded on swaping it, I know I need a adapter kit w/ the shaft, I will be going with the Stak case.

Depending on your application, 2WD might be the cheap way to go. If you're putting it behind a chevy motor, get a 2WD version of the NV4500, put a dodge (23 spline) tailshaft in it, and run an AA 50-0205 tailshaft housing...you're ready to go with lots of different t-cases.

My trans is a 95 Chevy 2wd w/ 29 spline Dodge output. I bought it this way already connected to a D300, and can't figure out why the guy put this tranny output on since it requiried a conversion input on the D300. High spline count would be cool if it didn't limit t/case selection so much.

Me either. I have the TF999 and it's been doing a fine job.
