I'm thinking of clearancing the rockers a bit, so post up your fab skills. I'm thinking a combo of tube and plate.

I used 12gauge that I had a shop put breaks in that go under my rockers and back up to tie into my body mounts. Bent some tube for a step. I probably have maybe $40 in mine. Didn't know if the 12gauge would be strong enough, but I've had the weight of my jeep on them many times any they haven't dented yet. The brakes seem to make it much stronger.

1/8" steel diamond plate 12" up the sides with 2" x 3" x 1/4" angle iron at the corners for reinforcement. The hardest part was cutting the steel to fit - after that I just welded the parts together (front and back), drilled holes for mounting, and painted it all up. It should add plenty of protection while covering a lot of my ugly rust, damage, and bondo from the PO. I had 1" tubing bent and cut for steps/standoffs, but when I clamped them up there I didn't like how they looked, so I left them off.

Only bad part was I had to buy the corners to match (don't have anything to bend it with) as it looked funny without them.....

3/16 plate bent on a 90. runs wheel well to wheelwell under the flares and the bottom goes in to the frame, sandwiched in by the body mounts. 2" x .120 wall DOM welded to the side on an upward angle.

The only thing I've done to them since is put grip tape on the top of the rail and did some rattle can touchup every so often to the driver side.

Here are mine, they were made by the boys at www.nolimits4x4.com and work great. I have been running them for almost a year and except for paint scrapes they look great, no bending or moving. For the price I couldn't have justified the time/materials to make my own.

Are those the $239 rail I saw on their site? Not a bad price at all... The most expensive part for us was having a metal shop break the 2 pieces are the right angles, which I think was ~$50. Altogether, costs were ~$100 for the set.

2x6x1/4" box tube. Cut the rockers out, and fully welded in the box tube.
Sits even with the floor. It eliminated the pinchweld seam, and really stiffened the chassis up.

The rockers also double as auxilary air tanks for the OBA. They have flush mount drains, and the lines tie in through the interior rocker. They were pressure tested at 300 psi overnight without any leaks.

Heres my rocker guards, nutin special but it does the job. I got T-boned buy a honda civic doin 55 mph hit the pass side directly on the rocker guard and back tire and all it did was blow my tire off the bead and snap the leaf spring off and about 3 litle dents in the side and it totaled here car. They are welded straight to the frame and the cage ties into them up front. Didnt even bend them or the frame. just lost a bit of black paint:(

I see some of you have tied your rockers directly to the frame as well as directly to the body. Why bother running body mount bushings if you are just hard mounting other attachements points between frame & body- such as rockers. I see this alot with tube fenders, too. They are tied directly to the stinger or grill gaurd, which is welded to the frame, and then bolted to the tub.

I'm not knocking it, because I see some very nice rigs done like this. I just wonder if anyone has noticed any detremental effects, such as the tub cracking or noticeable increases in vibration from hard mounting points between the frame & body.

I mounted my body first, that is why there are body mount bushings. When I got to the rockers I saw no need to take the bushings out. I think it work fine either way in most cases.

Why yes! Rougher, noisier and the occasional tub crack. But if you make this many cuts you can deal.

Here's the unfinished version, sans body mounts (sorry if anyone is offended by French :fllipoff2:)
